After Cleaning the Pump, the Washer Now Will Not Drain: Decision Tree
Why this matters
A drain pump cleanout is the standard fix for a washer that will not drain, so it is jarring when the machine still will not drain, or stops draining entirely, right after you cleaned it. The reflex is to condemn the pump. But a cleanout disturbs the filter cap, the impeller, the connectors, and the hoses, and any of those reassembled wrong will block draining as completely as the original clog did. A pump that ran before may also have been killed by the very debris you removed if it was forced. Recognizing this as repair-induced points you back to the assembly you just touched instead of selling a pump the machine may not need.
Symptom presentation
After the pump filter or pump was cleaned: the washer fills and washes but the drain step does nothing, drains slowly, leaks at the pump, or throws a drain error. The pump may be audibly humming without moving water, silent, or running but not pumping. The original "won't drain" complaint persists or returns in a new form, and the customer last saw you at the pump.
Quick checks
- Confirm the filter cap and pump cover are fully seated and latched. A cap not torqued home leaks or lets the pump lose prime; a cover cross-threaded blocks the impeller.
- Re-seat the pump electrical connector. Pulling the pump commonly unseats its terminal.
- Check the impeller by hand (power off). Debris caught during reassembly, or an impeller reinstalled with a trapped object, will jam it.
- Inspect the drain hose. A hose kinked, pinched behind the machine, or pushed too far down the standpipe during reassembly stops or siphons the drain.
Isolation tree
Branch 1: Pump hums, no water moves. The impeller is jammed or the pump lost prime. Open the filter and clear any debris around the impeller; spin it by hand to confirm free rotation. A coin, button, or the cleaning rag fragment lodged after reassembly is common. If the impeller spins free and the pump still only hums, the pump motor may have been damaged or its capacitor/winding is failing; meter the pump.
Branch 2: Pump silent during drain. No power or no command. Re-seat the pump connector and meter for voltage at the pump during the drain step. Voltage present, pump silent: open winding or seized motor (test resistance). No voltage: a disturbed harness, a lid-lock/door-lock not made (drain often gates on lock), or the control. Confirm the lock is engaged.
Branch 3: Drains slowly or partially. Partial restriction reintroduced. The filter cap, a hose clamp, or the pump cover was reassembled with a partial obstruction, or the drain hose is kinked. Trace the full drain path: filter, pump, internal hose, external drain hose, standpipe. A hose pushed too deep into the standpipe siphons and slows draining.
Branch 4: Leaks at the pump. A seal, O-ring, or filter cap not seated, or a hose clamp not reinstalled. Find the leak point and reseat/replace the seal. A cracked pump housing from over-tightening the cap is possible; inspect.
Branch 5: Drain error code, pump and path verified. The pressure/level sensor or control thinks water remains, or the air dome/pressure tube was disturbed. Check the pressure-switch hose for a kink or a knock-off during the repair; a control that never sees "empty" will not advance.
Branch 6: Lid/door lock not made after reassembly. Front and many top-loaders gate the drain and spin steps on a confirmed lock. If the boot, latch striker, or lock connector shifted during the pump access, the machine fills and washes but silently skips drain because it never sees the lock engaged. Confirm the lock clicks and the control reads it locked; many models flash or log a lock fault rather than a drain fault, which sends technicians to the wrong subsystem.
Confirming diagnosis
- Impeller confirmation: clearing a jam or trapped object and confirming free spin restores draining. Proof the cleanout left or introduced an obstruction.
- Connector confirmation: re-seating the pump connector restores power and draining; the harness was simply unseated.
- Hose-path confirmation: removing a kink, repositioning the drain hose to proper standpipe depth, or clearing a reassembled restriction restores full drain flow.
- Pump-failure confirmation: impeller free, connector good, voltage present during drain, yet pump silent or only humming with an out-of-spec winding reading; the pump itself failed and needs replacement.
Remediation
- Reseat and latch the filter cap and pump cover to spec; replace a cracked housing or worn cap seal.
- Re-seat the pump electrical connector and any disturbed harness.
- Clear the impeller of all debris and confirm free rotation.
- Correct the drain hose: remove kinks, set proper standpipe depth, and reinstall all clamps.
- Reconnect and unkink the pressure-switch/air-dome tube if disturbed.
- Replace the pump only after confirming the impeller, connector, hoses, and lock are all good and the pump still will not run.
- Run a drain/spin cycle and confirm complete draining with no leak before leaving.
Unplug the washer and verify the drum is empty of water before opening the pump; the pump and lid lock carry line voltage and standing water can spill onto live terminals. On front-loaders, confirm the door lock releases before service. Never bypass a lid or door lock to force a drain; the interlock is a safety device.
