Customer Says "Dishwasher Doesn't Clean": Translation Decision Tree

Why this matters

"Doesn't clean" covers everything from a trivial clogged spray arm to a failed wash pump, and the customer's word for it never tells you which. The complaint also overlaps heavily with two non-failures, hard-water film and bad loading, that no part will fix. Add water temperature, water level, detergent, and the diverter that switches spray between upper and lower arms, and you have a half-dozen distinct faults all reported the same way. Translating "doesn't clean" into a specific cause, with the dishwasher run and observed mid-cycle, is what keeps you from replacing a pump on a machine whose only problem was a clogged filter and a cold water supply.

Symptom presentation

The customer reports dirty or gritty dishes, food residue, white film/spots, or dishes that come out as dirty as they went in. Underneath: no/weak wash action (pump, spray arms, clog, low water), inadequate heat (cold fill, no heating element/heat function), water-chemistry film (hard water, no rinse aid), or coverage gaps (loading, diverter, one arm not turning).

Quick checks

  • Open the door mid-wash and watch: are the spray arms spinning freely and throwing water with force? Weak or stalled arms point to pump, clog, or low water.
  • Pull and inspect the filter/sump screen; a food-packed filter is the most common "doesn't clean" cause and is often years uncleaned.
  • Spin each spray arm by hand and check the nozzles for debris (toothpicks, seeds, mineral scale) blocking the jets.
  • Check incoming water temperature: run the kitchen hot tap first; a dishwasher filling with cold/lukewarm water will not dissolve detergent or cut grease. Target a hot fill near 120 F.
  • Distinguish film from food: white chalky film on glassware is hard-water/rinse-aid, not a mechanical fault; sticky food residue is a wash-action or heat problem.

Isolation tree

  1. Are the SPRAY ARMS spinning and throwing water hard during wash? If no or weak: check water level (a low fill from a clogged inlet valve, kinked fill line, or float fault starves the pump), then the wash pump/impeller, then a clog in the filter/sump or chopper. Strong, free-spinning arms with good water rule the pump and supply good.
  2. Is the FILTER/SUMP clogged? Clean it and re-run. A packed filter recirculates dirty water and redeposits food; this alone resolves a large share of calls. Check the chopper/grinder area for a stuck object jamming circulation.
  3. Are the spray-arm NOZZLES blocked or one arm not turning? Clear debris and scale from the jets; confirm both upper and lower arms rotate. A diverter that fails to alternate flow between arms leaves the top or bottom rack uncleaned, test the diverter motor/valve.
  4. Is the WATER HOT enough? Verify a hot fill; cold water leaves detergent undissolved and grease uncut. If the fill is cold, the supply hot tap is far from the machine (advise running it first) or the heating element/heat-dry function has failed. Test the heating element and the high-limit/thermostat; a dead element gives lukewarm wash water and cold, wet dishes.
  5. Is the complaint FILM/SPOTS rather than food? This is water chemistry, not a part. Confirm rinse aid is present and dispensing, check water hardness, and verify the correct detergent and dose. Hard-water film and missing rinse aid produce exactly the "won't get clean" report with a perfectly functional machine.
  6. Good water, hot, arms spinning, filter clean, but still dirty? Reassess loading: overcrowding, dishes nested or shadowing each other, large items blocking arm rotation, or pre-rinsed dishes confusing soil-sensing cycles. Loading and detergent fix more "doesn't clean" calls than parts do.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm by running the machine and observing. Wash-action fault: arms weak or stalled, low water, or a clog you cleared restores spray. Pump fault: arms weak with adequate water and clean filter, impeller/pump confirmed. Heat fault: lukewarm wash water, element tests open. Coverage fault: one rack consistently dirty with a non-rotating arm or failed diverter. Water-chemistry: film/spots on otherwise food-free dishes, resolved by rinse aid and detergent correction. Loading: clean machine, residue tied to crowding/shadowing, resolved by reloading guidance.

Remediation

  • Low water/supply: clear the inlet screen, replace a faulty inlet valve or float switch, straighten the fill line.
  • Pump/clog: clean the filter/sump and chopper; replace a worn wash-pump impeller or motor if water action stays weak after clearing.
  • Spray arms/diverter: clear nozzles, replace a cracked arm, repair/replace the diverter so both arms get flow.
  • Heat: replace a failed heating element or thermostat; advise running the hot tap before starting and verify a near-120 F fill.
  • Water chemistry: load rinse aid, confirm dispensing, recommend correct detergent and dose for the local water hardness.
  • Loading: coach on spacing, facing soiled surfaces toward arms, and not blocking arm rotation.

The dishwasher heating element, wash-pump motor, and door switch are line-voltage and the machine holds water; unplug or disconnect the circuit and verify zero voltage before reaching into the sump or servicing electrical parts. Confirm the water supply is shut and the unit drained before pump or valve work to avoid flooding and shock.
