Bottom Freezer Frost on Food Not Walls Decision Tree
Why this matters
Frost forming on packaged food inside a bottom-freezer drawer while the walls of the cavity stay clear is the diagnostic mirror image of the rear-evap ice problem and trips up techs in the opposite direction. Walls being clear says the defrost cycle is working. Food frosting up says humid air is entering the box, condensing on cold surfaces, and freezing. The fix is almost never a defrost component and almost always a gasket, an air-curtain failure, a drawer alignment issue, or a customer behavior pattern. Misreading this symptom and selling a defrost heater is a callback in 60 to 90 days when the customer reports the food frost is back. Symptom presentation
Customer reports the freezer is cold and seems to work, but everything in it develops a frost coating within a week. Ice cream surfaces show frost crystals, packaged meat shows freezer-burn-style frost on the outside of the bag, and frozen vegetables clump together inside the bag. Critically: the walls of the freezer cavity and the rear panel are clean or only lightly frosted, the evaporator behind the rear panel is clean and running normally during defrost, and the defrost cycle clears any small wall frost it does form within the rated time.
Confirm by temperature reading: place a thermocouple inside the drawer at the rear, middle, and front. A 6 to 10 F swing front-to-back inside the same drawer means warm air is washing into the cavity each time the drawer opens (or stays cracked) and is the smoking gun for an air-management call. A flat temperature distribution rules out the air-management branch and routes you to the alternative branches below.
Quick checks at the door
Test the drawer gasket. Bottom-freezer drawers seal on three or four sides depending on platform: top, two sides, and (on some Maytag / KitchenAid models) bottom. Run a dollar-bill drag test along the full perimeter of the drawer. Any side that releases the bill without drag is the leak.
Check drawer alignment. The drawer rails on French door and bottom-mount platforms can sag over years of loading. A drawer that is misaligned by even 1/4 inch on one side will leave a triangular gap at one corner of the gasket that the customer cannot see from above. Pull the drawer fully out, inspect both rails for play, and confirm the drawer drops back into the rail capture cleanly.
Confirm the freezer setpoint. Setpoints below -5 F drive condensation onto food faster because the dew point of any infiltrated air is hit harder. Many customers crank the dial down when they report frost because they think the unit is "not cold enough"; this makes the symptom worse, not better.
Inspect for ice in the drawer track or rail. Ice formed in the drawer track from prior cycles can hold the drawer cracked open 1/8 inch and produce a continuous warm-air leak. Clear and inspect.
Isolation tree
Branch A: dollar-bill test fails at one or more sides of the gasket. Replace the drawer gasket. On platforms where the gasket is integrated with the drawer-front trim, replace the trim assembly. Confirm the new gasket pulls magnetically along the full perimeter after install.
Branch B: gasket passes, but drawer drops with visible play in one rail. Replace the rail kit (typically sold as a pair on Whirlpool / KitchenAid / Maytag platforms). Confirm drawer closure depth with a level placed across the drawer top after install.
Branch C: gasket and rails pass, but temperature delta inside the drawer is still 6 to 10 F front-to-back. Check the icemaker fill tube and inlet on platforms with an in-freezer icemaker. A fill tube that does not seat fully into the icemaker funnel allows warm room air to track in through the through-the-wall fill port. Reseat the fill tube, replace the fill-tube grommet if it is loose, and confirm the through-the-wall path is sealed.
Branch D: all of the above pass, temperature is flat, but food is still frosting. Customer behavior is now the most likely driver. Two patterns: (1) the customer is over-packing the drawer to the point that the air-circulation paths around the evap fan are blocked, creating a low-grade humidity pocket that cycles through the defrost system; (2) the customer is loading warm or room-temperature food directly into the freezer without pre-chilling, which spikes the in-drawer humidity and produces frost on neighboring items. Educate the customer, recommend pre-chill in the fresh-food compartment for 4 hours before transfer, recommend not blocking the rear vents. Document the conversation in the work order.
Branch E: the unit has an external water and ice dispenser through the freezer door (rare on bottom-freezer; common on French-door-with-bottom-freezer). The through-the-door ice chute can leak warm air past a failed flapper or worn dispenser seal. Inspect the chute seal and replace if it shows compression set.
Confirming the diagnosis
For Branch A (gasket) and B (rails), pull a 7-day follow-up call with the customer and ask whether new food added since the repair has shown frost. New food added after the gasket replacement should be clean.
For Branch C (icemaker fill tube), pull a thermocouple-in-bag reading on a fresh test load placed at the front of the drawer 48 hours after the repair. Reading below 0 F across the bag with no surface frost confirms the warm-air path is closed.
For Branch D (customer behavior), document the educational conversation, photograph any over-packed state, and set the expectation that any callback within 30 days will require the customer to demonstrate the recommended loading pattern. This is not adversarial; it is the only honest path on a unit that is mechanically fine.
For Branch E (dispenser chute), drop a paper indicator into the chute and confirm it does not pull through under freezer-fan vacuum, indicating the flapper is now sealing.

Branch A: drawer gasket, drawer trim assembly (platform-dependent), gasket-mounting screws or clips.
Branch B: drawer rail kit (pair), rail-mounting hardware.
Branch C: icemaker fill tube, fill-tube grommet, in-cavity icemaker harness if the through-the-wall opening has worn.
Branch D: no parts; education and documentation only.
Branch E: dispenser flapper, dispenser chute seal kit, dispenser actuator.
When to escalate
If Branches A through E all clear and the symptom persists, look upstream at fresh-food humidity. A fresh-food compartment running above 50 percent relative humidity from a leaking damper or a stuck mullion heater pushes humid air into the freezer on every cycle. Switch decision trees and walk the fresh-food side per the rear-evap and damper trees.
