Residential Flatwork Pour

Why this matters

Residential flatwork (driveways, sidewalks, patios, garage slabs) is the bread-and-butter of residential concrete. A standard 4 inch slab properly poured, finished, and cured lasts 30 to 60 years. A poorly executed pour produces cracking, surface failure, and a customer who wants the money back. The skill is in the prep (compacted base, proper grade, reinforcement), the pour (timing, finishing), and the cure (moisture control). A contractor who does these consistently produces work that holds up; one who shortcuts any phase produces failures that come back to haunt them years later.

Pre-pour preparation

Step 1: Plan and quote

  • Measure the area
  • Determine thickness (4 inch typical residential)
  • Determine reinforcement (rebar, wire mesh, fiber)
  • Determine drainage
  • Identify utilities below
  • Verify permits if needed

Step 2: Site preparation

  • Excavate to grade
  • Compact subgrade (mechanical tamper or roller)
  • Add aggregate base (typically 4 to 6 inch of compacted crushed stone)
  • Compact aggregate base
  • Verify grade for drainage (typically 1/4 inch per ft slope away from house)

Step 3: Form the area

  • Install perimeter forms (2x4 or 2x6 typical for 4 inch slab)
  • Stake forms securely
  • Verify forms are level (or correctly sloped)
  • Add isolation joints where slab meets other structures (foundation, walkway)

Step 4: Install reinforcement

For typical residential slab:

  • Welded wire mesh (6x6 inch x 6/6 gauge typical) OR
  • Rebar grid (typically #3 or #4 rebar at 12 to 18 inch spacing) OR
  • Fiber reinforcement (mixed into concrete; no separate reinforcement needed)

Position reinforcement at middle of slab thickness (typically supported on dobie blocks or chairs).

Step 5: Set joint locations

Plan control joints (induced cracks) before the pour:

  • Tooled or sawed after the pour

  • Plan now to ensure proper layout

The pour

Step 6: Coordinate with concrete supplier

  • Verify mix design (typical 4,000 psi residential)
  • Verify delivery time
  • Plan pour direction
  • Plan number of trucks if large pour

Step 7: Pre-pour readiness

Before truck arrives:

  • All tools ready (rakes, screeds, floats)
  • Crew briefed
  • Mud puddle pumped or wet area drained
  • Weather check (avoid extreme heat or freezing)

Step 8: Place the concrete

  • Place near the form
  • Spread with rakes or shovels
  • Don't pull (drags fines)
  • Distribute uniformly
  • Vibrate if specified (typically needed for stronger structural work; less for typical residential flat)

Step 9: Screed

  • Use a straight 2x4 or aluminum screed
  • Rest on the forms
  • Move across the slab in saw-like motion
  • Levels the surface

Step 10: Bull float

  • After screeding, bull float (large flat tool on a long handle)
  • Smooths the surface
  • Removes ridges and depressions

Step 11: Wait for bleed water

  • Concrete releases water to the surface
  • Wait for the surface to dry slightly (typically 15 to 30 minutes)
  • Don't work the surface while bleed water is present

Step 12: Edge

  • Round the perimeter with an edging tool
  • Creates a clean, finished edge that resists chipping

Step 13: Control joint installation

Two methods:

Tool joints

  • Use a grooving tool to create joints
  • Joints should be 1/4 of slab depth (1 inch for 4 inch slab)

Sawed joints

  • Allow concrete to set partially (4 to 12 hours)
  • Saw with a concrete saw to the depth (1 inch for 4 inch slab)
  • Cleaner appearance; later cracks follow the saw cuts

Step 14: Final finish

For typical residential:

  • Steel trowel finish (smoothed and sealed)
  • Broom finish (light texture; better slip resistance for outdoor flat)
  • Float finish (gentler texture; mid)

For driveways and outdoor flat: typically broom finish. For interior slabs (basements, garages): typically steel trowel or troweled and floated.

Step 15: Allow initial cure

  • Concrete sets in 4 to 8 hours
  • Walk on it after 24 hours (carefully)
  • Drive on it after 7 days
  • Full strength: 28 days

Curing

Curing is critical:

  • Concrete cures (gains strength) for 28 days minimum
  • Hydration requires moisture
  • Loss of moisture = weak concrete

Methods:

Plastic sheeting

  • Cover with plastic
  • Traps moisture
  • Easy and effective
  • Remove for finishing or after 7 days

Curing compound

  • Liquid spray on the surface
  • Forms a film that retains moisture
  • Wears away over time
  • Common for commercial; residential too

Water cure

  • Mist the surface periodically
  • Continuous moisture
  • Best results
  • Most labor

Combined approach

  • Curing compound or plastic for initial cure
  • Water for finer-quality results

Common issues

Cracking

Causes:

  • Slab too thick or too thin
  • Inadequate reinforcement
  • Poor base preparation
  • Wrong concrete mix
  • Failed control joints (cracks form between joints)
  • Curing problems
  • Heavy load too soon

Prevention:

  • Proper base
  • Proper reinforcement
  • Adequate control joints
  • Proper cure
  • Avoid heavy load until cured

Surface failure (dusting, scaling, spalling)

Causes:

  • Adding water to concrete on the truck (weakens it)
  • Working bleed water back into the surface
  • Poor finishing technique
  • Inadequate cure
  • Freeze-thaw damage (cold-weather pour issue)

Color variations

Causes:

  • Different cement batches
  • Different aggregate
  • Different cure conditions
  • Different placement times

Pump failures during placement

  • Backup plan needed
  • Sometimes contractor must hand-place concrete

Specific application notes

Driveway

  • Typical 4 inch thickness (sometimes 5 to 6 inch for heavy vehicles)
  • Slope away from house
  • Control joints every 8 to 12 ft
  • Reinforcement: wire mesh or rebar grid

Sidewalk

  • Typical 4 inch thickness
  • Control joints every 5 to 6 ft
  • Often broom finish

Patio

  • Typical 4 inch thickness
  • Drainage slope

Garage slab

  • Typical 4 inch thickness
  • May have integral curbs
  • Floor drains in some installations
  • Slope toward drain

Foundation slab

  • Different design (frost depth, footing connection)
  • Beyond typical flatwork; consult structural plans

Customer expectations

  • "Initial cure: 24 hours; can walk on; not heavy use"
  • "Driving on it: wait 7 days minimum"
  • "Full strength: 28 days"
  • "Hairline cracks: normal as concrete shrinks; will appear in first 90 days"
  • "Sealing: optional but recommended every 2 to 3 years"
