LiftMaster vs DoorKing vs Viking Gate Operator: No-Operate Fault Tree
Why this matters
A gate operator that will not run is the highest-stakes service call a fence crew takes, because the same machine that opens a driveway can crush a child or a vehicle. UL 325 governs entrapment protection, and a dead operator is often a symptom of a safety system doing its job, not a failure to be bypassed. The three platforms a tech sees most (LiftMaster/Elite, DoorKing, and Viking) share the same fault categories but report them differently: LiftMaster reads back coded faults on its display board, DoorKing toggles DIP switches and shows LED states, and Viking uses jumper settings and a fault count. This fault tree isolates a no-operate condition across all three without ever defeating an entrapment sensor.
Symptom presentation
The customer reports one of: gate is fully dead (no lights, no hum), operator powers up but will not move on command, gate starts then immediately reverses or stops, or gate runs erratically and "times out." Each maps to a different branch. The first job on site is to classify which one you have before touching a setting, because an operator that reverses on command is a safety device reacting, while a fully dead board is a power or logic fault.
Quick checks
Before opening the logic board, confirm the basics that fail most.
Power: read incoming voltage at the input terminals against the operator's rating (commonly 120 VAC or 24 VDC battery on solar/DC units). A DC operator on dead batteries refuses to run even with the transformer connected if the charger has failed. Confirm the main breaker and any disconnect.
Manual release: pull the manual disconnect and move the gate by hand through its full travel. It must be free, level, and plumb. A binding hinge, a dragging slide roller, a frozen track, or a gate racked out of square draws excess current and trips the obstruction/current sensor every cycle. This single check resolves a large share of "operator is broken" calls; the operator is fine and the gate is the problem.
Safety inputs: identify every photo eye, edge sensor, and loop. A misaligned or dirty photo eye, a cut edge wire, or a stuck shadow loop all read as a permanent obstruction and hold the gate. Note which devices are wired to which terminals before disturbing anything.
Isolation tree

Fully dead, no LEDs. Confirm input power at the terminals. If power is present and the board is dark: on a DC unit check battery voltage under load (a battery that reads near nominal open-circuit can collapse under inrush) and check charger output; on an AC unit check the on-board fuse and transformer secondary. No power out of the fuse with power in equals a blown fuse; find the short before replacing.
Powers up, will not move on command. Verify the command reaches the board: trigger from the on-board open button, not the remote, to split radio/access-control faults from operator faults. If on-board open works and the remote does not, the fault is upstream (receiver, keypad, loop, telephone entry on DoorKing). If on-board open also fails to move the gate, read the status display (LiftMaster fault code, DoorKing LED pattern, Viking error count) and cross it to the manual; the most common is an entrapment-sensor fault holding the operator.
Starts then reverses or stops. This is an entrapment or current event, the operator protecting someone. On a leading-edge reverse, look at the photo eye/edge on the closing side and the inherent current sensor. Run the manual-force check again: if the gate binds anywhere in travel, the current sensor reverses correctly and the gate is at fault, not the operator. If travel is free, suspect a misaligned eye, a wet/cut edge sensor, or current sensitivity trimmed too tight for cold-weather drag.
Runs erratically, times out. Check the open/close limits. LiftMaster learns limits into the board; DoorKing and Viking use limit nuts/switches on the operator. A drifting magnetic limit or a slipping nut makes the operator never see "fully open," so it times out on the run timer and faults. Re-learn or reset limits, then confirm full travel.
Confirming diagnosis
Prove the fault before you bill the part.
Suspected dead battery/charger (DC LiftMaster/solar units): load-test the battery and meter charger output; a battery that drops below the low-voltage cutoff under inrush confirms it even when it reads acceptable at rest.
Suspected safety-input fault: with the operator in a safe state, individually bridge each safety input per the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to see the fault clear, then restore the device and find the real defect (alignment, water, cut wire). Never leave a safety input bypassed.
Suspected gate-mechanical drag: the manual-force test confirms it. A gate you cannot move smoothly by hand will never run cleanly under power; fix the hinge, roller, track, or square first.
Suspected limit/timer fault: cycle the gate and confirm each limit is reached before the run timer expires.
Remediation
Restore the defect, not the symptom. Replace blown fuses only after clearing the short. Replace failed batteries and chargers as a pair on DC units. Realign or replace photo eyes and edge sensors, repair cut safety wiring, and re-seal connections against water. Re-square and re-hang a racked gate, replace worn rollers or hinges, and clear/level a slide track so the gate moves freely before re-energizing. Re-learn limits and reset run timers to actual travel. After any repair, run a full UL 325 entrapment test: obstruct the gate in each direction and confirm it reverses or stops as required for the operator's usage class.
Never disable, jumper out, or "temporarily" bypass a photo eye, edge sensor, or inherent obstruction sensor to make a gate run. These are UL 325 entrapment protections. A bypassed sensor that crushes a person is a foreseeable fatality and uninsurable liability. If a safety device is faulting, repair it; if the gate cannot be made safe, lock it out and tag it out of service.
