Gate Hardware Sizing

Why this matters

A fence gate is the part that fails first. Wood gates sag; metal gates rust at hinges; vinyl gates warp; latches break. Most failures trace to undersized hardware: hinges rated for too-light a load, latches not designed for the gate weight. A contractor who sizes the hardware correctly produces gates that last; one who uses bin-bargain hardware produces callbacks within a year.

Gate weight estimation

Each gate has approximate weight:

Hinge sizing

The hinge supports the gate's weight. Per hinge:

A typical pedestrian gate needs 2 to 3 hinges:

  • 2 hinges: gate up to 50 lb (small light gate)
  • 3 hinges: gate 50 to 150 lb (most pedestrian)
  • 4 hinges: heavier gates

For larger gates: per hinge load = gate weight / number of hinges. Match hinge rating to that load.

Hinge types

  • Strap hinge: most common; long strap rotates on a bolt
  • Tee hinge: T-shaped; for lighter applications
  • Heavy-duty drive gate hinge: for vehicle gates
  • Self-closing spring hinge: for pool gates; meets safety code

Hinge mounting

Sag prevention

A gate naturally wants to sag at the latch end:

Diagonal brace

  • Diagonal lumber from top of latch side to bottom of hinge side
  • Provides geometric resistance to sag
  • Standard on wood gates

Z-frame

  • Top horizontal + diagonal + bottom horizontal
  • Common for wood gates
  • Allows for picket facing

Steel anti-sag kit

  • Steel cable from top hinge corner to bottom latch corner
  • Adjustable turnbuckle to tighten
  • Common solution for sagging gates

Metal gate frame

  • Metal frame within wood / vinyl gate
  • Prevents geometric racking
  • Premium approach

Installation principles

Hinges on the post

  • Both hinges on the same post (one on each end is wrong for swinging gate)
  • Hinge post must be heavier than other posts
  • Bolt-through if possible

Latch on the opposing post

  • Lighter loads at latch
  • Standard post acceptable

Gate opening direction

  • Standard: gate swings out from the home / yard
  • Reverses for pool gate (swings away from pool)
  • Check code requirements

Drop pin / drop rod

NEVER install a pool gate that doesn't meet IRC R326.4 / ASTM F2200 requirements (self-closing, self-latching, 54 inch latch height, hinge and latch on pool side, no openings under 4 inches). A non-compliant pool gate is a code violation AND a real child-safety hazard. Verify the specific code requirements; install compliant hardware; do not compromise.
