Pet Stain Bleeds Back After Extraction Decision Tree
Why this matters
The customer paid for pet treatment, you extracted the spot clean and damp, and twenty-four hours later they sent you a photo of a yellow ring that is darker and wider than what they showed you at the door. That is a wicking failure on a contaminated substrate, and the recovery path depends on whether the contamination is in the face yarn, the cushion, or the subfloor. Getting this wrong puts you back on site for free three times before the customer files a chargeback. IICRC S100-2023 and IICRC S500-2021 both treat urine-saturated cushion as a Category 3 contamination scenario when it reaches the substrate, which has implications for how you scope, price, and document the second visit.
Symptom presentation
There are four bleed-back patterns to recognize. First, a sharp yellow ring forming around the perimeter of the original wet area as it dries (classic capillary wicking). Second, a diffuse yellow halo with no sharp edge that grows over hours (volatile residue migrating up the fiber). Third, a brown or orange tannin-shaped stain that appears in a spot you did not treat (cellulosic browning from over-wetting jute backing). Fourth, a returning odor without visible discoloration (substrate contamination dried in place). Pattern one is the most common and the easiest to fix; pattern three is the costliest because it indicates you over-wet a natural-fiber backing.
Quick checks at the door
Use a UV black light in a dimmed room and map the actual saturation footprint. Old urine fluoresces yellow-green; what the customer pointed at on visit one was the visible stain, but the actual contamination is often two to four times larger. Probe the carpet, cushion, and subfloor with a pin-style moisture meter at three points: the visible stain center, six inches out, and twelve inches out. Tip-only moisture with a dry cushion suggests face-yarn contamination only. Wet cushion with a dry subfloor suggests cushion soak. Wet subfloor with concrete shows subfloor contamination, which carries odor risk for years even after the carpet is replaced. Confirm the cushion type (prime urethane, rebond, rubber slab) because urethane absorbs and retains urine differently than rebond.
Isolation tree
Branch A face-yarn only: stain is shallow, no cushion saturation, no odor below the carpet. Treatment is repeat extraction with a pet-formulated enzymatic at correct dwell, acid rinse to set the dye, and weighted dry. Branch B cushion-saturated: meter shows wet cushion under a dry tip. Sub-surface extraction tool (water-claw style) is required; surface wand will not pull cushion fluid and surface wand alone causes the wicking the customer just photographed. Branch C subfloor contamination: meter shows wet substrate, UV shows widespread fluorescence, odor is present at the floor seam. The carpet must be detached, cushion replaced in the contaminated zone, subfloor cleaned and sealed (block primer or shellac-based equivalent), new cushion installed, carpet re-stretched. This is no longer a cleaning job; price it as a partial restoration. Branch D cellulosic browning: jute backing or jute-bound wool over-wet during the first cleaning. Treatment is a browning treatment (oxalic or proprietary anti-browning) followed by re-extraction with controlled moisture.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirm face-yarn only when a sub-surface extraction tool pulls clear water on the first pass at center. Confirm cushion saturation when the same tool pulls visibly yellow water from the center after the carpet has been extracted. Confirm subfloor contamination when you detach a corner, look at the cushion underside, and see staining transferred to the slab; odor at the floor reveals subfloor involvement even without visible transfer. Confirm cellulosic browning when the discoloration is brown, not yellow, and the affected fiber tested under a burn ID test shows natural-fiber content (jute, wool, sisal). For the smell-but-no-stain case, an air sample at floor level with no fluorescence above the carpet but strong fluorescence in the cushion confirms substrate contamination.
Remediation
Face-yarn only: enzymatic dwell 10 minutes, hot-water extract with a low-pH rinse, dry to under 12 percent moisture content in 4 hours with weighted towel and air mover. Cushion-saturated: deploy sub-surface extraction tool (target 200 inches of water vacuum minimum), pre-treat with enzyme injected through the carpet into the cushion at 6 inch grid, dwell 30 minutes, extract to clear recovery, replace any cushion zone where extraction recovery remains yellow after two passes. Subfloor contamination: detach in zone, replace cushion, scrub slab with enzymatic, allow to dry, seal slab with a urine-blocking primer (consult product TDS for cure time), reinstall fresh cushion, re-stretch carpet. Document and bill as Category 3 remediation per S500. Cellulosic browning: spray a browning treatment at labeled dilution, extract with controlled moisture, dry within 4 hours, and educate the customer that natural fibers require shorter dwells and more aggressive drying.
A wand pass over a urine spot that has reached the cushion will pull cushion fluid up into the face yarn and create a visible bleed-back ring within 24 hours. Always meter the cushion before deciding which tool to deploy. If the meter shows cushion wet, do not start with the wand.
