Customer Says Spot Came Back But It Looks Different Wick vs New Translation Decision Tree
Why this matters
A callback where the customer says "the spot came back" is one of three different problems wearing the same complaint, and the wrong fix on the wrong one burns a return trip and your credibility. If it wicked, the contaminant is still in the pad and you re-extract. If it is residue resoiling, you over-applied detergent and you rinse. If it is a genuinely new spill, no amount of reprocessing your work fixes it. The tell is in how the returned spot differs from the original - position, shape, color, and timing. This tree translates the customer's "it looks different" into a specific cause so the second visit closes the ticket.
Symptom presentation
The customer reports a spot reappeared after the carpet dried, usually within one to fourteen days. Have them (or you) compare against your job photos:
- Same footprint, fuzzy/halo edges, lighter than original - classic wicking.
- Larger, darker, sharper than original, with a sticky feel - residue resoiling.
- Different location, different color, fresh edges - new spill.
- A ring around where you treated - residue ring or wick-back at the cleaned perimeter.
Quick checks
- Compare to pre-clean photos - position and size relative to the original is the master clue.
- Touch test - drag a clean white cotton cloth; sticky/tacky transfer points to residue.
- Moisture meter on the pad - residual subsurface moisture supports wicking.
- pH strip on a damp swab of the spot - alkaline residue reads high (8 to 10+).
- Timing - wicking shows during/just after drying; resoiling builds over days; new spills are abrupt.
Run these as a set, not in isolation. The single most decisive pairing is the photo overlay plus the white-cloth drag: footprint geometry separates wicking and new spills, and the cloth transfer separates residue from everything else. The moisture meter and pH strip then confirm. A spot that returns within hours of drying with no sticky transfer is almost always wicking; a spot that takes a week to reappear and feels tacky is almost always residue.
Isolation tree
Branch A - Same spot, lighter, fuzzy halo, appeared as it dried. This is wicking. The original contaminant penetrated to the backing or pad; as water evaporated upward it carried the dissolved soil back to the tips. The returned spot is lighter because only a fraction migrated. Confirm with the moisture meter (elevated subsurface) and the photo overlay (footprint matches).
Branch B - Same area but bigger/darker, sticky to the touch, built up over days. This is residue resoiling, not the old stain. Leftover detergent or a high-pH prespray that was not rinsed stays tacky and grabs airborne and foot-tracked soil, so the area gets dirty faster than the rest of the carpet. Confirm with the white-cloth drag (transfer) and a pH strip reading high.
Branch C - Different location, different color, crisp edges, no halo. This is a new spill unrelated to your work. The customer is pattern-matching ("a spot, again") but the evidence - new position, color that does not match the original, sharp edges - says fresh. Treat as a standard spot, not a callback defect.
Branch D - A ring at the perimeter of where you spot-treated. Edge wick-back: you treated the center, the contaminant at the margins wicked up as a ring. Sub-case of wicking; same remediation but feather the treatment wider.
A practical refinement on Branch A vs Branch B: wicking lightens over successive dries (each evaporation cycle pulls less to the surface), so a returned spot that is fainter than your last sight of it is trending toward resolution. Residue resoiling does the opposite - it darkens with time because the tacky film keeps accumulating soil. Ask the customer whether it is getting lighter or darker week over week; the trend direction alone often settles the branch.
Confirming diagnosis
- Wicking confirmed: footprint overlay matches, moisture meter elevated, no sticky transfer, pH near neutral.
- Residue confirmed: sticky transfer on the cloth, high pH, area larger and resoiling over time.
- New spill confirmed: new geography, mismatched color, no subsurface moisture, no residue chemistry. Document which test fired so the file shows why the second visit was scoped the way it was.
Remediation
- Wicking: re-extract with minimal moisture, then apply a folded white-towel weighted-stack overnight or a fan/airmover to drive remaining migration into the towel, not the tips. Use a spotter, not flood. Consider an absorbent-pad method for deep contaminants.
- Residue resoiling: thorough acid-rinse (or clear-water rinse to neutral) to strip the tacky detergent, then verify pH returns to 6 to 8 and the white-cloth drag comes back clean. Coach lighter prespray dilution next time.
- New spill: identify the substance and treat per its chemistry (tannin/protein/dye/oil); this is fresh work, not rework.
