Why this matters
Oven + range service has higher tech skill requirements than refrigerator OR washer - gas safety, high voltage, multi-fuel diagnostics. Service call. Most ovens last 15 - 20 years but customer expectation for "smart oven" features + induction adoption has tightened the technology cycle. Techs trained in induction + smart-oven boards become the experts customers seek.

Common failures: gas range
Surface burner won't light
- Spark ignitor: each burner has its own ignitor; click when knob turned. No click = ignitor electrode or module
- Spark module: if NO burners spark, module failure
- Burner port clogged: food spillover clogs port; clean with toothpick or thin wire
- Gas valve not opening: confirm gas supply pressure (3.5" WC propane, 7" WC natural)
- Air shutter mis-adjusted: yellow flame = too rich; clean blue + tip = correct
Oven burner won't ignite
- Igniter resistance check: most modern ovens use hot-surface igniter (HSI); resistance 40 - 200 ohms cold
- HSI cracked or aged: doesn't draw enough current to open gas valve; replace
- Safety valve / gas valve: 24V coil; replace if open coil
- Thermostat sensor: thermistor or capillary tube; reads oven temp
Oven won't reach set temperature
- Thermostat / temperature sensor: faulty reading
- Door not sealing: hinge sag OR gasket damage
- HSI weak: opens valve briefly but reduces flame at hold
Pilot light won't stay lit (older gas)
- Thermocouple failed - replace
- Pilot orifice partially clogged
- Drafty kitchen
Common failures: electric range
Burner element won't heat
- Coil element burnout: visual inspection often shows burn-through
- Element terminal corrosion: clean, sometimes replace receptacle
- Switch (rotary or touch): test continuity at each position
- Smoothtop radiant element: behind glass; test resistance + replace through cooktop access
Smoothtop cracked
- Often customer-caused (impact, dropped pot)
- Replace glass cooktop; 60 - 90 minutes labor
Oven element won't heat
- Bake element (bottom): visual for break or blistering; resistance check (15 - 30 ohms typical)
- Broil element (top): same
Self-clean cycle issues
- Door latch motor: locks door during self-clean
- Thermal fuse / TCO: trips during self-clean if door doesn't lock
- Common: customer ran self-clean, oven won't heat afterward: thermal fuse tripped, replace
Common failures: induction range
Cookware not detected
- Magnet test on customer's cookware bottom: magnet sticks = induction-compatible
- Educate customer on ferromagnetic requirement (cast iron + magnetic stainless work; aluminum + copper + ceramic do NOT)
Element won't heat
- Induction coil failure: replace entire element
Error codes
- Code-specific (varies by brand)
- Most reset attempts succeed without parts
Common failures: control board / display
- Most modern oven control boards are model-specific
- Common: button presses ignored, display segments out, scheduled-cook fails

Service-call diagnostic workflow
Step 1: Customer interview
- When did the failure start?
- Was there a power event, gas event, or self-clean cycle preceding?
- Is the failure intermittent or constant?
- Burner-specific or whole oven?
Step 2: Inspection
- Power confirmed at outlet OR breaker (electric range needs 240V; test both legs)
- Gas supply confirmed (gas range)
- Visual for obvious damage
Step 3: Symptom-specific diagnosis (per above)
Step 4: Quote + parts
- Many appliances have parts available even at 15 - 20 year mark
- High-end + specialty parts may be discontinued - discuss with customer
Gas safety (mandatory)
- ALWAYS check for gas leaks at fittings after any disassembly - soap solution
- Carbon monoxide concern: gas ovens with yellow flame or sooty surfaces generate CO
- CO detector recommendation: gas-equipped homes
- Confirm flue + ventilation per appliance + range hood specs
NEVER reset a tripped thermal fuse without investigating the cause. The fuse is a safety device that tripped because something overheated - failed igniter, stuck element, latch fault during self-clean. Replacing the fuse + ignoring the cause leads to repeat failure OR fire risk. Document what caused the trip + address the underlying part. Fuses are ; root cause is ; fire damage is unlimited.
Decision: repair vs replace
- Range <8 years: repair
- Range 8 - 15 years: case-by-case, depends on part cost vs replacement
- Range 15+ years: discuss replacement; safety-critical (gas) repairs always
- Premium brand (Viking, Wolf, Thermador, La Cornue): higher repair threshold
