Dryer Tumbles But No Heat After Vent Clean Decision Tree

Why this matters

A dryer that tumbles but produces no heat immediately after a vent cleaning is a high-probability thermal-fuse call, and knowing that up front loads the right part on the truck. The most common sequence is that a clogged vent caused repeated overheating, the one-shot thermal fuse finally opened to protect the unit, the homeowner or another tech then cleaned the vent, and now the dryer runs but stays cold because the non-resettable fuse is still open. The vent clean fixed the cause but not the consequence. The branch decisions confirm the thermal fuse, then verify the element and the rest of the heat chain so the same fuse does not open again, and confirm the vent clean actually restored airflow rather than just clearing the visible lint at the termination.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports the dryer spins and tumbles normally but blows only cool air, and the trigger event was a recent vent cleaning or a duct-blockage repair. The motor runs, the drum turns, the timer advances. No heat on every cycle. Usually no fault code on a timer-style unit; some electronic units may post a heat-related code.

The story is the tell: heat was lost at or just before the vent work, and the unit still tumbles. That pattern points straight at the protective chain, not the motor or drive.

Quick checks at the door

Confirm the unit is actually calling for heat: select a heated cycle, not Air Fluff or Air Dry, and confirm the moisture sensor or auto-dry logic is not ending heat early on a dry empty drum. Run a timed heated cycle to rule out cycle selection.

With power off and the back panel removed, locate the thermal fuse on the blower housing or exhaust duct and test it for continuity. An open one-shot thermal fuse is the headline cause after an overheat. Inspect the high-limit thermostat in the same area for an open as well.

Isolation tree

Branch A (thermal fuse open): the one-shot fuse opened from the prior overheat and is non-resettable. Confirm with continuity, then confirm the underlying overheat cause is gone: verify the vent clean restored full airflow with a free-vent or airflow test, and confirm the blower wheel is intact. Replace the fuse only after the airflow cause is confirmed corrected.

Branch B (heating element open): on electric units a heating element that opened, often coincident with the same overheat event, gives no heat. Measure element resistance against spec; an open or out-of-spec reading means replace the element. Inspect for a visible break or a coil that contacted ground.

Branch C (high-limit thermostat open): a high-limit that opened and did not reclose, or that opened permanently, breaks the heat circuit. Measure for closed continuity at room temperature; an open high-limit at room temperature is failed and must be replaced.

Branch D (vent clean incomplete, airflow still low): the cleaning addressed only the visible end. If a free-vent airflow test still shows restriction, the duct interior, a crushed transition, or a clogged blower wheel remains and will re-open any new fuse. Finish the airflow restoration before reassembly.

Branch E (gas unit, igniter or valve fault): on gas dryers no heat with good tumble can be a failed igniter, a failed flame sensor, or open gas valve coils, sometimes alongside an open thermal fuse. Confirm igniter glow and coil resistances against spec after confirming the thermal fuse and airflow. A common gas pattern is the igniter glowing then the burner failing to light because a high-limit in series with the coils opened; that puts you back at Branch A, an airflow problem masquerading as an ignition fault.

Branch F (electronic control not commanding heat): on board-controlled units a failed heat relay on the control, an open output, or a moisture-sensor strip shorted by detergent residue can suppress the heat call while tumble continues. After the protective devices and element check good, verify the control energizes the element circuit in a timed heated cycle by reading voltage at the element terminals; no voltage there with good upstream devices isolates the control.

Confirming the diagnosis

After replacing the open device and confirming airflow, run a full heated cycle with an exhaust thermometer just past the blower. Heat must arrive and hold for the cycle, exhaust temperature must stabilize within the manufacturer's range, and no protective device may open again. A free-vent airflow check or a measured exhaust airflow confirms the vent clean was adequate so the new fuse will not re-open.

Remediation by branch

Branch A: thermal fuse, plus confirmed airflow restoration.

Branch B: heating element.

Branch C: high-limit thermostat.

Branch D: complete vent or blower-wheel cleaning.

Branch E: igniter, flame sensor, or gas valve coils (gas units).

Branch F: control heat relay or main control board, moisture-sensor cleaning.

When to escalate

If a freshly replaced thermal fuse opens again on the next cycle, airflow is still restricted somewhere not yet found, or the element is partially shorted to ground and overheating locally. Re-measure airflow with the vent fully removed and measure element-to-ground; do not keep replacing fuses against a live overheat condition.

The thermal fuse is a non-resettable safety device that opened because of an overheat. Never jumper it or replace it without first confirming and correcting the airflow restriction that opened it. Returning a dryer to service with a defeated thermal fuse and a live restriction is a fire hazard. Confirm the vent meets IRC M1502.
