Why this matters

A new washer that walks across the floor or shakes violently on its first spin is the single most common front-load install callback, and the cause is almost always commissioning, not a defect. The shipping bolts (transit bolts) that lock the tub for transport are still installed, or the unit is not leveled, or the feet are not locked. Running a front-loader with transit bolts in place can damage the suspension and crack the tub, so this has to be caught on the first call. Misreading it as a bad suspension or a warranty unit wastes a replacement that will shake exactly the same way once installed wrong again.

The mechanical reason transit bolts matter: a front-load washer spins its outer tub on a free-floating spring-and-damper suspension specifically so the assembly can absorb the imbalance of wet laundry at 1,000-plus RPM. The transit bolts bolt that floating tub rigidly to the cabinet so it cannot move during shipping. Leave them in and the imbalance forces transfer straight into the cabinet and the floor, which is the violent shaking the customer reports, and the same rigid coupling overstresses the suspension the bolts were protecting. Removing them is not optional; it is the first step of every front-load commissioning.

Symptom presentation

Severe vibration, banging, or the cabinet physically moving during the spin portion of the cycle. Wash and tumble may be quiet; only high-RPM spin shows the fault. Listen for a hard metallic clunk (bolts/transit hardware) versus a rhythmic rocking (leveling). A unit that bangs hard and refuses to ramp to full spin often still has transit bolts in. A unit that rocks corner to corner is unlevel or sitting on soft flooring.

Quick checks

  • Confirm all transit/shipping bolts are removed from the rear panel. New front-loaders ship with three to four bolts through the back that lock the tub; they must come out before first use. This is the number-one cause.
  • Check the unit is level front-to-back and side-to-side with a bubble level on the top. Adjust the leveling feet, then lock the jam nuts.
  • Confirm all four feet contact the floor with no rock. Press each corner; any movement means a foot is high.
  • Confirm the floor is solid. A washer on a springy raised floor or thin subfloor amplifies normal vibration.
  • Confirm the load is not a single heavy item (a rug, a comforter) that cannot distribute. New owners often test with one bulky item.
  • Confirm pedestal/stack hardware (if used) is tight. A loose pedestal mount lets the whole machine rock even when the washer itself is balanced.
  • Count the bolts against the install sheet. Most front-loaders ship with three or four; pulling three and leaving one still locks the tub and produces the full symptom. Verify every bolt hole has a plug, which is the visual proof all bolts came out.

Branch A: Hard banging, will not reach full spin.

  • Transit bolts still installed -> remove all of them, install the supplied hole plugs, re-test. This is the default first finding and resolves most calls.
  • Bolts confirmed out, still banging -> check for a shipping spacer or foam block left in the tub, then move to suspension.

Branch B: Rhythmic rocking, walks across floor.

  • Unit not level / feet not locked -> level with a bubble level, lower and lock the rear self-leveling feet or adjust manually, tighten jam nuts. Re-test.
  • All feet down but floor flexes -> reinforce or relocate; this is a site condition, not a unit fault.

Branch C: Vibration only with certain loads.

  • Single bulky item or persistent imbalance -> the machine cannot balance one heavy item. Educate on load distribution; confirm a balanced mixed load spins normally.

Branch D: Bolts out, level good, balanced load, still excessive.

  • Now suspect suspension: a shock/strut or spring damaged in transit, or a suspension rod unseated. Confirm by spinning empty and watching tub travel. A genuinely defective new suspension is a warranty part.

Confirming diagnosis

Work the commissioning items first and re-spin after each. The transit-bolt check is conclusive: if the bolts were in, the fix is removal, full stop. After leveling, confirm with a level on the top deck reading plumb both side-to-side and front-to-back, and a corner-press test that finds no rock at any of the four feet. Only after bolts-out, level-confirmed, locked-feet, and a balanced load still shakes do you open the suspension question. Spin empty and watch the tub: a healthy suspension lets the tub settle quickly into a smooth orbit, while a transit-damaged shock or strut lets it bounce or drift to one side. Reach in (power off) and push the tub by hand; a good damper resists and returns slowly, a failed one moves freely or knocks. An unseated suspension rod or spring shows as the tub hanging low or cocked. Document the transit-bolt state, the bolt-plug count, the level readings, and the empty-spin behavior; that record separates "installer correction" from "warranty part" and protects against a customer claim that the unit was defective out of the box.

Remediation

  • Transit bolts present: remove all bolts, fit hole plugs, re-test. No parts.
  • Unlevel / unlocked feet: level the cabinet, lock the jam nuts on the feet, re-test.
  • Soft/springy floor: reinforce, relocate, or fit an anti-vibration pad; document as a site condition.
  • Imbalanced single-item loads: educate on balanced loading.
  • Confirmed transit-damaged shock, strut, spring, or unseated suspension rod: warranty part per manufacturer policy after all commissioning items are verified correct.

Re-verify by running a full spin with a normal balanced load and confirming the cabinet stays put with no walking or hard banging.
