Washing Machine Won't Spin

Symptom

Customer reports the washing machine won't spin OR clothes come out soaking wet after the cycle. The diagnostic separates control / electrical issues from mechanical / belt issues from out-of-balance protection. Different causes = different repair scope.

Likely Causes

In order of frequency:

  • Out-of-balance load detection triggering safety mode - 25 %
  • Door / lid switch failure preventing spin engagement - 20 %
  • Failed drive belt (top-load) OR motor coupling - 15 %
  • Drain pump issue (won't drain → won't spin in modern washers) - 12 %
  • Failed motor - 10 %
  • Failed control board - 8 %
  • Worn drum bearings - 5 %
  • Failed clutch (top-load) - 3 %
  • Other - 2 %

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Verify the door/lid switch. Open + close the door OR lid. Listen for the audible click of the switch engaging. With a multimeter:
  • Open switch (door open): no continuity
  • Closed switch (door closed): continuity
  1. Test the drain function. Modern washers (especially front-loaders) won't spin until they've drained. Verify draining is happening:
  • Listen for drain pump engaging
  • Check that water exits the drain
  • If no drain → drain pump or clog issue (separate Diagnostic + Repair)
  1. For top-loaders, manually rotate the drum:
  • Should spin freely (some resistance OK)
  • Grinding or seized → bearing failure
  1. For front-loaders, listen for the motor running during spin attempt:
  • Motor hums but no spin → belt / coupling failure
  • Motor doesn't engage at all → control board or motor issue
  1. For out-of-balance issues: observe an actual load. The washer should automatically rebalance OR pause. If it gives up early, the balance sensor is too sensitive (board calibration issue).
  2. Test the motor with multimeter (if motor doesn't engage):
  • Coil resistance check (specific to motor)
  • Open circuit → motor failed
  • Continuous → other issue (capacitor, control board, wiring)

Resolution

  • Out-of-balance: customer education (don't overload, distribute clothes evenly). Sometimes the customer's washer is on uneven floor; level the feet.
  • Drain issue: see drain-pump replacement (or repair scope per finding).
  • Failed motor: replace.
  • Failed control board: replace. Often the most expensive single component.
  • Worn bearings: very expensive repair on most washers. For washers > 7 years old, replacement washer often makes more economic sense.
  • Failed clutch (top-load): replace.

Verification

  • Washer completes a normal cycle including spin
  • Clothes come out at normal moisture level (not soaking wet)
  • No unusual noise during spin

When estimating washer repairs, compare to replacement cost. A repair on a 10-year-old washer is rarely the right answer - energy-efficient new washers often save the customer their repair cost in 2 - 3 years of utility bills. Quote the repair + the replacement at the same time; let the customer decide.
