Refrigerator Clicks Every 3min No Cool Decision Tree
Why this matters
A refrigerator that produces a click every 3 minutes (sometimes every 2 to 5 minutes) without ever sustaining compressor run is the classic start-component / overload / compressor failure pattern, but the three subcomponents fail with similar audio symptoms and the correct fix depends on which is the actual root cause. Replacing the start relay (PTCR or 3-in-1 device) on a unit with a shorted compressor wastes the relay; replacing the compressor on a unit with a failed PTCR throws thousands of dollars of repair value at the wall. The tree below uses the compressor's own electrical behavior to split the three branches in 10 minutes.
Symptom presentation
Customer reports the fridge is no longer cold, and reports a clicking sound from the back of the unit at a regular interval. Confirm by listening at the compressor; a 2 to 5 minute interval click that aligns with the compressor briefly attempting to start (a momentary hum or buzz) and then giving up is the symptom for this tree.
Confirm the compressor is the source of the click, not the icemaker or the defrost timer. A finger on the compressor shell during a click cycle should sense a brief motor jolt at the click instant.
Quick checks at the door
Pull the refrigerator out from the wall. Cut power. Remove the rear access cover at the compressor area. Identify the start component:
- PTCR (Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistor): a small plastic block that plugs onto the compressor terminals. Used on most consumer refrigerators 2000s and newer.
- 3-in-1 (or equivalent universal start kit): aftermarket combined start relay, start capacitor, and overload. Sometimes installed by prior service.
- Discrete relay and capacitor: older units may have separate components.
Identify the compressor terminals: most residential compressors have a common (C), start (S), and run (R) terminal. The terminal arrangement is on a small label on the compressor body or in the service-manual section for the platform.
Isolation tree
Branch A: PTCR failed open. Measure resistance across the PTCR with the unit cold. Spec is typically under 25 ohms at room temperature. A reading well above 100 ohms or open circuit confirms a failed PTCR. Replace.
Branch B: PTCR / start relay measures good. Measure compressor windings with the relay removed. Standard residential compressor specs:
- C to S (start winding): typically 4 to 10 ohms.
- C to R (run winding): typically 1 to 4 ohms.
- S to R: should equal C-S plus C-R, demonstrating the windings are connected through the common terminal.
- Any terminal to compressor case (ground): infinite resistance. A reading less than 1 megohm to ground is a shorted compressor.
A compressor with windings in spec and no short to ground is electrically intact. A compressor with one winding open or shorted is failed.
Branch C: compressor measures shorted to ground. Compressor failed (motor winding burnout). On a unit older than 10 years, this is a quote-replacement call.
Branch D: compressor windings in spec, PTCR in spec, but compressor still clicks every 3 minutes. Measure incoming line voltage at the compressor while the unit attempts to start. A line voltage that sags below 105 V during start (low supply voltage or marginal building wiring) will trip the overload. Confirm with the customer whether other appliances on the same circuit have similar problems. Refer to an electrician if a low-voltage condition is confirmed.
Branch E: line voltage normal, compressor electrically good, PTCR good, but the overload is tripping anyway. The overload protector (sometimes integrated into the PTCR or 3-in-1, sometimes a separate disc on the compressor body) is failing early. Replace.
Branch F: compressor windings in spec, PTCR good, line voltage good, overload good, but the compressor still clicks and does not start. The compressor is mechanically seized (rotor will not turn under start torque due to internal failure). Compressor is failed; quote replacement.
Branch G: 3-in-1 universal start kit installed by prior service. These kits are a workaround for a failed PTCR or a low-voltage condition. They mask the underlying issue. If the kit is installed and the unit is now failing again, the underlying issue (compressor wear, low voltage, marginal valve) is progressing and the unit is likely beyond economic repair.
Confirming the diagnosis
After PTCR replacement (Branch A), the compressor should start and run continuously for at least 20 minutes during pull-down. Listen for sustained compressor hum with no clicks.
After overload replacement (Branch E), run the unit through a full 8 hour pull-down cycle and confirm no overload trips.
For Branch C, D, F, document the test results with measured ohm values and voltage readings for the work order. The customer will want to see the measurement that condemned the compressor.
Remediation parts list by branch
Branch A: PTCR for the specific compressor model. Match to the existing part number; do not substitute without confirming compressor compatibility.
Branch B: no parts; further diagnosis required.
Branch C, F: compressor replacement (sealed-system service required, EPA Section 608 certification mandatory) or unit replacement.
Branch D: no appliance parts; refer to an electrician for low-voltage diagnosis at the panel and supply.
Branch E: overload protector matching the compressor.
Branch G: no parts; quote unit replacement.
When to quote replacement
A unit older than 10 years with a confirmed compressor failure (Branch C or F) crosses the buy-vs-fix threshold for the vast majority of customers. Frame the conversation with: model age, parts price, EPA 608 sealed-system labor charge, expected residual life on a repaired sealed system (8 to 12 years on a well-executed compressor replacement), and the DOE 10 CFR Part 430 efficiency tier of a replacement unit. Document the recommendation in writing.
A unit on its second compressor in 15 years is signaling either marginal supply voltage that is shortening compressor life or a chronic over-amperage condition; investigate before installing a third compressor.
Compressor replacement requires EPA Section 608 certification (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) for refrigerant recovery, evacuation, and recharge. Do not open a sealed refrigeration system without certification.
