Replace a Dishwasher Drain Pump

Goal

Replace the drain pump on a residential dishwasher that won't drain at the end of a cycle. After "filter clogged," drain-pump failure is the #2 cause of "dishwasher won't drain" calls. A 45-minute repair restores a unit that customers would otherwise replace.

Prerequisites

  • Replacement drain pump matched to the dishwasher make/model + year
  • Towels (for the residual water you'll spill - there's always some)
  • Multimeter
  • Phillips + Torx drivers (T20 + T25 cover most dishwashers)
  • Channel-lock pliers
  • Camera / phone for wiring photos
  • 45 minutes

Steps

  1. Confirm the diagnosis. Run a cycle and watch:
  • Water enters? Then drains at end? โ†’ not the pump.
  • Water enters? Sits at end of cycle? โ†’ drain pump or hose or filter.
  • Filter clean and hose unblocked? โ†’ pump.
  1. Cut power. Breaker off. Verify dead at the terminal block under the kick plate before proceeding.
  2. Cut water. Close the dishwasher's supply shutoff (usually under the sink, sometimes behind a panel).
  3. Pull the dishwasher out. Remove the toe-kick. Locate the screws securing the unit to the countertop above (typically 2 in the top of the door frame). Disconnect the drain hose at the air gap or disposal. Mop up residual.
  4. Tilt the dishwasher onto its back to access the underside. The drain pump is mounted to the underside of the tub.
  5. Photograph the wiring before disconnecting. Two wires on most pumps; some are connectorized, others screw-terminal.
  6. Disconnect the drain hose at the pump outlet. Loosen the spring clamp or screw clamp.
  7. Disconnect the pump from the tub. Most modern pumps are quarter-turn - twist counter-clockwise to release from the bayonet mount. Older designs use 2 - 4 screws.
  8. Inspect the impeller while you have it out. Broken vanes indicate something hit it; check the filter assembly above the pump for the missing piece.
  9. Install the new pump. Quarter-turn clockwise to lock; verify the seal is seated. Reconnect drain hose with a NEW clamp (don't reuse a stretched spring clamp).
  10. Reconnect the wiring per your photo.
  11. Restore the dishwasher to position. Reconnect the supply, drain hose, secure to countertop, replace toe-kick.
  12. Restore power. Run a rinse-only cycle. Watch for:
  • Drain hose vibration (clamp loose)
  • Drips at the pump base (seal failure or cross-threaded mount)
  • Pump operation (audible during the drain portion)
  1. Run a full cycle to verify the dishwasher drains completely. Inspect for leaks one more time before reinstalling the toe-kick.

Verification

  • Dishwasher drains within the manufacturer's spec time (typically 30 - 90 seconds)
  • No water remains in the basin at end of cycle
  • No leaks at the pump base or hose clamp after 2 cycles
  • Customer demonstrates running a full cycle before you leave

Troubleshooting

  • New pump installed but still won't drain: verify the drain hose has the proper high loop (24" above the floor, secured to the underside of the counter). A missing high loop allows siphoning + back-flow.
  • Drains but leaks: pump seal seating issue. Pull and reinstall; verify the O-ring isn't pinched.
  • Drains intermittently: control board sending the drain signal sporadically. That's a board diagnosis, separate from the pump.

Standing water in the dishwasher basin may have been sitting for days. It's bacterial, often contains food debris, and stains. Towel the area before lifting the unit - and never lift while liquid is sloshing inside; it splashes onto live wiring during disassembly.
