Dishwasher Leaves Grit Only After Detergent Change Decision Tree

Why this matters

A dishwasher that cleaned acceptably for years and started leaving grit on dishes only after the customer switched detergent is one of the highest-callback symptoms in residential appliance work, because the easy answer ("it is the detergent, change it back") frequently does not actually fix the problem. Detergent change exposes a pre-existing condition: a partially clogged filter, a marginal wash-arm flow, a hard-water rinse-aid problem, or a low water temperature that the prior detergent was masking. The tree below separates the detergent-only fix (rare) from the latent-condition fix (common) so the tech does not lose a callback four weeks later.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports gritty residue on the lower rack, sometimes on glassware, that started within one or two cycles of switching detergent brand or form (pods to powder, powder to gel, branded to private-label). The customer is convinced the new detergent is bad. Validate this with three quick questions:

  • What detergent were they using before, and what are they using now? Pods to powder is a common trigger because pod-rinse-aid pairings differ from manually-dosed rinse aid.
  • Has the water heater setpoint been changed recently? Dishwashers want 120 to 125 F at the inlet; below 110 F the new detergent may not fully dissolve.
  • Has the dishwasher filter been removed and cleaned recently? Customers rarely do this and a year of buildup will release fines into the wash when a more aggressive detergent breaks up the residue.

Run an empty cycle with a clean cup on the lower rack and observe the grit. Two patterns:

  • Fine sandy grit with no color: hard-water mineral deposit released from the sump and filter as the new detergent strips them.
  • Powdery white residue: undissolved detergent or rinse-aid imbalance.

Quick checks at the door

Pull and inspect the wash-arm filter assemblies (typically a coarse filter and a fine filter on Bosch / KitchenAid / Whirlpool / Samsung platforms). Buildup of food fines, mineral scale, and old detergent in the fine filter is the most common confounder. Clean both filters thoroughly. Some platforms have a chopper blade in the sump under the filter; inspect for buildup.

Measure inlet water temperature. Trigger a fill cycle, catch the inlet water in a thermometer-equipped cup. Below 110 F at the inlet is the failure threshold for many new-generation detergents. Customer education: run the kitchen sink hot for 30 seconds before starting the dishwasher.

Inspect the lower wash arm for clogged jets. A pattern of grit-on-bottom-rack-only often correlates with two or three blocked jets on the lower arm that have lost their ability to scour. Clean or replace.

Inspect rinse-aid dispenser fill level. An empty rinse aid in a new-detergent install will leave residue regardless of detergent quality.

Isolation tree

Branch A: filter cleaning solves it. Document the cleaning interval the customer should follow (most platforms recommend every 30 days; consult the model tag). Educate the customer that the new detergent is not the cause; the prior detergent was just less aggressive about releasing the buildup.

Branch B: inlet water temperature is below 110 F. Customer-side fix: pre-flush the hot line. If the water heater is set below 120 F for safety (children, scald-risk), explain the trade-off and recommend either a temperature increase to 120 F with a thermostatic mixing valve at the sink and shower per ASSE 1017, or accepting the longer wash cycle on a Sani-rinse setting if the platform offers it.

Branch C: lower wash arm jets clogged. Clean the arm. If the arm spins but is restricted, replace.

Branch D: rinse-aid dispenser empty or set to too low a dose. Fill rinse aid, set the dispenser to the recommended dose for the local hardness (most dispensers have a 1 through 6 dial; 4 or 5 is typical for hard water).

Branch E: water hardness above 10 grains per gallon (gpg). At this hardness the dishwasher's built-in regeneration salt softener (on European-influenced platforms like Bosch and Miele) needs salt refill; without it, scale builds up faster than the new detergent can manage. Refill the regeneration salt. On platforms without a built-in softener, hard water above 15 gpg is an upstream water-treatment conversation, not a dishwasher repair conversation.

Branch F: new detergent has a different active ingredient profile (enzyme-heavy vs. bleach-heavy vs. surfactant-heavy) and is genuinely incompatible with the customer's water and load pattern. Recommend they try a different detergent and run a test cycle. Document this as a last resort, not a first guess.

Confirming the diagnosis

Run an empty cycle after each branch's fix with a clean cup on the lower rack and a clean cup on the top rack. Both cups clean and spot-free for two consecutive cycles confirms the repair.

For Branch A, ask the customer to repeat the cleaning at the documented interval and call back at 60 days if grit returns. A genuine filter-buildup fix should not return.

For Branch B, confirm inlet temp at 120 F or above before next test cycle.

For Branch C, confirm visible water column from all jets after cleaning.

For Branch D, confirm rinse-aid dispenser is dispensing on each cycle (most platforms have a low-rinse-aid indicator).

For Branch E, confirm salt reservoir is filled and the platform's salt indicator clears.

Remediation parts and consumables by branch

Branch A: no parts; cleaning labor only.

Branch B: no parts; customer education on pre-flush; thermostatic mixing valve on the sink and shower if hot-water setpoint must rise (separate plumbing trip).

Branch C: lower wash arm assembly, arm-mounting bearing.

Branch D: rinse-aid consumable.

Branch E: regeneration salt (Bosch / Miele platforms); water-softener consultation if upstream issue.

Branch F: no parts; detergent change.

When to escalate

If Branches A through F do not resolve the grit, take a fresh water sample and have it tested for hardness, iron, and total dissolved solids. A unit installed in a region with high TDS may produce grit no detergent can manage; the conversation moves to whole-house water treatment, which is out of scope for an appliance repair call but in scope for an honest customer recommendation.
