Heat Pump Dryer Service Reference

Why this reference exists

Heat pump dryers are the fastest-growing appliance category in 2024-2025 + heavily incentivized by IRA + HEEHRA. They use 50-70% less energy than traditional vented dryers + don't require a vent. New territory for service techs: different mechanics, different failure modes. This reference covers the working service framework.

How they work

Traditional vented dryer:

  • Heat (resistance or gas) heats air
  • Hot dry air flows through tumbling clothes
  • Moist air vents to outside

Heat pump dryer:

  • Heat pump refrigerant cycle warms air
  • Hot dry air through clothes
  • Moist air condenses against cold evaporator coil
  • Condensate drains
  • Air recirculates (closed-loop)
  • NO vent needed

Result: half the energy use. No outdoor vent. Cooler exhaust (no AC fight). Slightly longer drying time.

Pros + cons (customer-facing)

Pros:

  • 50-70% less energy than traditional electric dryer
  • No outdoor vent required (apartment, condo, basement install)
  • Doesn't heat the laundry room
  • Federal tax credit available
  • Better for clothes (lower temperature, gentler drying)

  • Higher upfront cost ( vs traditional)
  • Drain or condensate pump required
  • Filter maintenance more critical
  • Less familiar to most consumers

Electrical:

Drainage:

Venting:

  • Old vent can be sealed or repurposed

Common service issues

Long drying times (most common complaint):

  • Clogged lint filter (clean every cycle, deep clean monthly)
  • Clogged heat exchanger/evaporator (annual cleaning)
  • Refrigerant leak (rare; check seasonally)
  • Drain blocked (water level rises, dryer pauses)
  • Wrong cycle selection (some cycles slower for fabric care)

Won't drain:

  • Internal pump failure
  • Clogged drain hose
  • Discharge height above max per manual
  • Customer's tank full + not emptied

No heat:

  • Compressor failure (rare; full replacement typically)
  • Inverter board failure
  • Refrigerant leak (low charge)
  • Thermostat or sensor failure

Display + electronic issues:

  • Often firmware-related (manufacturer reset procedure)
  • Communication board failure (high-cost; replacement)

Filter maintenance (critical)

Heat pump dryers have multiple filters:

  • Standard lint filter (door): every cycle
  • Secondary lint filter (at heat exchanger): every 1-3 months
  • Heat exchanger / condenser: every 6-12 months deep clean (some models)

Customer's manual specifies cleaning schedule. Most warranty claims trace to skipped filter maintenance.

Diagnostic procedure

Step 1: Customer interview

  • "When did issue start?"
  • "What error code, if any?"
  • "Filter cleaning history?"
  • "Drying time compared to before?"
  • "Specific cycles affected or all?"

Step 2: Inspect filters

  1. Door filter: clean
  2. Secondary filter (per model): clean
  3. Heat exchanger access: many models have a service door
  4. Photograph any debris found
  5. Run a cycle empty + observe

Step 3: Verify electrical

  • 240V at outlet (or 120V depending)
  • Breaker on
  • Cord undamaged
  • Plug seating correct

Step 4: Verify drainage

  • Hose unblocked
  • Pump operating (listen during cycle)
  • Drain destination accessible

Step 5: Run diagnostic mode

Each manufacturer has a service mode:
