Replace a Refrigerator Defrost Heater

Goal

Replace a failed defrost heater on a residential refrigerator. The defrost heater is one of three components in the auto-defrost cycle (heater, thermostat, timer/board). When the heater fails, frost builds up on the evaporator coil until it blocks airflow + the refrigerator stops cooling. Specific repair; matched part needed.

Prerequisites

  • Replacement defrost heater matched by:
    • Refrigerator make + model + year
    • Heater wattage (varies by manufacturer)
    • Mounting style (clamp, slip-on, OR specific bracket)
  • Multimeter
  • Phillips screwdriver, nut driver
  • Hair dryer OR space heater (for thawing residual ice during diagnosis)
  • 60 - 90 minutes

Steps

  1. Confirm the heater is the issue. Frost on the evaporator coil with the freezer warming = defrost system failure. But which component? Three candidates:
  • Heater (this article): heating element failed open
  • Defrost thermostat (bimetal): doesn't close at temperature, so heater never activates
  • Defrost timer / board: doesn't initiate the defrost cycle
  1. Test the heater with a multimeter:
  • Unplug refrigerator
  • Access the heater (back panel of freezer compartment removed)
  • Test heater continuity end-to-end
  • Open circuit = bad heater; replace
  • Continuous (reads resistance) = heater is OK; check thermostat or timer
  1. Cut power. Unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet.
  2. Empty the freezer. Or move contents to a cooler for the duration.
  3. Access the evaporator coil:
  • Remove freezer drawers + shelves
  • Remove the back panel of the freezer compartment (typically Phillips screws + clips)
  • Coil + defrost heater are visible behind this panel
  1. Photograph the existing setup. Wiring, heater orientation, mounting.
  2. If frost is heavy: thaw with a hair dryer OR space heater carefully. Don't damage the coil with the heat source.
  3. Disconnect the heater at both end terminals. May be quick-disconnect OR may require unscrewing.
  4. Remove the heater from its mounts. Some are clipped under the coil; some are bracket-mounted.
  5. Install the new heater in the same orientation as the old.
  6. Connect wiring to both terminals.
  7. Replace the back panel. Restore freezer drawers.
  8. Plug refrigerator back in. Verify operation:
  • Compressor running
  • Evaporator fan blowing
  • Defrost cycle should occur every 8 - 12 hours; observe over a day to verify

Verification

  • Defrost cycle initiates per the timer / board schedule
  • Heater warms during the defrost cycle (verify by touch through panel after 5 minutes)
  • Freezer back to normal cooling temp within 12 - 24 hours
  • No frost re-accumulation on the evaporator coil after 48 hours of operation

Troubleshooting

  • Frost returns after replacement: defrost thermostat or board still bad. Replace whichever wasn't replaced.
  • Heater wires sparked OR melted insulation: voltage issue OR short circuit. Verify wire integrity before replacement.
  • Refrigerator runs but doesn't cool after repair: separate issue (failed compressor, refrigerant leak, blocked condenser). See Refrigerator Not Cooling Diagnostic.
  • Hair dryer thawing process damages coil: too much heat too quickly. Use space heater at lower power OR allow natural thaw with refrigerator running fan-only.

Refrigerators contain refrigerant - typically R-134a, R-600a (isobutane), or newer R-1234yf. R-600a is FLAMMABLE; sparking near a leaked-refrigerant unit (electrical work near a damaged evaporator coil) is a fire hazard. Verify no refrigerant leak BEFORE any electrical work; if leak is present, recover refrigerant per EPA Section 608 before continuing.
