Why this matters
A dishwasher that leaves white spots and film on glassware draws a parts-and-cycle service call, but the most common root cause is the water, not the machine. Hard water (high dissolved calcium and magnesium) deposits mineral scale that dries as spots and cloud. When a home has no water softener, or the softener has failed or run out of salt, every cycle redeposits minerals regardless of how well the dishwasher works. Replacing pumps, heaters, or control boards changes nothing because the deposit is in the water itself. Recognizing the cross-system water-quality fault redirects the fix to softening and rinse aid and avoids a useless appliance repair.
The cost of getting this wrong is real: a tech who swaps a circulation pump or a heating element on a spotting complaint bills parts and labor, the customer runs one load, and the spots are right back. The deposit chemistry does not care which pump pushed the water. The only defensible path is to measure the water first.
Symptom presentation
Cloudy glasses, white powdery spots, and a chalky film on the tub interior and heating element. The pattern is uniform across all loads, not random, and it worsens over time as scale accumulates. The customer often reports it "started after we moved" or "the old house never did this," which points to a water-supply change, not a machine change. The dishwasher otherwise cleans food off, sprays, drains, and heats normally.
Quick checks
- Test the incoming water hardness with a test strip or kit. Hardness above roughly 7 grains per gallon (about 120 mg/L as calcium carbonate) is hard; above 10 gpg is very hard and spots aggressively.
- Determine whether the home has a softener, and if so whether it is operating: check the salt level in the brine tank and confirm it regenerates.
- Confirm rinse aid is present and the dispenser is set to dispense. Rinse aid sheets water off glass and is the first defense against spotting.
- Confirm the detergent is appropriate and not expired or caked; old powder underperforms in hard water.
- Confirm incoming water is hot enough. Detergent and rinse aid work best when the wash reaches roughly 120 to 140 F; cold or lukewarm fill leaves detergent and minerals on the load. Many dishwashers boost internally, but a cold supply on a short cycle never gets there.
- Distinguish spots (wipe off, mineral) from etching (permanent glass damage, will not wipe off). The vinegar test is decisive: a mineral spot dissolves under a drop of white vinegar; an etched cloud does not change.
- Check the tub interior and the heating element for scale buildup. Heavy white crust on the element is a direct indicator of long-running hard water.

Branch A: Water tests hard, no softener or softener out of salt.
- Cross-system water-quality fault. The spots are mineral deposit, not a machine defect. Resolve at the water supply.
Branch B: Water tests soft, spots persist.
- Not a hardness problem. Return to the machine and chemistry: rinse-aid dispenser empty or stuck, low fill temperature, weak detergent, or a spray-arm/circulation issue redepositing soil.
Branch C: Water hard, softener present and salted.
- Softener may be undersized, bypassed, or failed. Test softened water at a tap downstream of the softener; if it still tests hard (above ~7 gpg after treatment), the softener is not working - a stuck bypass valve, a failed control head, or a resin bed past its life. That is a water-treatment service issue, not the dishwasher.
- Also confirm the dishwasher is actually fed from the softened line. A common miss: the kitchen cold (and the dishwasher with it) is plumbed ahead of the softener, so soft water reaches the bathrooms but hard water reaches the dishwasher.
Branch D: Film that does not wipe off (etching).
- Permanent etching from soft water plus too much detergent plus high heat. This is over-treatment, not hard water. The glass surface is chemically eroded; it cannot be reversed. Reduce the detergent dose, drop to a lower-temperature cycle, and confirm the water is not extremely soft (near zero hardness aggravates etching). Educate the homeowner that etched glass stays etched.
Confirming diagnosis
The hardness test is the deciding evidence. Hard incoming water (above ~7 gpg, very hard above ~10 gpg) with no working softener proves the spots are mineral scale the dishwasher cannot prevent. Confirm by testing water at the dishwasher's own supply line, not just a random tap: if a softener exists but the dishwasher line still tests hard, either the softener has failed or the dishwasher is plumbed ahead of it. The vinegar test confirms the deposit is mineral, not etching. Verify rinse aid and fill temperature so you do not blame the water for a dry, cold-fill, or rinse-aid-empty problem. Document the hardness reading at the dishwasher supply, the softener state, the rinse-aid state, the fill temperature, and the vinegar-test result. That record cleanly assigns the fix to water treatment versus chemistry versus machine, and it backs the recommendation if the homeowner pushes for a part swap instead.
Remediation
- Hard water, no softener: recommend a whole-house water softener (this is plumbing/water-treatment scope). As an interim measure, use rinse aid and a hard-water dishwasher additive, and ensure hot fill.
- Softener present but failed or out of salt: refill salt and force a regeneration, or refer for softener service; re-test downstream water.
- Empty/stuck rinse aid: fill and set the dispenser; rinse aid is essential in any hard-water home.
- Cold fill: confirm the hot supply and that the dishwasher's heat-dry/booster is working.
- Etching from over-treatment: reduce detergent dose and avoid the highest-temperature cycles; advise the homeowner that etched glass is permanent.
Re-verify by running a normal load after the water and chemistry are corrected and confirming spot-free, clear glassware.
