New Gate Install Won't Stay Closed: Latch vs Hinge vs Post Commissioning Decision Tree

Why this matters

A new gate that will not stay closed is a commissioning failure the customer notices on day one, and it almost always traces to one of three setup variables: the latch alignment, the hinge orientation or adjustment, or the plumb and spacing of the posts. The frustrating part is that all three present the same way (the gate drifts open or bounces off the latch) so techs chase the latch when the real issue is a post out of plumb feeding a gate that swings on its own. Diagnosing it at commissioning, before the customer lives with it, is the cheapest fix window you will ever have because nothing has worn in yet and every adjustment is still available. Getting it right the first time also protects the install reputation: a gate that latches cleanly is the most visible test of whether the whole fence was set true.

The mechanics: a gate stays closed when it swings to a neutral or closing rest position and the latch engages a strike that is aligned in all three dimensions. Break any of those (post out of plumb makes it self-open, hinges set to self-open, latch misaligned to the strike) and it pops open.

Symptom presentation

  • Gate swings open on its own when released points at post plumb (the swing post leans so gravity pulls the gate open) or hinge orientation.
  • Gate reaches the latch but bounces off or does not engage points at latch-to-strike alignment.
  • Gate binds or scrapes before reaching the latch points at post spacing (too tight) or hinge post sag/lean (too tight or rubbing).
  • Latch engages but rattles loose points at strike adjustment or latch hardware.

Quick checks

  1. Release-and-watch test. Open the gate halfway and release. If it swings fully open or fully closed on its own, a post is out of plumb in the swing direction. A true gate stays where you leave it (or is intentionally set to self-close).
  2. Post plumb, both posts. Level the hinge post and the latch post on two faces each. Either out of plumb throws the swing and the latch alignment.
  3. Latch-to-strike alignment. Close the gate slowly to the latch and observe whether the latch meets the strike squarely in height and depth. Misalignment in any axis prevents clean engagement.
  4. Opening gap and clearance. Measure the gap at the latch side top and bottom. Unequal gaps reveal a racked frame or a leaning post; a too-tight gap causes binding.

  • When released, does the gate swing open on its own?
    • Yes -> POST/SWING branch. The hinge or swing post is out of plumb, tilting the swing arc so the gate gravity-opens. Plumb the post first. Confirm: a gate on a plumb post and level hinges rests where left. (If self-closing is desired, that is a deliberate hinge offset, not a defect.)
    • No -> continue.
  • Does the gate bind or scrape before reaching the latch?
    • Yes -> SPACING/HINGE branch. Posts set too close, a leaning hinge post, or a sagging frame make the gate rub. Check post spacing against the gate width plus hinge/latch hardware allowance and re-plumb the hinge post.
    • No -> continue.
  • Does the gate reach the latch but fail to engage or bounce off?
    • Yes -> LATCH branch. The strike is misaligned to the latch in height, depth, or lateral position. Adjust the strike to meet the latch squarely. Confirm by slow-closing and watching engagement.
  • Does the latch engage but rattle or release under wind/bump?
    • Yes -> Strike depth or latch hardware. Tighten the strike position so the latch seats positively, or upgrade to a positive-latching mechanism.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Post/swing: Confirm with the release test and a level. An out-of-plumb hinge post that makes the gate self-open is the definitive tell. Re-plumbing the post and re-testing the rest position confirms the cause.
  • Spacing/hinge: Confirm by measuring post spacing against the gate width plus required hardware clearance per the gate and hardware specs. Binding that clears once the hinge post is plumbed and spacing corrected confirms.
  • Latch: Confirm by slow-closing. If the gate arrives at the latch position but the latch and strike do not meet squarely, the strike alignment is the cause. Correcting the strike and getting clean engagement confirms.

Remediation

  • Post/swing: Reset the hinge post truly plumb (or set the intended self-close offset deliberately), on an adequate footing for the gate's overturning load per ASTM F537. Re-test the rest position.
  • Spacing/hinge: Correct post spacing to the gate width plus hardware clearance, plumb the hinge post, and verify the hinges are level so the gate hangs square. Reset hinge fasteners into solid material.
  • Latch: Align the strike to the latch in height, depth, and lateral position so the latch engages on a normal swing. For wind-prone or self-latching needs, use a positive-latching mechanism and set the strike for a firm seat.
  • Final commissioning: Swing and latch the gate ten times; it should latch cleanly every time and rest correctly when released.
