Gas Range Burner Clicks After Cleaning Only When Humid Decision Tree
Why this matters
A gas range that clicks continuously after cleaning, and only on humid days, is a moisture-intrusion problem nearly every time, but it gets misdiagnosed as a failed spark module because the click pattern looks electrical. Surface burner spark ignition fires all igniters in parallel from one module, so a single wet or shorted igniter, or a burner cap seated in spilled water, makes the whole set click nonstop. Cleaning introduces water under the cooktop and into the igniter ceramics, and high humidity keeps it from drying, so the symptom is environmental, not a dead part. A tech who sells a spark module on the first visit will get a callback the next dry day when it clicks anyway, or the next wet day after the module did nothing. Knowing that humidity and cleaning are the trigger lets you dry, reseat, and find the one bad igniter instead of cannon-firing parts.
Symptom presentation
The owner reports all or several burners clicking on their own, often right after wiping the cooktop or on a rainy day, sometimes clicking with no knob turned. The burners may still light despite the clicking. The pattern correlates with moisture: it stops when the cooktop dries and returns when wet. If the clicking is on one burner only and tied to a knob position, suspect that switch or igniter directly. If it clicks bone-dry and never lights, that is a different fault, a shorted igniter or module that is permanently in spark.
Quick checks
Power the range off at the breaker, then restore power and observe whether clicking resumes when dry versus wet. Lift each burner cap and base and check for standing water, food paste in the igniter gap, or a cap seated crooked, all of which bridge the spark gap. Confirm caps and bases are fully dry and correctly oriented; a cap off-center is a frequent post-cleaning cause. Verify the cooktop is level, since a tilt pools cleaning water toward one igniter. Note the spark gap should be roughly the manufacturer's spec (commonly around 1/8 inch) between electrode tip and the burner cap edge; a gap closed by debris or a bent electrode lowers the breakdown voltage and lets humidity trigger a stray spark. Record whether the clicking happens with knobs off (continuous, all burners) or only when one knob is turned, since the all-burner, knobs-off pattern is the moisture signature and a single-knob pattern points at that burner's switch.
Isolation tree
Branch 1, dry and reseat. Remove all caps and bases, dry the igniters and ports thoroughly with compressed air or time, clear any debris from the spark gap with a wooden pick, and reseat each cap squarely. Power up. If clicking stops, the cause was moisture and seating; advise the owner to dry caps after cleaning and avoid flooding the cooktop. This resolves the majority of humid-day cases.
Branch 2, isolate the offending igniter. If clicking persists when dry, the module is firing because one igniter or its lead is shorted. With power off, disconnect igniter leads one at a time at the module (or lift each spark electrode), restore power, and find which igniter, when disconnected, stops the all-burner clicking. That igniter or its wire has a cracked ceramic or a carbon track that conducts when humid. Replace the cracked igniter/electrode.
Branch 3, switch and harness moisture. A gas valve switch contaminated by spillage can hold the spark circuit closed. Inspect the switch bodies and the harness routing under the cooktop for moisture wicking or chafe. Dry and, if a switch reads shorted, replace it. A water-tracked harness near the module can also keep it in spark.
Branch 4, spark module. Only after igniters, seating, and switches are cleared does the module become the suspect. If every igniter lead is disconnected and the module still clicks (sparks with no load), the module's internal trigger is failing and it must be replaced. A module that goes quiet when one igniter is unplugged is doing its job; the fault is that igniter, not the module. Before condemning the module, confirm the module ground is intact, because a module relying on a chassis ground that has corroded or loosened can self-trigger or click erratically, mimicking an internal fault. Reestablishing a clean ground sometimes silences a module that appeared dead.
Confirming diagnosis
The test is disconnect-to-silence. If unplugging one igniter stops the storm, that igniter is the fault. If drying and reseating stops it, moisture was the fault. If nothing connected stops it and the module sparks bare, replace the module. Confirm any fix by running each burner through ignition twice, then wetting the cooktop lightly to simulate the humid-day trigger and verifying no spurious clicking returns.
Remediation
For moisture cases, dry and reseat, then counsel the owner on cleaning practice (dry caps, do not pour water on the cooktop). For a cracked igniter, replace that spark electrode and verify clean single-burner ignition. For a shorted switch, replace it. For a failed module, replace it and verify all burners light on demand without self-clicking. Always reseat caps level and confirm the cooktop is level so water cannot pool at one igniter. Route any harness that runs near the sealed burner bases away from low spots where condensation collects, and confirm the igniter ceramics are intact with no hairline cracks, since a crack invisible when dry conducts as soon as humidity rises. Leave the owner with the practice that resolves most repeat calls: wipe the cooktop damp rather than flooding it, dry the caps and bases before reseating, and never run the burners with water pooled around an igniter.
