Dishwasher No Clean Only Top Rack Decision Tree
Why this matters
A dishwasher that cleans the bottom rack acceptably but leaves the top rack visibly dirty is a focused symptom that points at the upper spray-arm feed path, not at general wash performance. Techs who treat this call as "weak wash" and replace the wash pump or the inlet valve walk into a callback because the bottom rack already proved the pump and the fill cycle. The decision tree below isolates upper-feed failures by tracking the water path from the sump to the upper arm and back, and confirms the repair with a single visible diagnostic that any customer can replicate.
Symptom presentation
Customer reports the top rack is coming out with food residue, water spots, or detergent residue while the bottom rack is acceptable. Sometimes the customer reports the upper arm "does not spin"; sometimes they only notice that glasses and small bowls are dirty without connecting it to a specific arm. Confirm by running a cleaning cycle with the dishwasher empty except for a single clean cup placed inverted on the top rack. If the cup is dirty after the cycle, this is a true upper-feed call. If the cup is clean, the customer issue is loading pattern or detergent, not a service call.
Confirm water is reaching the upper arm at all. Open the door at the wash phase (5 to 10 minutes into a normal cycle on a modern dishwasher; some platforms pause when the door opens). Pull the top rack out a few inches and observe the underside. Water dripping or running from the upper feed riser confirms water is reaching the upper area; no water there is the smoking gun.
Quick checks at the door
Inspect the upper spray arm. Holes clogged with detergent buildup, food fines, or hard-water mineral deposits restrict flow and prevent the arm from spinning. Pull the arm, hold it against the light, and confirm all jet holes are open. Clean with a fine wire or replace if more than 4 holes are blocked or if the bearing is gummed.
Test arm rotation. Spin the arm by hand. A free spin with light resistance is correct. A binding spin or no spin points at a failed bearing in the arm or a worn arm-mounting boss. Replace the arm.
Inspect the upper feed tube. On most modern dishwashers (Bosch, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE) the feed tube clips onto the back wall and a flexible coupling joins it to the upper arm. A disconnected coupling or a cracked feed tube dumps water into the cavity instead of routing it to the arm. Reseat or replace.
Check the diverter. Many platforms use a single wash pump and a diverter valve to alternate water between the upper and lower wash arms. A diverter stuck in the lower-arm-only position will starve the upper arm. The diverter is in the sump on most platforms; access requires removing the lower filter assembly.
Isolation tree
Branch A: upper spray arm holes clogged or bearing binding. Clean or replace the arm. Run an empty-cup test to confirm.
Branch B: upper feed tube disconnected, cracked, or kinked. Reseat the tube, replace if cracked, ensure clips are engaged. On Bosch / Thermador platforms the upper-arm feed is integrated with a wash module that requires a service procedure to access; consult the model tech sheet.
Branch C: diverter valve stuck. Enter diagnostic mode (Whirlpool: hold the cancel button per the model tag; Bosch: enter the test program per the model service sheet; KitchenAid: door-button sequence on the model tag) and watch the diverter cycle. A diverter that does not cycle through both positions is failed; replace the diverter motor or the entire wash module per platform.
Branch D: middle-rack spray. Some platforms have a third arm that feeds the middle rack on three-rack designs. Treat the middle-rack feed as a separate branch with the same logic as Branch A and B.
Branch E: tall items in the bottom rack blocking the feed-tube path. Customer loading pattern is a real cause on platforms with a rear-routed feed tube. Educate the customer on loading and run the empty-cup test after they adjust.
Branch F: wash motor delivering low flow because of a partially clogged sump screen or a failed pump impeller. Distinguish from Branch A through E by measuring spin rate of the lower arm; if the lower arm is also visibly slow, the wash pump or sump is the call, not the upper-feed path.
Confirming the diagnosis
The empty-cup test is the universal confirmation. Run a normal cycle with the dishwasher empty except for a single clean cup inverted on the top rack and a second clean cup inverted on the bottom rack. After the cycle, both cups should be clean and water-spot-free. A failed test on the top cup means the upper-feed path is still not delivering correctly.
For platforms with a documented diverter cycle in diagnostic mode, confirm the diverter visits both positions during the test cycle.
For Branch B (feed tube), confirm a visible water column reaches the upper arm by opening the door during wash and observing the underside of the upper rack.
Remediation parts list by branch
Branch A: upper spray arm assembly, arm-mounting bearing, arm-mounting boss.
Branch B: upper feed tube, feed-tube clips, feed-tube coupling, wash module (Bosch / Thermador integrated).
Branch C: diverter motor, diverter seal, wash module (platform-dependent), main control board (rare; only after diverter motor confirmed good).
Branch D: middle-rack spray arm and feed.
Branch E: no parts; customer loading education.
Branch F: switch decision trees; this is a wash-pump call, not an upper-feed call.
When to escalate or switch trees
If the empty-cup test passes after repair but the customer reports the symptom returns within 30 days, look at hard-water mineral buildup as the upstream cause. A water-hardness test above 10 grains per gallon (gpg) drives mineral occlusion of the upper arm faster than the unit can tolerate; recommend a softener consultation, and document the water condition in the work order so the next callback routes correctly.
If the diverter has been replaced twice in 18 months on the same unit, escalate to a wash module replacement on the platforms where the diverter is integrated; replacing the standalone diverter motor in isolation is a losing repair on those units.
