Creosote Stage 1 vs 2 vs 3 Cleaning Method Decision Tree
Why this matters
Creosote is not one substance, and choosing the wrong removal method for the stage you are looking at either leaves a chimney fire hazard in place or damages the flue trying to remove material that requires a chemical pretreatment first. Stage 1 (soot) is brush work, stage 2 (flaky tar) is rotary or aggressive brush work, stage 3 (glaze) is a chemical conversion job followed by mechanical removal and may require relining if the substrate is degraded. A sweep who runs a rotary chain whip into stage 3 glaze without pretreatment ends up with damaged flue tiles, scratched stainless liner, and creosote still on the wall. This tree routes the cleaning method to the stage, ordered by what you find with the inspection light and what a Wagner moisture meter or scrape test confirms.
Identifying the stage from the chimney top
Stage 1 - sooty: black powdery deposit, brushes off easily. Coats the flue evenly. Found on chimneys serving appliances burning at proper temperatures with dry wood. Routine annual sweep removes it with poly brush or wire brush sized to the flue.
Stage 2 - flaky tar: shiny black flakes, hard, brittle, comes off in chunks when struck. Often layered up to 1/4 inch thick or more. Forms when flue temperatures drop low enough for creosote vapor to condense and harden but not low enough for it to glaze. Common with smoldering fires, oversized appliances, or wet wood. Mechanical removal with rotary brush or chain whip required.
Stage 3 - glaze: smooth, shiny, hard like glass, deep black with a tar-like appearance. Does not flake; it is fused to the substrate. Forms during sustained smoldering with very wet wood (over 30% moisture). Highly combustible - a stage 3 glaze chimney fire reaches 2,000+ F and can burn through clay tile and warp stainless liners. Cannot be removed with brush alone. Requires chemical pretreatment + mechanical removal + often re-inspection for substrate damage.
Quick checks at the firebox before climbing
Look at the smoke shelf and the bottom of the flue with a flashlight. The condition at the firebox is usually the same general stage as the rest of the flue, sometimes worse at the smoke shelf where deposits accumulate, sometimes worse mid-flue where temperatures drop.
Scrape test: a screwdriver or chimney scraper into the deposit. Powder that sweeps away: stage 1. Hard flakes that chip off: stage 2. Shiny black surface that the scraper skids across without removing material: stage 3.
If the customer reports a recent chimney fire (popping, roaring sound, flames or sparks visible from the top): there may be no creosote visible because it all just burned. But the substrate (clay tile, mortar joints, stainless liner) is likely damaged. Camera inspection per CSIA Level 2 is mandatory before the next use.
Path 1: stage 1 sooty cleaning
Method: top-down sweep with a poly bristle brush sized to the flue (8x8 tile = 8x8 brush, 6-inch stainless liner = 6-inch round brush). Wire bristles for masonry flue tile, poly only for stainless liner (wire scratches stainless).
Procedure: cover the firebox with a poly sheet sealed at the perimeter with painter's tape, run a HEPA-filtered vacuum (CSIA recommends HEPA per OSHA respirable particulate exposure limits) drawing through the firebox. Brush from the top with sectional rods, full length, 3-5 passes minimum. Final pass with stiff-bristle brush against the smoke shelf and damper.
Vacuum the firebox, smoke chamber, smoke shelf, and any cleanout. Bag and dispose of debris per local solid waste regulations.
Time on a 30-foot single flue: 45-90 minutes including setup, cleanup, and inspection report.
Path 2: stage 2 flaky tar cleaning
Method: rotary brush on a sectional rod system driven by a 12V cordless drill (Schaefer Brush, Sooteater, ProRotary) OR chain whip rotary if the flue is heavily encrusted. Speed limited to about 750 RPM to avoid throwing debris violently. Bristle type matched to substrate: poly for stainless, nylon or wire for clay tile.
Procedure: same containment setup as stage 1, plus secondary containment because the flake is going to come down in chunks. HEPA vacuum running. Start at the top with the rotary head, work down slowly with rotation speed and travel rate adjusted to take 1/16 to 1/8 inch per pass without skipping. Inspect the substrate frequently with the camera; tile damage or liner scoring means stop.
A second pass with poly brush after rotary work knocks down any loose material the rotary did not collect.
Time on a 30-foot flue: 2-3.5 hours.
If the substrate looks damaged - clay tile spalled, mortar joints washed out, stainless scored deeply - move from cleaning to a relining quote. The customer needs to know now, not after a chimney fire.
Path 3: stage 3 glaze cleaning
Method: this is a two-stage chemical-then-mechanical job. Mechanical-only attempts on heavy glaze either fail or damage the flue. The CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep credential includes specific training on this; the supplementary CSIA C-DAT (Dryer Exhaust Technician) and other specialty credentials do not. If you are not trained on chemical creosote removal, sub it to a sweep who is or refer the customer.
Chemical pretreatment options:
ACS (Anti-Creosote Spray) by ChimneySaver or SaverSystems PoultryCreo (also marketed as PCR or Poultice Creosote Remover): a chemical that breaks the chemical bond of the glaze to the substrate. Apply per manufacturer to the glazed surface, allow dwell time per the product (4-72 hours typically). The glaze becomes flaky and removable.
Cre-Away by Rutland: granular product applied to a hot fire that the customer burns under instruction over multiple fires across 1-2 weeks. Converts glaze to brushable deposits. Customer participation required; slower but legitimate.
Mechanical follow-up: rotary brush with wire (on masonry tile) or poly (on stainless) after the chemical has done its work. Heavy glaze often requires 2-3 rounds of chemical-then-brush before the substrate is exposed.
After removal: camera inspection per CSIA Level 2 minimum, Level 3 if the substrate is damaged. Stage 3 glaze is itself evidence of conditions that caused substrate degradation, and approximately 30-50% of stage 3 cleanings reveal flue defects requiring relining before the customer should burn again.
