Gas Range Yellow Flame Decision Tree
Why this matters
A yellow burner flame on a gas range is a safety call before it is a service call. Yellow flame means incomplete combustion, and incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide. The customer reporting "the flame looks weird" may be reporting the visible symptom of a CO production rate that is already dangerous in a closed kitchen. The decision tree below resolves the cause within the first 10 minutes and defines when to leave the unit isolated and walk away versus when to adjust the air shutter and close the call.
Symptom presentation
Customer reports the burner flame is yellow, orange, or has yellow tips instead of the expected blue/blue-with-orange-inner-cone profile. Sometimes paired with sooting on pots, a chemical or "gas" smell, or a flame that lifts off the burner ports.
Healthy natural-gas flame profile: sharp blue inner cone, lighter blue outer envelope, no visible yellow tips except very transient flickers at flame edges. Propane (LP) flame profile is similar but slightly more compact and harder-edged. A flame that is predominantly yellow, lazy, sooty, or wrapping the bottom of a pan is not a cosmetic issue - it is incomplete combustion.
Probe questions:
- Has it always been like this, or recent?
- Did the customer recently switch from natural gas to propane or vice versa (a fuel conversion)?
- Was the range moved, dropped, or recently installed?
- Are all burners affected, or one?
- Symptoms in the household: headaches, fatigue, sleepy when home, CO alarm activations?
The last question is non-negotiable. If anyone in the household reports symptoms consistent with CO exposure or there has been an alarm, call EMS and ventilate; do not proceed with the service call as if it were routine.
Quick checks (under 5 minutes)
- Visual flame inspection on all surface burners. Yellow on one burner, blue on others = single-burner issue (air shutter, blocked port). Yellow on all burners = fuel-side issue (wrong gas, wrong orifice, wrong regulator, low pressure).
- CO detector on the kitchen counter if available - portable CO meter at the burner reading (held 6 inches above the burner, not in the flame). Above 50 ppm = unsafe operating condition; isolate the unit.
- Verify fuel type marking on the range nameplate against the actual supply. NG range fed propane (or vice versa) is a common DIY mistake on used-range installs and is the modal "all burners yellow" complaint after a recent move.
- Air shutter position on the burner head. Many shut completely or open partially - position visible at the venturi where the air enters the gas/air mixing tube.
- Burner port cleanliness. Spills crust over ports and block air-fuel premix.
Isolation tree
Branch 1 - Wrong gas type for the orifice (~30%). Range orifices are sized for either natural gas (NG, typical 7 inches water column supply pressure, larger orifice) or propane (LP, 11 inches water column supply pressure, smaller orifice). If the supply gas does not match the orifices the flame is yellow (NG-orifice fed LP runs over-rich; LP-orifice fed NG runs under-rich). Verify nameplate and supply. Conversion requires the OEM conversion kit and is a gas-fitter scope job.
Branch 2 - Misadjusted air shutter (~25%). Air shutter closed too far, insufficient primary air. Open the shutter incrementally and observe the flame. The healthy adjustment is the most-closed position that still produces a sharp blue cone. On most domestic ranges the air shutter is a sleeve at the venturi entrance secured by a screw.
Branch 3 - Blocked burner ports (~20%). Boil-over residue, food debris, or rust blocks ports. Pull the burner cap and bowl, brush ports clean with a brass-bristle brush (not steel - steel enlarges the port), inspect.
Branch 4 - Low supply pressure (~10%). Pressure at the range regulator is below spec. Spec is 7 inches w.c. inlet for NG (4 inches w.c. manifold), 11 inches w.c. inlet for LP (10 inches w.c. manifold). Below spec, flame burns lazy and yellow. Causes: undersized supply line, partially closed shutoff, failed regulator on a propane installation. Manometer reading at the range inlet is the definitive test.
Branch 5 - High supply pressure (~5%). Pressure above spec produces a lifted flame that can extinguish and re-ignite (flame-lifting), or a hard, noisy flame. Less commonly yellow. Verify with manometer and replace the regulator if internal lockup has failed.
Branch 6 - Wrong orifice installed at conversion (~5%). Previous tech converted the range but used the wrong orifice size (e.g., installed propane orifices but did not also adjust the regulator). Pull an orifice and verify the size marking matches the conversion kit OEM table.
Branch 7 - Failed regulator (~3%). Domestic-range regulator integrated into the gas valve assembly. Output pressure deviates from setpoint. Manometer reading at the manifold reveals.
Branch 8 - Damaged burner cap or burner head (~2%). Cracked or melted burner cap distorts the flame pattern. Visible. Replace cap.
Confirming diagnosis
- Wrong gas type: nameplate plus supply check. Manometer reading at the supply confirms NG vs LP pressure.
- Air shutter: adjust and observe. The healthy adjustment produces a sharp inner cone and no yellow tips on the customer's preferred cookware (heavy cookware can change the flame pattern slightly).
- Blocked ports: visual after cleaning. Inspect with a flashlight.
- Supply pressure: manometer at the inlet, both static (no load) and dynamic (all burners on high). Both readings should be in spec.
- Orifice size: stamped on the orifice body. Cross-check against the OEM conversion table.
- Regulator: manometer at the manifold reading after the regulator. Static and dynamic.
- Burner cap: visual.
Remediation
Wrong gas type / wrong orifices (Branches 1, 6)
OEM conversion kit installation required. This is gas-fitter scope work per NFPA 54 and most state plumbing/mechanical codes. Do not improvise orifices or modify the regulator outside the kit. If your scope does not include gas-fitter work, isolate the range (shut off the supply, tag the appliance) and refer to a licensed gas fitter.
Air shutter (Branch 2)
Adjust per the OEM service manual. Lock the shutter screw and verify the flame remains correct across the full range of burner sizes (simmer to high) and after the burner is hot.
Blocked ports (Branch 3)
Clean with brass brush, compressed air, and a soft cloth. Reseat the burner cap squarely.
Low / high supply pressure (Branches 4, 5)
Supply-side fix - regulator adjustment, line sizing, or supply replacement. Gas-fitter scope.
