Gas Range Clicks No Spark on One Burner Decision Tree
Why this matters
A gas range that clicks at all burners but produces spark on only one or more of the others is a focused isolation problem. The spark module is shared across all burners on most platforms, the spark electrodes are independent per burner, the burner caps and burner heads are independent, and moisture intrusion is the most common single confounder. Replacing the spark module when the burner cap is wet, or the burner cap when the electrode harness has a chafe, is the canonical wrong move. The tree below walks the single-burner-no-spark call from the cheapest fix to the most expensive in the order that produces the highest fix rate per minute.
Symptom presentation
Customer reports the gas range clicks normally when any burner knob is turned on, but one specific burner does not light while the others do. Sometimes the customer also reports the failed burner only fails after a spill or after a recent cleaning; this is a strong moisture indicator.
Confirm by turning each burner on one at a time and observing the spark at the electrode tip. A normal electrode produces a tight, white-blue spark from the tip to the ground (the burner ring or the burner head). A failed electrode either does not spark or sparks weakly in a long yellow trail.
Smell for gas. Gas is flowing at the affected burner during the click cycle (the gas valve opens with knob rotation); if no spark lights the gas, gas accumulates. Have the customer turn off the knob immediately after each test to limit accumulation, ventilate the room.
Quick checks at the door
Remove the burner cap on the affected burner. Inspect the cap and the burner head for grease, food residue, or moisture. The flame port and the electrode-to-ground path must be clean and dry. Wipe with a paper towel; for serious buildup, remove the cap and burner head, clean with hot soapy water, dry thoroughly.
Inspect the spark electrode tip. The electrode is a ceramic-bodied pin with a metal tip protruding into the burner cap area. The tip should be clean, dry, and intact. A cracked ceramic, a cracked or broken tip, or a wet ceramic body will fail.
Check the electrode-to-ground gap. Manufacturer spec is typically 0.08 to 0.14 inch from electrode tip to the burner head ground point. A gap that has been bent open by cleaning, by the customer pulling on the burner head, or by impact will fail to spark.
Confirm the burner head ground path. The burner head must seat fully on the orifice holder and make ground contact. A burner head that is dirty at the seating surface or that is misaligned (some platforms have an indexing pin that the customer can install backward after cleaning) loses ground.
Isolation tree
Branch A: burner cap, burner head, or electrode is wet from spill or cleaning. Dry all components thoroughly with a paper towel and let the unit sit for 4 to 6 hours in a ventilated kitchen. Test again. This is the single most common cause of "one burner does not spark" calls within 24 hours of a kitchen cleaning. Customer education only.
Branch B: burner head misseated or seating surface contaminated. Re-clean and re-seat. Confirm the burner head sits flat against the orifice base with no rocking.
Branch C: spark electrode gap incorrect. Bend the electrode tip back to the spec gap (consult the model service tag; typically 0.08 to 0.14 inch). Use a clean tool, do not flex the ceramic body.
Branch D: spark electrode ceramic is cracked or the tip is broken. Replace the electrode. The electrode harness on most platforms runs from the spark module under the cooktop through a ceramic insulator to the electrode tip; the entire assembly is replaced together on most platforms.
Branch E: spark electrode harness shorting to ground at a chafe point under the cooktop. Symptom: the harness arcs to chassis instead of to the burner tip, and clicking is heard but no spark at the burner. Inspect the harness for chafe at the bracket or pass-through. Reroute or replace.
Branch F: spark module is producing spark at all other burners but not at the affected channel. The spark module has a channel-dedicated output for each burner on most platforms (Whirlpool, Maytag, GE) and has a single shared output on some platforms (Frigidaire). For platforms with dedicated outputs, a single-channel failure can be a module fault; replace the module. For platforms with a shared output, a single-channel failure points at the electrode, not the module.
Branch G: gas valve at the affected burner is producing the click (knob turning, micro-switch closing) but no gas. Confirm by lighting the burner with a long match while the knob is held in. If the burner lights and stays lit with the match, the issue is spark; if it does not light even with the match, the gas valve is restricted and the call is a different tree.
Confirming the diagnosis
After each fix, light the affected burner using the spark ignition only (no match) and confirm clean, immediate ignition. Test all knob positions including the low simmer position.
For Branch A and B, run the unit for 24 hours of normal use and follow up; moisture-induced failures can recur if the customer cleans before drying.
For Branch D, confirm the spark gap on the new electrode meets the spec before reinstall.

Branch A and B: no parts; cleaning and customer education.
Branch C: no parts; gap adjustment.
Branch D: spark electrode assembly for the affected burner.
Branch E: electrode harness, harness routing clips.
Branch F: spark module (multi-channel platforms only).

When to escalate
A gas-range call where multiple burners progressively lose spark over weeks may indicate a corroded ground bond between the cooktop chassis and the gas supply, or a marginal supply pressure that is starving the spark module. Verify chassis ground bond per the manufacturer's installation manual and verify gas supply pressure within 5 to 14 inches water column for natural gas, 10 to 14 inches water column for LP, at the appliance regulator per ANSI Z21.1.
Gas is present at the burner during diagnostic testing. Light burners promptly with a long match if the spark is absent, or turn the knob off and ventilate. Never test a gas range with a household ignition source close to the cooktop. NFPA 54 (National Fuel Gas Code) governs gas supply and appliance connection.
