Dryer Thermal Fuse vs Thermistor Diagnostics
Symptom
Customer reports the dryer "doesn't heat" or "tumbles but clothes come out wet". The motor runs, the drum spins, the timer advances normally, but heated air does not reach the drum. In severe cases the dryer cools down to room temperature during a "heated" cycle, and a 90-minute cycle leaves clothes warmer than at the start but still damp.
The reflex assumption is "the heating element burned out". This is sometimes correct, but more often the heating element is intact and the problem is in the safety circuit (thermal fuse) or the temperature-control circuit (thermistor). Of "no heat" dryer service calls, the breakdown is approximately:

Understanding the difference between thermal fuse, thermistor, and thermostat is the diagnostic edge.
The components explained
Thermal fuse
A non-resettable single-use safety device. The thermal fuse opens (breaks the circuit) when the temperature exceeds a fixed threshold, typically 196 F (91 C) or 226 F (108 C) depending on the dryer.
- Location: in the exhaust duct or on the blower housing
- Behavior: when blown, the heat circuit is permanently open until the fuse is replaced
- Why it blows: vent restriction (lint buildup, kinked vent), high-limit thermostat failure, prolonged abnormal operation
- Resettable: NO. Replace; never short across.
High-limit thermostat (also called "thermal cutoff" in some brands)
A resettable bimetal safety device that opens when temperature exceeds a fixed threshold (typically 250 F / 121 C). When the dryer cools, the contacts reclose.
- Location: on the heating element housing
- Behavior: opens on overtemperature; recloses when cool; cycles repeatedly in a chronic overheat situation
- Why it trips: vent restriction, operating thermostat failure, heating element shorting to housing
- Resettable: YES, automatically when temperature drops
Operating thermostat (or "cycling thermostat")
A normal-operation control device that cycles the heating element on and off to maintain temperature in the drum. Typical setpoint 135 to 160 F depending on cycle selection.
- Location: in or near the exhaust duct
- Behavior: cycles in normal operation; if stuck closed, dryer overheats; if stuck open, dryer doesn't heat
- Diagnostic: continuity test at room temperature (should be closed)
Thermistor (newer dryers)
A variable-resistance temperature sensor used in modern dryers with electronic control boards. Replaces both the operating thermostat and adds finer temperature control.
- Location: in the exhaust duct or on the heater housing
- Resistance varies with temperature: typically 5,000 to 10,000 ohms at room temperature, decreasing as temperature rises
- Behavior: control board reads resistance, calculates temperature, modulates heater accordingly
- Failure mode: open thermistor reads infinite resistance (no heat), shorted thermistor reads zero ohms (continuous heat)
Diagnostic decision tree
Step 1: Verify the basics
Confirm:
- Dryer cycle setting is "Heated" not "Air Dry" or "No Heat"
- Door fully closes (door switch good)
- Lint screen is clean and installed
- Vent is open (do a quick external check: turn on the dryer, walk outside, feel for air movement from the vent terminal)
These accident causes are common.
Step 2: Test the thermal fuse
The thermal fuse is the cheapest part to replace (per the application) and the most common failure. Test first.
- Disconnect power
- Locate the thermal fuse (consult the diagram; usually on the blower housing or exhaust duct)
- Disconnect the fuse leads
- Multimeter on ohms (continuity)
- Healthy thermal fuse: zero ohms (closed)
- Blown thermal fuse: infinite ohms (open)
- Replace if blown
CRITICAL: a blown thermal fuse means there was an over-temperature event. The thermal fuse does not blow without a cause. Before declaring the repair complete, find and fix the cause. The most common cause: vent blockage. Walk the vent path from the dryer to the exterior termination and clean.
If the vent is open and the thermal fuse blew, suspect:
- High-limit thermostat failed closed (does not interrupt over-temperature)
- Operating thermostat failed closed (heat doesn't cycle off)
- Lint blockage inside the blower wheel
Skipping the root-cause investigation means the customer calls back in 2 to 4 weeks with another blown thermal fuse.
Step 3: Test the heating element
The heating element is a coil of resistance wire that converts electrical current to heat.
- Disconnect power
- Locate the heating element (typically at the rear of the cabinet)
- Disconnect the element leads
- Multimeter on ohms
- Healthy element: typically 8 to 50 ohms depending on dryer model (240V 5400W = 10.7 ohms typical residential)
- Open element (broken coil): infinite ohms
- Shorted element (winding to housing): low resistance to ground
Visually inspect the element for breaks. A coil with a visible break in the wire is the obvious problem.
For elements with no visible break and infinite resistance, the break is electrical (a connector or weld inside the element housing).
Step 4: Test the thermistor (electronic-control dryers)
Most dryers manufactured after 2010 with digital displays use a thermistor.
- Disconnect power
- Locate the thermistor (consult the diagram)
- Disconnect the leads
- Multimeter on ohms
- Healthy thermistor at room temperature (70 F / 21 C): typically 10,000 to 50,000 ohms
- Healthy thermistor at 130 F: typically 1,000 to 5,000 ohms (decreases with temperature)
- Specific chart per manufacturer
If the resistance is wildly off the chart, replace.
If the thermistor is shorted (zero ohms), the control board may not heat at all (board interprets as "already too hot"). If open (infinite), board cannot read temperature, default behavior varies by manufacturer.
Step 5: Test the high-limit thermostat
