Composite Deck Boards Fade Unevenly in the First Season: Single-Observable Diagnosis

Why this matters

A call about uneven fading on a composite deck in its first summer is one of the most common post-installation callbacks in deck building, and it is also one of the most mishandled. The installer's instinct is to treat it as a material defect and contact the manufacturer - which is sometimes correct but is the wrong first step. Two of the three causes are not material defects at all, and one of those two is an installation error. Getting to the right branch before calling the manufacturer keeps the warranty process accurate and protects the contractor's relationship with the customer.

What the single observable tells you

Uneven fade on boards in the same run, from the same installation, in the first summer means the boards are not all receiving the same inputs. Adjacent boards that were installed identically, from the same material lot, under the same sun exposure, should weather at the same rate in the first season. When they do not, something differs between the boards - their face orientation, their sun exposure, or their production lot.

Candidate 1: Board installed face-down (orientation error)

Composite boards have a show face and a mill face. The show face is the textured, cap-layer face intended to be exposed. The mill face is the underside. The show face is manufactured with higher UV-stabilizer concentration in the cap layer; this is what allows the board to resist UV degradation at the rated level. A board installed mill-face-up has its lower-UV-resistance surface exposed to the sun and will fade noticeably faster than its correctly oriented neighbors, often within a single summer.

How to confirm: look at the exposed end grain at the board ends (at a fascia gap, a cut end, or the rim board junction). The show face typically has a slightly more defined texture and the cap layer is visible as a consistent surface. The mill face is flatter and may show a slightly different surface color at the edge. If the board was cut during installation, the cut end may show the cap layer thickness clearly on one face.

If end grain is not accessible, check for the face embossment: most composite boards have the pattern embossed only on the show face. A board that appears flat-textured while its neighbors show a defined wood-grain relief is likely installed face-down.

Correction: a board installed face-down must be reversed or replaced. Reversing requires removing the board, flipping it, and re-fastening. If the fastener holes are hidden fasteners in the side groove, reversing is straightforward. If the board was face-screwed, the screw holes on the now-exposed face must be assessed for visual impact. Replacement is cleaner if the board is highly visible.

Candidate 2: Shading differential

A pergola, awning, tree canopy, adjacent structure, or roof overhang shading part of the deck means some boards receive less UV than adjacent boards. Shaded boards retain their original color through the first season while exposed boards undergo normal first-season weathering - a process during which most composite products lighten slightly or shift in tone before stabilizing. The result is a visible mismatch, but both sets of boards are performing within spec.

How to confirm: match the pattern of faded boards to the shade pattern at peak sun hours (typically noon to 3 p.m.). If the faded boards are consistently in the unshaded zone and the lighter boards are consistently under the structure or overhang, shading differential is confirmed.

Correction: this is not a defect. The explanation is the correction. Both sets of boards will eventually stabilize at their respective steady-state color, but because one side is exposed and one is shaded, the color difference will persist over the life of the deck. Set the customer's expectation accurately. This is the same phenomenon visible on any two-zone deck with mixed sun exposure, and it is disclosed in most manufacturer weathering guidance.

Candidate 3: Mixed production batches

Color variation between production lots is a known characteristic of composite decking. Boards from different production runs - different extrusion dates, different material batches - may have slightly different baseline colors. These differences are often imperceptible at installation. After first-season UV weathering, however, boards from different lots weather at slightly different rates and the color difference becomes visible.

How to confirm: locate offcuts from the installation or check the shipping labels, board bundles, or installation packaging for lot numbers. If boards from two or more lot numbers are present in the affected area, batch mixing is the cause. If all lot numbers are the same, batch mixing is ruled out and you return to Candidates 1 and 2.

Correction: this is an explanation, not a defect. For future installations, pull boards from the same lot number for any continuous run. If the customer's project is large enough to span multiple lots, install lot-matched boards in separate zones (front half vs. back half of a large deck) rather than mixing within the same run.

Document the lot numbers found and include them in the job file for future warranty reference.

Timing note: first-season weathering is normal

Most composite manufacturers document that new boards undergo a color-settling period in the first season. Aggressive deck washing, power washing, or use of cleaning products before this weathering period completes can strip or disrupt the cap layer surface. If the customer washed the deck during the first summer with a pressure washer or an abrasive cleaner, note this as a possible complicating factor and compare any affected boards to unwashed areas.
