Furniture Mark Removal from Carpet
Goal
Remove the dents + pile-crushing left by furniture legs on carpet - both during routine cleaning AND when furniture is moved during renovation. Customers notice these dents immediately + often think the carpet is "ruined." Most marks can be substantially recovered with technique.
Prerequisites
- Steam iron (with steam) OR hot wet cloth
- Soft brush OR carpet rake
- White towel OR cloth
- Ice cubes (for stubborn dents)
- 5 - 15 minutes per mark
Steps
- Identify the mark type:
- Fresh furniture dent (recently moved): pile crushed but no fiber damage
- Old furniture dent (weeks/months): pile compressed; fibers may have memory-set
- Burn mark from heated furniture leg: fiber damage - different repair, not removal
- For fresh dents:
- Place an ice cube directly on the dent. Allow to melt completely (~30 min).
- As ice melts, the water saturates the crushed fibers + they expand back up.
- After melting, blot up excess water with white towel.
- Brush gently to lift fibers.
- For older or stubborn dents:
- Wet the area lightly with warm water
- Place a white towel over the wet area
- Iron over the towel with steam iron on medium heat - moving constantly, never holding in one spot
- Steam from below + heat from above expands the fibers
- Lift towel + brush fibers up
- For deep marks where dent persists:
- Repeat the iron + steam process
- May need multiple cycles
- Some marks won't fully recover (older, very deep) - set customer expectations
- Brush + groom fibers to lift them to normal pile height.
- Vacuum carefully to lift pile + remove any debris.
Verification
- Mark visibly reduced or gone
- Surrounding carpet unaffected
- No water marks or browning
- Customer sees the result before signing off
Troubleshooting
- Mark persists after multiple iron attempts: fibers are likely set permanently. Customer expectation reset; full recovery not possible.
- Water marks appear from over-wetting: too much water used. Allow to dry completely; mark usually fades.
- Fabric ring or browning around treated area: too hot iron OR over-wet. Apply mild acid solution (white vinegar + water) to neutralize.
- Burn marks: actual fiber damage. Cannot remove; requires patching (cut burn area + insert clean carpet patch from a closet remnant).
A STEAM IRON in DIRECT CONTACT with carpet will MELT synthetic fibers. ALWAYS use a damp towel between the iron and the carpet. Even with a towel, never leave the iron in one spot - keep it moving. The "I'll just leave it there for 30 seconds" mistake creates a melted permanent mark.
