Galvanized Mesh Fence Appears to Have the Smooth Face Facing Inward Instead of Outward: Single-Observable Diagnosis
Why this matters
The edge finish on chain-link and welded wire mesh exists for a functional reason: the smooth knuckled edge is intended to face the side where people and animals make contact, reducing the risk of lacerations. Installing mesh with the knuckled edge facing outward instead of inward is a commissioning fault that affects both safety and, for boundary fences, may violate HOA or permit aesthetic requirements. Identifying the correct standard for the specific mesh type before condemning the installation prevents unnecessary remediation.
Step 1 - Confirm what "correct orientation" means for this mesh type
Not all mesh products have the same orientation requirement. Spend two minutes confirming the standard before proceeding.
Chain-link (woven):
- Each vertical wire is bent into a series of helical loops at the selvedge (top and bottom edge).
- The two selvedge treatments in common use are knuckled (loops bent flat, smooth to the touch) and twisted (loops left open, sharp to the touch).
- Standard practice for residential and animal-containment applications: knuckled selvedge faces inward (toward occupants or animals); twisted selvedge faces outward or is avoided entirely on animal runs.
- If both selvedges are knuckled, orientation is functionally symmetric and the complaint is aesthetic only.
Welded wire (grid mesh):
- Cut wires at the perimeter leave a sharp stub on one face of each horizontal wire.
- The "smooth face" is the side where horizontal wires pass over verticals (the weld bead is on the back).
- Standard practice: smooth face outward for boundary applications; cut-wire stubs face inward only if no contact hazard exists.
Action: Photograph both selvedges or both faces close up before making any determination. Note in the job record which face is currently inward and which is outward.
Step 2 - Assess whether the installation actually deviates from standard
Once you know the product type and the correct orientation, compare it to what is installed.

If the finding is "confirmed orientation fault," proceed to Step 3. If aesthetic only, proceed to Step 4.
Step 3 - Evaluate remediation options for a confirmed fault
Two remediation paths exist. Choose based on how the mesh is attached and whether re-tensioning is physically possible.
Path A - Re-hang the mesh (preferred when feasible):
- Applies to chain-link panels that are tension-bar-clipped to line posts. The mesh can be detached from the tension bars, flipped so the correct selvedge faces inward, and re-tensioned.
- Labour-intensive but does not require replacing materials.
- Feasible when: posts are not damaged, existing tension bars and brace bands are reusable, and the mesh has not been cut to length in a way that makes re-use impractical.
- Not feasible when: mesh has been crimped, cut asymmetrically, or the job used a single continuous run that was woven through corner posts.
Path B - Replace the mesh run:
- Required when the mesh cannot be re-hung intact, or when the product has both selvedges identical and the "wrong" face was the result of a material specification error (e.g., all-twisted selvedge was ordered for a dog run).
- Document the original material and the replacement specification clearly for the change order.
Before doing any remediation on a fence adjacent to a property boundary, confirm the permit conditions and HOA covenants. Some jurisdictions specify that the "finished side" (smooth or structural face) must face the public right of way. A remediation that corrects the safety orientation but inverts the aesthetically required face will create a second complaint. Resolve both in one visit.
Step 4 - Document and communicate findings
Regardless of whether remediation is required, create a record before leaving site.
- Photograph the selvedge or face in question with a measuring tape or gloved hand in frame for scale.
- Note the mesh product specification (gauge, opening size, selvedge type) from the delivery ticket or product label.
- If the fault is a commissioning error by your crew, document it as a warranty callback with root cause noted.
- If the customer or a prior contractor installed the mesh and you were called to assess, document your findings in writing and deliver a scope of work for correction as a separate billable item.
- If the complaint is aesthetic only and no safety hazard exists, document that finding and close the ticket with a clear explanation to the customer.
