Garbage Disposal Service + Replacement
Why this matters
Garbage disposals are the cross-over service between appliance repair + plumbing. Most appliance techs can service them; many plumbers also. Average call. Disposals fail 5 - 10 years from corrosion, jamming, motor wear. Customer doesn't want to live without one + the install is 60 - 90 minutes - it's a fast + profitable job when set up right.
Disposal types
Continuous feed (most common residential)
- Wall switch operates; food fed through sink while running
- 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, 1 HP options
- Standard residential: 1/2 HP
Batch feed (some kitchens, especially older + safety-conscious)
- Cover required + acts as switch; food loaded then ground
- Safer (no risk of fingers in while running)
- Less common but premium
Air-switch operated (modern + ADA-compliant kitchens)
- Air-pressure switch button on countertop
- Eliminates wall switch in cabinet
- Common with island disposals
Sizing guide
- 1/3 HP: light residential, limited use, small kitchen - bargain unit; short lifespan
- 1/2 HP: standard residential - covers 90% of homes adequately
- 3/4 HP: heavy use, larger household, regular cooking - premium upgrade
- 1 HP: heaviest use, large home, multi-generational - long lifespan; quieter
Higher HP = quieter operation + faster grinding + longer motor life.
Common failures
Failure 1: Disposal won't run, no hum
- Power issue
- Test outlet under sink (most plugged into a switched outlet)
- Reset button on bottom of disposal (red button) - push to reset thermal trip
- Wall switch failure - test continuity
- Internal wiring fault - disposal replacement candidate
Failure 2: Disposal hums but doesn't spin
- JAMMED
- This is the #1 service call for disposals
- DO NOT keep flipping the switch - burns the motor
Clearing a jam (procedure)
- UNPLUG disposal at outlet under sink (don't trust the wall switch)
- With flashlight, look for visible obstruction (utensil, bone, food)
- Remove with tongs or pliers - NEVER hand
- Use the Allen wrench / disposal wrench from the BOTTOM CENTER of the disposal
- Rotate wrench back-and-forth until disposal turns freely
- Run cold water through; restore power
- Press reset button
- Test
If wrench won't rotate, the disposal is seized - replacement.
Failure 3: Disposal leaks
Top (sink flange)
- Plumber's putty failed
- Disassemble + re-bed flange in fresh putty
- 30 - 60 minutes labor
Side (dishwasher connection)
- Hose clamp loose OR damaged hose
- Tighten or replace
Bottom (housing seal)
- INTERNAL seal between motor + grind chamber - typically NON-repairable
- Disposal replacement
Failure 4: Slow draining or backing up
- Disposal full of food sludge - flush with cold water + run
- Below-disposal drain pipe clogged - separate from disposal; clear drain line
- Dishwasher line clogged - separate from disposal
Failure 5: Noisy operation
- New noise = something in the chamber
- Loose impeller, dropped utensil grinding against blades
- Some grinding noise normal; if exceptional, inspect
Replacement procedure (60 - 90 minutes)
- Prep: unplug; bucket under; towels; photo existing install
- Disconnect drain: loosen clamps + slip joint nuts; disconnect
- Disconnect dishwasher (if applicable): loosen clamp + slip off
- Remove disposal: rotate 1/4 turn at sink flange; supports weight (10 - 18 lbs)
- Flange decision: reuse if good condition; otherwise reinstall new with fresh plumber's putty + new mounting hardware
- Install new: KNOCKOUT dishwasher inlet plug FIRST if applicable; lift to flange + rotate 1/4 turn; connect discharge + dishwasher line; plug in power; verify reset button OUT
- Test: run cold water + disposal 30 seconds; check ALL connections for leak; verify dishwasher drain; customer walkthrough
Common install mistakes
- Forgot dishwasher knockout: if dishwasher line connects + plug not knocked out, dishwasher backs up. Easy to forget; embarrassing callback.
- Insufficient plumber's putty: leaks at flange. Use plenty; wipe excess.
- Cross-threaded slip joints: cracks the nut; leaks under load.
- Reset button tripped on new install: customer thinks it's dead. Always check the reset BEFORE leaving.
Customer education
- Cold water during grinding (cold solidifies fats; hot melts + coats pipes)
- Run for 30 seconds after grinding stops to flush
- Avoid: fibrous foods (celery, corn husks), starchy foods (potato peels), bones, fruit pits, eggshells (contrary to internet myth), coffee grounds
- OK: small soft scraps, ice cubes (sharpen blades - myth, but ice helps clear residue)
NEVER reach into a disposal with your hand, even with power off. Bystander could flip the switch; hands inside an unrunning disposal still have sharp grinding components at the chamber walls. Always use tongs or pliers OR rotate from below with the supplied Allen wrench. The reflex to "grab the thing out" causes ~2,000 ER visits per year + losing fingers is preventable. Train every tech + share with customers.
Decision: repair vs replace
- Jammed only, 5+ years old: replace if customer-preference; clear if budget
- Leaking internal: replace
- Motor seized: replace
- Continuous burnout under load: replace + upsell to higher HP
- Unit 10+ years: replace regardless of fault - bearings + motor coming to end
