New Fridge Not Cooling At Installation Decision Tree

Why this matters

A brand-new refrigerator that does not cool after delivery is the most common installation callback in residential appliance work. The pressure is to blame the unit, but a large fraction of "DOA" cool-down complaints are commissioning errors: the unit was laid down for transport and run too soon, the demo/showroom mode is still active, the thermostat is set off, or the supply outlet is dead. Working a disciplined tree before condemning a sealed system protects the warranty claim, avoids an unnecessary RMA, and keeps the install profitable. A new sealed-system diagnosis carries different liability than a service repair, so the isolation has to be defensible.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports the new unit "isn't getting cold" within a few hours to a day of delivery. The interior light works (so 120 V is present), but the box is at or near ambient. Listen first: is the compressor running, or is everything silent? A running compressor with no cooling points to charge, restriction, or airflow. A silent compressor points to control, mode, or power. New units frequently arrive in a transport state that forces a settling delay before the compressor will start.

Quick checks

  • Confirm the unit was upright for the recommended settling time after transport (commonly several hours) before judging cool-down. Oil that migrated into the lines during horizontal transport needs to drain back.
  • Verify the temperature setpoint is not in OFF, Sabbath, demo, or showroom mode. Many units ship in a store-display state that disables the compressor.
  • Confirm the outlet is live and not on a switched circuit or a GFCI that has tripped. Plug a known load or meter the receptacle: expect 115 to 125 V.
  • Check that doors seal and the unit is not packed wall-to-wall, blocking the rear or top condenser airflow. New installs are often pushed flush with zero clearance.
  • Listen for the evaporator fan and condenser fan. A new unit cooling the freezer but not the fresh-food side is an airflow/damper issue, not a sealed-system failure.

Isolation tree

Branch A: Compressor silent, light on.

  • Setpoint OFF or display mode active -> exit mode, set to mid-range, allow pulldown. Resolved.
  • Setpoint correct -> measure outlet 115 to 125 V. Dead or low -> supply problem (tripped breaker, switched outlet, failed receptacle). Not the appliance.
  • Outlet good, still silent after settling time -> compressor relay/inverter board or thermostat. Suspect control. New-unit warranty replacement path begins here.

Branch B: Compressor running, no cooling.

  • Both compartments warm, condenser hot then cooling unevenly -> low charge or restriction. On a sealed unit, confirm by feeling the suction line near the compressor (should sweat/cool) and reading low-side behavior. A factory undercharge or shipping-damage leak is a warranty sealed-system claim, not a field recharge on a unit still under manufacturer coverage.
  • Fresh-food warm, freezer cold -> damper or evaporator-fan airflow, not sealed system. Confirm fan runs and damper opens.
  • Condenser fan not running, compressor hot -> condenser fan motor fault. The compressor will short-cycle on thermal overload.

Branch C: Cooling partially, slow pulldown.

  • Doors not sealing, ambient very high, unit jammed against wall -> install/clearance, not a defect. Add clearance, reseat gaskets.

Confirming diagnosis

For a sealed-system suspicion on a new unit, do not cut into the system in the field unless authorized. Confirm with non-invasive evidence: suction line not cooling, freezer not dropping below the high 30s F after extended run, compressor cycling on overload (warm to the touch, clicking every couple of minutes). Document the receptacle voltage reading, the settling time elapsed, the setpoint state, and the running/silent status of the compressor. For a control branch, confirm the outlet is good and the unit still will not start the compressor after the settling delay and a mode reset.

Refrigerant work is regulated. Under EPA Section 608 (40 CFR Part 82), only a 608-certified technician may open or recover from a sealed system, and venting refrigerant is prohibited. On a unit still under manufacturer warranty, opening the sealed system in the field can void coverage. Confirm authorization before any invasive sealed-system work.

Remediation

  • Commissioning errors (settling time, display mode, setpoint, clearance): correct on site and re-verify pulldown. No parts.
  • Dead/low outlet: refer to electrical; confirm dedicated branch circuit and correct receptacle.
  • Control/inverter/relay on a new unit: process as a warranty part or unit replacement per manufacturer policy. Do not field-repair under warranty without authorization.
  • Confirmed sealed-system fault (undercharge, shipping leak): warranty sealed-system claim. Recovery, repair, evacuation, and recharge only by a 608-certified tech per spec, or unit replacement.

Always re-verify by logging compartment temperatures over an extended pulldown and confirming both fans run and the damper cycles.
