Samsung Bespoke Fridge 22E Defrost Fault Tree
Why this matters
The 22 E error on Samsung Bespoke and recent French-door refrigerators is a fridge-defrost fault: the control detected an abnormality in the fresh-food (or, on some models, the relevant evaporator's) defrost circuit, most often the defrost heater or the defrost temperature sensor associated with that evaporator. On a Samsung multi-evaporator or twin-cooling design, getting the right evaporator and the right defrost components matters, because the wrong-section repair leaves the fault active. The 22 E tree is a tight loop: the defrost heater element, the defrost (bimetal) thermostat or fuse, the defrost sensor/thermistor, the wiring harness to that evaporator, and the main PCB's defrost driver. Walking it in order and confirming with the actual evaporator condition (frosted or clear) is what keeps you from replacing a PCB when a heater open or a sensor out of range is the real 22 E trigger.
Symptom presentation
Customer reports a 22 E code, often accompanied by warming in the affected compartment, frost buildup, or reduced cooling. The code may appear after a power event or accumulate over days as the evaporator ices. On Bespoke panels and the SmartThings app the code mirrors.
Reproduce/confirm by entering Samsung's forced-defrost test mode (model-specific button sequence) and observing whether the defrost heater energizes and whether the evaporator clears. Inspect the affected evaporator behind its cover for frost: heavy frost with no heat during forced defrost confirms a heater-side fault.
Quick checks at the door
Read the defrost sensor/thermistor resistance against Samsung's temperature-resistance table for the model. A sensor reading open, shorted, or far out of its expected range at the measured temperature is a direct 22 E cause and is a common one. Confirm the sensor connector is seated.
Inspect the affected evaporator for frost. A frosted-over coil with the compartment warming tells you the defrost system is not clearing the coil, focusing the tree on the heater and its protective devices.
Isolation tree
Branch A (defrost sensor / thermistor out of range): the defrost temperature sensor is open, shorted, or reading wrong. Measure resistance against Samsung's table at known temperature. Replace the defrost sensor if out of range. This is a frequent and inexpensive 22 E cause; check it before the heater.
Branch B (defrost heater open): in forced-defrost mode the heater fails to warm the evaporator and the coil stays frosted. Measure heater element resistance for continuity; an open heater throws 22 E because the control sees no defrost progress / abnormal feedback. Replace the defrost heater.
Branch C (defrost bimetal / thermal fuse open): the bimetal thermostat or thermal fuse in series with the heater has opened (one-shot fuse) or failed open, breaking the heater circuit even though the heater element itself is good. Test continuity. Replace the bimetal/fuse, and confirm there was no overtemperature root cause behind a blown one-shot fuse.
Branch D (harness / connector to evaporator): the wiring to the heater and sensor at the affected evaporator can corrode or back out (this area sees moisture). Inspect and reseat or repair connectors. A high-resistance connection mimics an open heater or a wrong sensor reading.
Branch E (main PCB defrost driver): if sensor, heater, bimetal/fuse, and harness all test good and the heater still does not energize on a confirmed forced-defrost command, the defrost driver on the main PCB is the remaining cause. Confirm the board commands defrost and that drive voltage does not reach the heater despite a good circuit. Replace the main PCB.
Branch F (ice blocking after repair / drain): once the defrost circuit is restored, a clogged defrost drain can refreeze and re-create cooling complaints (though typically a different code). Clear the defrost drain and confirm it routes to the pan.
Confirming the diagnosis
After the repair, run a forced-defrost cycle in service mode and confirm the heater energizes, the evaporator clears completely, and the defrost sensor reads correctly through the cycle. Clear the 22 E code and run the refrigerator through a normal cooling cycle, confirming the affected compartment returns to setpoint and the code does not reappear over several hours. Re-enter diagnostics to confirm no stored fault. For a one-shot fuse replacement (Branch C), confirm there was no overtemperature cause so the new fuse does not blow again.
Remediation by branch
Branch A: defrost temperature sensor / thermistor.
Branch B: defrost heater element.
Branch C: defrost bimetal thermostat / thermal fuse (after ruling out an overtemperature root cause).
Branch D: evaporator harness / connectors.
Branch E: main PCB (defrost driver section).
Branch F: defrost drain clearing.

Confirm which evaporator the 22 E points to on multi-evaporator models, because Samsung uses separate defrost circuits and the code may target a specific compartment; replacing the wrong compartment's heater leaves the fault active. Always work from Samsung's model-specific service manual for the forced-defrost entry sequence and the sensor resistance table, since these differ across the Bespoke and French-door lineup. Note that some 22 E events follow a power interruption that left the control mid-defrost; clearing the code and confirming a clean forced-defrost run before ordering parts can save an unnecessary component swap.
