Washer Leaks Only on Large Loads Decision Tree

Why this matters

A washer that leaks on large loads but not on small or medium loads is a focused mechanical symptom that fingers the door bellows, the tub-to-pump connection, the upper outer-tub seal, or a worn suspension component that allows the basket to contact the cabinet under heavy spin imbalance. Each of those has a different parts list and a different post-repair confirmation. Techs who pressure-test the unit empty find no leak and tell the customer "everything looks fine"; the customer washes a king sheet two days later and the leak returns. The tree below produces the leak on the bench by loading the unit to the volume that fails it, isolates the path, and confirms the repair under the same load condition.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports water on the floor after large loads only. Confirm by asking: which loads trigger it (towels, sheets, comforters, bath mats are top of list), how much water, where on the floor, and whether the leak appears during a specific step (fill, wash, drain, spin). Each step localizes a different leak path.

Confirm with a load test. Bring a 10 lb load (heavy towels in a mesh bag or shop towels) and run a normal cycle on the customer's most common large-load setting. Watch the unit through fill, wash, drain, and spin from the front and from below using a flashlight and a paper towel taped to the floor as a leak indicator.

Quick checks at the door

For front-load: inspect the door bellows (boot) for tears at the lower-front quadrant, where coins and underwires accumulate. The lower-front is the leak hotspot on every front-load platform because gravity concentrates wash water there and abrasion from foreign objects wears the rubber. Pull back the lower seal lip and look for a small tear; this is the most common single cause of large-load leaks.

For front-load: inspect the door-gasket-to-tub joint at the top inside the bellows. Look for sediment trail or rust streak indicating chronic seepage during high-volume fill.

For top-load: inspect the upper outer-tub seal at the tub flange. Hard-water mineral buildup or detergent residue can cause the seal to fail under the elevated water column of a large-load fill. Inspect the tub-to-pump hose at the bottom for leaks at the clamp.

For both platforms: confirm the unit is level. An off-level unit allows asymmetric water distribution that can spill from an otherwise-fine drain or fill connection under large-load conditions.

Isolation tree

Branch A (front-load): door bellows tear at the lower-front. Replace the bellows. This is the single most common large-load leak on front-load platforms more than 3 years old. Replace with OEM bellows; aftermarket bellows on Whirlpool / LG / Samsung platforms have a documented higher failure rate.

Branch B (front-load): tub-to-pump hose leak at the clamp. Tighten or replace the spring clamp. If the hose itself shows a crack, replace the hose. The leak presents only on large loads because the wash-arm overflow into the recirculation loop only fills the hose to leak height on heavy loads.

Branch C (front-load): door lock or door-glass-seal weep. The door glass seal can fail at one corner; the leak presents as a thin trickle on large loads with high agitation. Replace the door glass seal kit (typically includes door bushings and the inner seal).

Branch D (top-load): tub-to-pump hose at the bottom. Same diagnosis as Branch B; tighten or replace.

Branch E (top-load): outer tub seal at the basket-drive shaft. Diagnosed by a leak that appears only during spin (centrifugal force pushes water up and out the worn seal). Replace the tub seal and inspect the drive shaft for wear.

Branch F (top-load): air-bell overflow on impeller-style HE top-loaders. The air-bell pressure-sensor tube is sometimes routed in a way that, when the unit is overfilled by a marginal pressure-switch on a large load, it weeps from the pressure-tube fitting. Replace the pressure-switch and air-bell tube.

Branch G (both platforms): worn suspension allowing basket-to-cabinet contact on heavy spin. Symptom: leak appears only during high-speed spin and only on heavy loads. Confirmed by inspecting the cabinet inside for paint transfer marks from the basket. Replace shocks (front-load) or suspension rods (top-load).

Branch H (front-load): drain pump filter cap not fully seated after a prior service call. Customer cleans the filter, does not seat the cap, leak appears on the next large-load drain. Trivial fix; document.

Confirming the diagnosis

Run a 10 lb test load on the customer's normal large-load cycle after the repair. Place paper towels on the floor at the front, sides, and rear. Run two cycles back-to-back. No paper-towel wetting confirms the leak path is closed.

For Branch A (bellows), run a third cycle with high-RPM spin and confirm no leak; the bellows seal is most stressed during the high-G phases.

For Branch G (suspension), confirm cabinet inside is clean post-repair and run a deliberately unbalanced 12 lb load on a spin cycle to test the new suspension under stress.

Remediation parts list by branch

Branch A: door bellows assembly (OEM).

Branch B / D: tub-to-pump hose, spring clamp.

Branch C: door glass seal kit (door bushings + inner seal).

Branch E: outer tub seal, drive-shaft seal kit.

Branch F: pressure switch, air-bell pressure tube.

Branch G: shock absorbers (pair) or suspension rods.

Branch H: no parts; verify cap seating.

When to escalate

If a front-load bellows is on its second replacement in 24 months without the customer changing pre-load coin-checking behavior, the call is a customer-education conversation. The bellows is consumable under abusive loading conditions and replacing it on a repeat schedule is the wrong economics.

If a top-load outer tub seal call is the third repeat in 36 months on the same unit, suspect a worn basket-drive shaft as the upstream cause. The seal cannot survive on a shaft with shoulder wear; replace the drive assembly or condemn the unit.
