Customer Says "Washer Won't Drain": Translation Decision Tree
Why this matters
"Won't drain" is a call you almost always close on the first visit if you read it correctly, but it hides at least five distinct faults: a clogged pump or drain path, a failed drain pump, a lid-switch or door-lock that blocks the drain/spin step, a control fault, or a kinked/clogged drain hose and house standpipe that are not the washer at all. The customer sees standing water and assumes the worst. The reason it matters to translate carefully is that two of these (a sock in the pump, a clogged standpipe) are cheap and fast, while two others (pump motor, control board) are not, and the customer's description gives you no way to tell them apart without a structured check.
Symptom presentation
The customer reports standing water in the tub, a cycle that stops with water in it, clothes left sopping, or water that drains slowly or backs up. Underneath: a blocked pump/drain path (foreign object, lint), a dead drain pump, a lid/door interlock preventing drain-spin, a control/timer fault, or a drain-hose/standpipe problem external to the machine.
Quick checks
- Listen during the drain step: does the pump hum/run, or is it silent? A humming pump that does not move water points to a clog or seized impeller; a silent pump points to power, control, or a dead motor.
- Check the lid switch (top-load) or door lock (front-load): if the washer will not enter spin/drain, a failed interlock is a common cause; the machine sees the lid/door as open.
- Inspect the drain hose for kinks and confirm it is not pushed too far down the standpipe (which causes siphoning) or blocked; pour-test the house standpipe to rule out a household drain backup.
- Access the pump filter/coin trap (front-loaders have one) and check for socks, coins, lint, or debris jamming the impeller.
- Confirm the cycle actually called for drain; a paused or mis-set cycle (soak, extra rinse) can look like a drain failure.
Isolation tree
- Does the DRAIN PUMP run (hum) but no water moves? The pump is powered but obstructed or seized. Check the pump filter/coin trap and the pump inlet for a foreign object (sock, coin, underwire) jamming the impeller; clear it. If the impeller spins freely and is clear but still moves no water, the impeller is stripped or the pump is internally failed, replace the pump.
- Is the pump SILENT during the drain step? No power or no command. First confirm the lid switch (top-load) or door lock (front-load) is closing the circuit, the control will not run drain/spin if it thinks the lid/door is open. Test the interlock; replace if open. If the interlock is good and the pump still gets no power, check the control board/timer output to the pump and the wiring; a failed control or harness leaves a good pump dead.
- Is the DRAIN HOSE or STANDPIPE the problem? Disconnect the drain hose and direct it to a bucket/floor drain, then run a drain. If it drains fine, the fault is external: a kinked hose, a hose inserted too deep (siphon), or a clogged house standpipe. Clear the standpipe or correct the hose; this is not a washer repair.
- Does the washer fill but never advance to drain? A control/timer fault or a pressure-switch/water-level sensor stuck "full" can hold the cycle. Test the pressure switch/air dome tube (a clogged air tube makes the machine think it is still full and never drain) and the control.
- Front-loader draining slowly with an odor? A partially clogged coin trap/pump filter restricts flow; clean it fully. Repeated slow-drain with biofilm points to maintenance, not a part failure.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirm by the run-and-observe at the drain step. Clog: pump hums, debris found in the filter/impeller, drain restored after clearing. Pump failure: pump runs (or impeller free) but no water moves, or pump silent with power present, replaced and verified. Interlock fault: lid switch/door lock tests open, drain restored after replacement. External: hose-to-bucket test drains fine, standpipe or hose was the issue. Control/pressure-switch fault: good pump and interlock but no drain command, or the machine never registers empty, confirmed by testing the pressure switch and control output.
Remediation
- Clog: clear the pump filter/coin trap, impeller, and inlet of foreign objects and lint; explain how to check the trap periodically (front-loaders).
- Drain pump: replace the pump when the impeller is stripped, seized, or the motor is dead.
- Lid switch / door lock: replace the failed interlock so the control enters drain/spin.
- Drain hose / standpipe: straighten or reposition the hose to the correct standpipe depth, clear a clogged house standpipe (a plumbing item, advise the customer accordingly).
- Pressure switch / air tube: clear the clogged air dome tube or replace the pressure switch so the machine registers level and commands drain.
- Control board: replace the control/timer when a good pump and interlock get no drain command.
A washer that "won't drain" holds standing water; the drain pump, lid switch, and control are line-voltage and water is present. Unplug the washer and verify zero voltage before reaching into the pump or coin trap, and have towels and a pan ready, the trap and pump will release the trapped water. Do not bypass a lid switch or door lock to force operation; the interlock is a safety device.
