Air Mover Placement for Carpet Drying

Why this matters

Long dry times are the leading customer complaint after carpet cleaning. Carpet that takes 12+ hours to dry develops musty odor, allows mildew growth in the pad, and ruins the customer's evening. Air mover placement during and after cleaning reduces dry time from 8-12 hours to 2-4 hours and is the single most cost-effective customer-satisfaction investment a cleaning service can make. This article covers the placement principles and the procedure.

When to use this procedure

  • Every wet-cleaning residential visit
  • Water-damage restoration jobs (mandatory; the dry time directly affects insurance claim outcome)
  • Hot water extraction on dense or thick carpets
  • High-humidity weather conditions
  • Customer-occupied properties where dry time matters

For low-moisture cleaning methods (encapsulation, bonnet) air movers are less critical because the carpet starts much drier.

Tools and materials

  • Air movers - typical residential cleaning operation needs 3-6 units. Common types:
    • Centrifugal (snail-style): high airflow, low velocity. Best general-purpose
    • Axial (drum-style): high velocity, focused flow. Best for drying specific spots
    • Low-profile (bird-style): fit under furniture. Specialty
  • Extension cords if needed
  • Power strip (only if you've verified the circuit can handle the load)

Safety

A typical air mover draws 2-4 amps. Three air movers on a 15-amp residential circuit is fine; four or more may trip the breaker. Plug into separate circuits, especially in older homes. Don't run air movers in series on a power strip - that's an electrical fire risk.

Verify the customer's electrical layout before deploying multiple air movers. In residential homes, the bedroom circuits are typically separate from living room circuits - distribute units across circuits.

Placement principles

The basic physics: moisture evaporates from the carpet surface into the air. The air-mover's job is to replace the moisture-saturated boundary layer above the carpet with drier room air. Three variables matter:

  1. Velocity - air moving fast across the surface lifts moisture faster
  2. Volume - total volume of dry air being introduced
  3. Direction - air should sweep across the surface, not bounce off

Placement procedure - residential cleaning

Step 1: Plan the placement

Before plugging in:

  1. Identify the wet area boundaries
  2. Identify the room's longest dimension
  3. Identify the door / opening where humid air can exit
  4. Note any HVAC return air vents - air movers can blow toward returns to extract humid air from the room
  5. Note any furniture / obstructions that block airflow

Step 2: Position the units

For a typical residential room (12x12 to 15x20):

  1. Place one centrifugal air mover at a 45° angle to the wall, pointed across the wet carpet
  2. The unit should be 8-12 feet from the opposite wall
  3. Direction: aim the airflow to follow the longest dimension of the wet area
  4. The air should sweep across the surface and exit through the doorway or be drawn into the return

For larger rooms (over 15x20):

  1. Two air movers
  2. Place at opposite corners, angled to create a circular airflow pattern
  3. OR place both pointed in the same direction at staggered distances

For long, narrow areas (hallways):

  1. One air mover at one end, blowing the length of the hallway
  2. Or two units at opposite ends if the hallway is over 25 feet

Step 3: Verify airflow at the carpet surface

  1. Stand 1 inch above the carpet at the far end from the air mover
  2. Feel for the airflow - it should be noticeable, not gusty
  3. If you can't feel the airflow, the unit is positioned too far away or aimed wrong

Step 4: Open doorways and ventilation paths

  1. Open the door to the wet room
  2. If practical, open windows in adjacent rooms to allow air circulation
  3. The humid air must have somewhere to go; otherwise it just recirculates
  4. Avoid blowing moist air into rooms with electronics or wood furniture that would absorb the moisture

Step 5: Consider the HVAC

If the customer is willing to run the HVAC:

  1. AC mode pulls humidity from the air - fastest dry
  2. Heat mode warms the room - also helps but less effective
  3. Fan-only mode without conditioning - limited help
  4. Recommend the customer set the thermostat for active conditioning during the dry period

Step 6: Document the placement

  1. Photograph the air mover setup
  2. Note the start time
  3. Inform the customer when to expect dry (typically 2-4 hours with proper air mover placement)
  4. Inform the customer of the routing - what to avoid stepping on, what to leave alone

Placement procedure - restoration / water damage

Restoration drying is a different scope. Multiple air movers and dehumidifiers operate continuously for 48-72+ hours. Specific placement principles:

  1. One air mover per 12-15 linear feet of wet wall
  2. Air movers create circular airflow pattern in the room
  3. Dehumidifier (commercial-grade) removes moisture from the air
  4. Moisture meter readings determine when to stop drying
  5. Documentation per the IICRC S500 standard (water-damage restoration)

This is a specialty service. The procedure here is the residential-cleaning context, not restoration.

How long to run

For residential cleaning:

  • Centrifugal air mover on typical wet carpet: 2-4 hours to substantial dry
  • Add 30-60 minutes for thick or wool carpets
  • Add 30-60 minutes for high-humidity weather
  • For complete dry, plan 6-12 hours; the technician leaves the air movers running and the customer monitors

The customer can turn off the air movers when:

  • The carpet feels dry to the touch
  • No moist feeling underfoot when walking barefoot
  • The pad feels dry when pressed firmly

Customers who turn off the air movers too soon often experience the mildew odor that started this whole process - leave the units running.

Special situations

Tile floor near wet carpet:

  • Air movers blow wet carpet moisture onto adjacent tile
  • Place a barrier (towel) or angle the unit away from the tile
  • Mop up any condensation on tile before leaving

Wood floors near wet carpet:

  • Wood absorbs ambient moisture; long-term exposure can warp planks
  • Don't blow wet-carpet moisture toward wood floors
  • Open windows or run dehumidifiers to remove moisture from the air

High-humidity weather (summer thunderstorm areas, coastal):

  • Standard placement may not be enough
  • Add a dehumidifier
  • Run HVAC AC during the dry period
  • Expect 1.5-2x normal dry time
