Stainless Steel Care

Goal

Clean + polish stainless steel appliances without streaks, water spots, or scratches. Stainless is the dominant kitchen appliance finish; getting it right gets customers calling repeatedly. Getting it wrong (scratches from scouring pads, hazing from wrong cleaners) generates customer disputes.

Prerequisites

• Microfiber cloth (multiple - clean, dry, wet)
• Mild dish soap + water OR commercial stainless steel cleaner
• Stainless steel polish (Bar Keepers Friend, Weiman Stainless Steel Polish, or similar)
• 5 - 15 minutes per appliance

Steps

1. Identify the grain direction. Stainless has a directional polish - like wood grain. Stand back; look at the surface in good light. Streaks of light indicate which way the grain runs (typically horizontal on appliance fronts).
2. Pre-clean. Wipe down the surface with a clean damp microfiber to remove loose food + dust. Don't drag debris around with cleaner; remove it first.
3. Apply cleaner. Spray cleaner onto the MICROFIBER, not the surface. Reduces overspray + product waste.
4. Wipe IN THE DIRECTION OF THE GRAIN. Always with the grain, never across. Cross-grain wiping leaves visible streaks even with the right cleaner.
5. Multiple passes with progressively-cleaner sides of the microfiber. The first pass picks up grease; second pass picks up cleaner residue; third pass dries.
6. Apply polish (optional but high-impact). Stainless polish is an oil-based finishing product that adds shine + hides minor scratches. Apply lightly with a clean microfiber, again in the direction of the grain.
7. Buff with a dry clean microfiber. Light pressure, with the grain, until any haze is removed.

Verification

• No streaks visible from any angle in good light
• Surface has uniform sheen
• Grain direction preserved (still visible after cleaning)
• No water spots
• Customer can see their reflection in the surface (the polished test)

Troubleshooting

• Streaks remain after cleaning: cleaner residue. Re-wipe with damp microfiber (water only), then dry.
• Hazy spots: wrong cleaner OR polish applied with too much product. Wipe with damp microfiber to remove polish; reapply lightly.
• Visible scratches: stainless polish can hide minor scratches; deep scratches require professional refinishing or replacement of the panel.
• Water spots that won't go away: hard water mineral deposits. Use a stainless-steel-safe descaler (Bar Keepers Friend is gentle enough); rinse + dry immediately.
• Discoloration / rust spots: typically iron contamination from steel wool or carbon-steel knives left on the surface. Bar Keepers Friend on a damp microfiber, gently with the grain.
