Viking 3 Series Range Spark Module Replacement
Why this matters
The Viking 3 Series gas range (VGCC, VGSC, and VGIC sub-families) uses a single spark module that drives every surface burner igniter. A failed module presents as either "no spark on any burner" or "all burners spark continuously with no shut-off when knob is released." The repair is straightforward when done with the correct procedure, but Viking parts are expensive and the model-to-part-number mapping is unforgiving - the wrong module installs physically but produces erratic spark timing that damages the igniter electrodes within weeks. This how-to documents the correct identification, removal, and installation sequence so you complete the call in one visit.
Tools and parts required
- Replacement spark module, OEM Viking part number matched to the unit's serial number plate (see Step 1).
- Number 2 Phillips screwdriver, magnetic tip.
- Quarter-inch nut driver.
- Combustible gas detector (your own, calibrated).
- Manometer or digital gas pressure tester.
- Multimeter with continuity setting.
- Wire labeler or masking tape and Sharpie.
- Heat-resistant work gloves.
Step 1 - Verify the model and identify the correct part
The Viking 3 Series spans 2009 to present in multiple revisions. The spark module changed twice during the production run:
- Pre-2014 build (serial number starts with letters before M): part PN 069050-000.
- 2014 to 2018 (serial number M-series): part PN PD110014.
- 2018 to present (serial number P-series and later): part PN PD140030.
Locate the serial number plate behind the lower front kick panel or on the right side wall of the oven cavity. Match the serial date code to the part table. Do NOT substitute parts across generations - the electrical timing differs.
Step 2 - Cut gas and power before service
This is a gas appliance with line-voltage controls. Both must be disabled before service:
- Close the gas shutoff valve behind the range (visually confirm closed by feeling the handle stop and looking for the perpendicular-to-pipe orientation).
- Unplug the range from its dedicated outlet OR trip the breaker if the outlet is hard-wired.
- Verify zero voltage at the spark module's input leads with a multimeter before touching any wire.
- Verify zero gas with a calibrated combustible gas detector at the burner ports - if any gas is detected after the valve is closed, stop work and inform the customer the valve is faulty.
Step 3 - Remove the cooktop
The spark module sits below the cooktop on the right side of the range frame. Access requires lifting the cooktop:
- Remove all surface burner caps and burner heads. Place in a parts bin in the order removed so reassembly is sequential.
- Remove the grates.
- Remove the screws at the front lip of the cooktop (typically four Phillips screws under the front edge).
- Lift the front of the cooktop and tip it backward to rest against the backsplash. Some 3 Series units have a prop rod; others rely on the gas line flex to hold the position. Do not stress the gas line - use a wood prop if the natural hold is uncertain.
Step 4 - Photograph and label all wiring
Before disconnecting any wire, photograph the spark module's wiring from three angles. Then label each wire with its terminal designation. The Viking 3 Series module has up to twelve connections:
- AC input: L and N (line voltage in).
- Burner switches: SW1 through SW6 (one per burner, from the knob switches).
- Spark outputs: SP1 through SP6 (one per burner igniter electrode).
- Ground: GND (chassis).
Labels prevent the most common rookie mistake: cross-wiring SP outputs so the wrong burner sparks when the wrong knob turns.
Step 5 - Remove the failed module
- Disconnect each labeled wire from the module's spade terminals or screw terminals (model-specific).
- Remove the two mounting screws securing the module to the range frame.
- Lift the failed module out.
- Inspect the wiring harness for heat damage near the module - if any insulation is melted or brittle, replace that section before installing the new module. A heat-damaged harness will fail the new module.
Step 6 - Install the new module
- Mount the new module in the same orientation as the original.
- Connect each labeled wire to the matching terminal on the new module.
- Re-verify each connection against your labeled photograph before applying power.
- Connect the ground wire LAST, then visually confirm tightness on every screw or spade terminal.
Step 7 - Restore the cooktop and test
- Lower the cooktop back into position.
- Reinstall the front-edge screws.
- Reinstall burner heads and caps in the original order (the order matters - bake-on residue from previous use can cause mis-seating if heads are swapped).
- Open the gas shutoff valve at the back of the range.
- Restore power.
Step 8 - Functional test sequence
Test each burner in sequence:
- Turn the burner knob to LITE (the spark position).
- Confirm spark at the target burner only - no spark on the other five burners.
- Confirm the burner ignites within 4 seconds of spark start.
- Release the knob to the burner's normal flame position and confirm the spark stops within 1 second of knob release.
- Repeat for all six burners.
Failure modes during this test and what they indicate:
- All six burners spark when one knob is turned: SP outputs are cross-wired or the module is the wrong part number.
- No spark, knob does nothing: SW input from that burner's knob switch is disconnected, or the AC input is not present.
- Spark continues after knob is released: SW input is shorted - the knob switch contacts are stuck, replace the switch.
- Burner lights but spark continues: spark sensor wire is missing or open - confirm the spark electrode's sense wire is connected.
Step 9 - Documentation and warranty
Capture the model and serial number, the failed part number, the installed part number, and the test results in the Manuall job's notes and Attachments. Viking offers a one-year warranty on OEM replacement parts when installed by an authorized service technician - document the install date and customer signature in the Signatures module.
A gas range that fails the spark-stops-when-knob-released test in Step 8 is a fire and gas hazard. Do not leave the appliance in service. If the cause is a stuck knob switch and the replacement switch is not on the truck, disconnect the gas at the shutoff and inform the customer in writing not to use the range until the second visit. Document the customer's acknowledgment in the Signatures module.
