Safety

Some models share a circuit with adjacent appliances; verify the breaker label corresponds to the warming drawer specifically.
The element can reach 400+ °F at setpoint. Allow 30 minutes of cool-down with the drawer open before any internal service.
Procedure - diagnosis
Step 1: Symptom characterization
- Verify the customer's complaint with a real demonstration
- Set the drawer to a typical setpoint (175 °F is common for plate warming)
- Run for 30 minutes
- Measure the actual interior temperature with an IR thermometer or a probe thermometer through a small opening
- Compare reading to setpoint:
- Within 10 °F: normal
- 30+ °F below setpoint: heating performance problem
- Above setpoint: thermostat or control fault
- No temperature rise: element or supply failure
Step 2: Verify power
- Pull the toe-kick or the drawer cover panel as the manufacturer specifies
- Locate the junction box where the appliance connects to house wiring
- Verify 120 V at the input terminals
- No voltage = breaker or wiring issue, not appliance
- Voltage present, control unresponsive = control board or power supply fault
Step 3: Test the heating element
- Disconnect power
- Locate the element terminals at the back of the drawer body (access varies by brand - sometimes pull the drawer fully out and reach behind, sometimes pull from the front)
- Disconnect element leads
- Resistance check across the element terminals
- Element resistance depends on wattage and voltage; verify against manufacturer's spec
- 400 W at 120 V = 36 Ω

- Open circuit = element failed
- Very low resistance = shorted (uncommon but possible after a sub-thermal-fuse failure)
Step 4: Test the thermal fuse

Step 5: Test the thermostat / thermistor
- Mechanical thermostat: continuity at room temp (typically closed contacts when cold)

Step 6: Test the control board
- If element, thermal fuse, and thermostat all check out and the drawer still won't heat, the control board is the suspect

Procedure - repair
Step 1: Pull the drawer
- Open fully
