Recurring Traffic Lane Soiling Decision Tree
Why this matters
A customer who called you back at 90 days because traffic lanes "look the same as before we cleaned" is one of the most common callback drivers in the trade, and almost every one of those calls is either a residue problem, a wear problem, or a soil-load problem that was misdiagnosed as "the carpet needs cleaning again." Misreading the cause produces three bad outcomes in sequence: you clean it again at no charge, the lane reappears two months later, and the customer cancels the standing job. IICRC S100-2023 calls traffic-lane appearance loss out as a separable defect family from general soiling because the remediation paths diverge. This tree walks the on-site presentation back to one of five root causes so the tech in the doorway picks the right pre-spray, the right agitation, and the right post-treatment on the first revisit.
Symptom presentation
Distinguish four common presentations before you touch the wand. First, a dark gray cast running the natural walk path from entry door to kitchen or sofa, with the rest of the room visually unchanged. Second, a yellow-brown cast that follows the same path but does not extend into low-traffic margins. Third, an apparent "shadow" lane that disappears when you mist the area with plain water and reappears within twenty minutes. Fourth, a lane that has crushed, matted, or untwisted pile under raking light without color change. Each one points to a different root cause and the treatment for one will not move the others.
Quick checks at the door
Walk the lane with a strong inspection light at thirty degrees off the floor and watch for visible specular change as you cross the lane boundary. A boundary that is sharp and color-based usually points to residue or wicking, while a boundary that is fuzzy and only visible under raking light usually points to mechanical wear (pile reversal, untwist, fiber abrasion). Ask the customer the date of the last cleaning, what was used in the meantime (over-the-counter aerosol spotters, rental machines, retail powder deodorizers), whether anyone moved a sofa or rug since the cleaning, and what footwear policy the household runs. If the last visit was prespray-only HWE with no rinse pass, residue is the leading hypothesis until ruled out.
Isolation tree
Branch A residue: dampen a 6 by 6 inch test patch in the middle of the lane with neutralizing rinse at the labeled dilution, dwell 90 seconds, blot with a clean white terry, and examine the towel. Visible brown or yellow lift with no soil present in the surrounding pile indicates surfactant residue that re-wets to attract soil; this is the most common cause when the cleaning system on file used a high-pH prespray with no acid rinse. Branch B wicking: same test patch, but extract aggressively with a wand and run an airmover for thirty minutes. If the lane lightens dramatically while wet then darkens as it dries, residue from a deep-cushion soil or a prior spot treatment is migrating to the tip. Branch C mechanical wear: examine individual yarns under a 10x loupe; if tips are split, untwisted, or abraded, no cleaning method will restore appearance and the customer needs an honest wear-vs-soil conversation. Branch D soil load: check entry mats, hard-floor transitions, and HVAC return filtration. Inadequate walk-off, dirty return air, or a missing entry mat re-loads the lane within weeks regardless of cleaning quality. Branch E pile reversal (shading): if the appearance change reverses when you brush against the natural lay direction, this is optical and permanent on cut pile (especially Saxony).
Confirming diagnosis
Residue is confirmed by the towel test plus a pH paper reading on the lane greater than 8.5 against a baseline lane reading near 7. Wicking is confirmed when post-extraction drying brings the lane back darker within 60 minutes and a sub-surface extraction tool pulls visible soil-laden water from the cushion. Mechanical wear is confirmed by loupe inspection plus comparing manufacturer spec sheet pile height to current crushed height; if the deficit exceeds 30 percent the carpet has failed appearance-retention warranty timing regardless of your work. Soil reload is confirmed by ATP-style soil tests at the lane vs. the margin showing a delta consistent with months of foot traffic in weeks. Pile reversal is confirmed when the lane disappears under directional brushing and reappears when the pile relaxes.
Remediation
For residue, run an acid rinse pass at the manufacturer dilution (target pH 4.5 to 5.5 in the recovery tank) with two slow dry-stroke passes per wet stroke, dwell time minimum 5 minutes between passes, and a final water-only pass to confirm recovery clarity. Document the recovery tank color shift in the file. For wicking, set up a hot-water extraction with sub-surface extraction tool, weight-down the lane during dry to break the capillary path, and schedule a 24-hour follow-up walkthrough; if it returns again, the cushion is the source and replacement is the only durable fix. For mechanical wear, do not re-clean; provide the customer a written appearance-retention assessment with photos, fiber identification, and a referral to the carpet manufacturer warranty process. For soil reload, install an 8 foot minimum walk-off entry mat, recommend filtration upgrade, and offer a maintenance interval shortened to 90 days with interim encapsulation. For pile reversal, educate the customer in writing that shading is an optical effect inherent to cut-pile construction and is not a cleaning defect.
Re-cleaning a residue-driven lane with the same high-pH prespray that caused the residue makes the problem worse. The lane will look better wet, then return darker within 48 hours, and you will be on the hook for a third visit. Confirm residue with the towel test before you wet the carpet.
