Why this matters
The thin dark line that follows the perimeter of a room, under doors, or along the base of walls is filtration soiling, and customers routinely blame the cleaner who "missed the edges." It is not a cleaning failure - it is fine airborne particulate filtering through the carpet at the points where air passes through, leaving carbon-black deposits set in the fiber. But "filtration" has two distinct air paths: air pulled through the carpet edge from inside the room (HVAC pressure, window/door gaps) versus air drawn up through gaps in the subfloor (basement, crawlspace, slab edge). The source determines whether you can fully clear it and what the customer must change to keep it from coming back. This tree separates the two.
Symptom presentation
A sharp, well-defined gray-to-black line:
- Along walls (especially exterior walls) at the carpet edge.
- Under closed interior doors as a dark band.
- Around the perimeter of area rugs or where carpet meets tack strip.
- On stair risers and at the nose of treads.
The deposit is fine, evenly distributed, and bonded to the fiber - not a spill, not traffic soil.
Quick checks
- Map the lines - exterior walls vs. interior walls vs. door bottoms vs. stair edges.
- Pressure cues - is there forced-air HVAC? Are returns undersized so the house runs positive/negative? Fireplace, candles, smoking?
- Below-floor inspection - basement/crawlspace below the affected edges; check for gaps at the subfloor perimeter and around penetrations.
- Window/door drafts - hand-feel for infiltration at the gap line.
- Color/oiliness - candle/cooking soot is oilier; combustion/traffic carbon is drier.

Branch A - Lines on interior walls, under doors, around rugs, on stairs - inside-air path. This is HVAC/room-air filtration. Conditioned air moves under the door gap or toward returns and through the dense carpet edge, depositing whatever is airborne - candle soot, cooking grease, fireplace particulate, cigarette smoke. The carpet edge acts as the filter. Confirm: lines track the airflow geometry (door gaps, return locations), not the building exterior, and the home has identifiable particulate sources.
Branch B - Lines on exterior walls only, strongest near the foundation/slab edge, worst over a basement or crawlspace. This is subfloor / building-envelope filtration. Air infiltrates through gaps where the subfloor meets the wall, around the slab perimeter, or up through unsealed crawlspace penetrations; the carpet edge filters that incoming air. Confirm: below-floor gaps present, lines correlate with exterior walls and below-grade space, often worse with stack-effect pressure in cold weather.
Branch C - Both patterns present. Mixed source - common in older homes. Both an indoor particulate load and a leaky envelope. Treat both paths.
A field shortcut for the two main branches: stand in the room and ask where the air wants to move. If the lines live at door undercuts, returns, and around rugs - places where room air is forced through a dense edge on its way somewhere - the source is inside the conditioned space. If the lines hug only the exterior walls and intensify over a basement or crawlspace, the air is coming from outside or below, and the carpet edge is filtering infiltration. A line on an interior partition wall with no door nearby points to a return-air path drawing through that wall cavity. Reading the geometry against the airflow logic separates the two faster than any instrument.
Confirming diagnosis
- HVAC/room-air confirmed: lines at interior doors, returns, and rug perimeters; identifiable indoor soot sources; below-floor inspection clean.
- Subfloor confirmed: lines confined to exterior/below-grade edges; visible subfloor or slab-edge gaps; stack-effect timing.
- The deposit itself confirms filtration in both cases: fine, bonded, follows an air seam, not a spill or wear pattern.
Remediation
Filtration soiling is among the hardest deposits to fully remove because it is set deep in the fiber, often into the dyesite.
- Cleaning: apply a high-pH/oxidizing filtration-line product with adequate dwell, agitate the edge directly with a hand brush or edging tool, then hot-water-extract along the line. Multiple passes are normal. Set realistic expectations - significant improvement is achievable; 100 percent removal often is not on long-set lines.
- HVAC/room-air source: have the customer reduce particulate (candles, smoking), improve filtration (better HVAC filters), and balance returns; sealing the door undercut is not practical, so source reduction is the durable fix.
- Subfloor source: the recurring fix lives in the building envelope - seal the subfloor perimeter and crawlspace/slab-edge gaps so air stops drawing through the carpet edge. Without sealing, the line returns regardless of how well you clean.
- Tell the customer, in writing, that filtration recurs unless the air path is addressed - this is the line that prevents the callback being charged to you.
