Perimeter Intrusion Detection System Selection
Why this matters
Commercial and critical-infrastructure perimeter projects increasingly bundle a Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS) with the fence itself. The fence contractor is often the lead trade and the PIDS becomes a low-voltage subcontract. Picking the wrong technology for the threat and the environment produces a nuisance-alarm rate that drives the customer to disable the system within months. This article documents the four mainstream PIDS technologies and the selection logic.
Technology 1: Fence-mounted vibration sensor
A piezo-electric or microphonic cable is attached to every fabric panel (chain-link) or to every rail (welded-mesh, palisade). Cable vibration from cutting, climbing, or lifting the fabric produces a signal processed by a head-end controller. Vendors include Senstar (FlexZone), Southwest Microwave (Intrepid MicroPoint II), Magal RBtec (G-Fence), and Detection Technologies (FiberPatrol). Detection zones are typically 100 to 400 meters per processor, with cut and climb classification.
Strength: low installed cost relative to other technologies; can be retrofitted to an existing fence. Weakness: nuisance alarms from wind, wildlife, and traffic vibration; requires the fence fabric to be tensioned and rigid (loose fabric produces constant noise).
Technology 2: Distributed fiber-optic sensor
A single fiber-optic cable runs along the fence; an optical interrogator at one end uses Rayleigh backscatter or Mach-Zehnder interferometry to detect acoustic and vibration disturbances along the cable. Zone resolution is typically 5 to 10 meters per zone with a total cable length of 50 to 80 kilometers per interrogator. Vendors include Fotech, OptaSense, FiberSenSys, and AP Sensing.
Strength: very long total perimeter from a single head-end; immune to electromagnetic interference; intrinsically safe (suitable for petrochemical sites). Weakness: high capital cost of the interrogator; tuning the algorithms for the site is multi-week process; requires cable splicing by a trained fiber technician.
Technology 3: Taut-wire
Horizontal wires (10 to 30 strands, 4 to 8 inches apart) are tensioned between sensor posts. A change in tension (push, climb, cut) triggers a microswitch or load cell. Vendors include Magal Senstar, Sorhea, and CIAS. Zone length is typically 50 to 200 meters between sensor posts.
Strength: very low nuisance-alarm rate; passes prison and military qualifications. Weakness: high installed cost; tensioning maintenance after thermal cycles; the wires themselves are a separate physical barrier in front of the fence and consume a strip of land.
Technology 4: Microwave or infrared volumetric
A transmitter sends a microwave or infrared beam to a receiver; an intruder crossing the beam triggers an alarm. Bistatic microwave produces a footprint roughly 4 to 12 meters wide and up to 200 meters long; passive infrared columns produce a vertical curtain at the perimeter. Vendors include Optex (Redscan, OPS column sensors), Senstar UltraWave, Southwest Microwave Micronet.
Strength: detects approach before fence contact; useful as a sterile-zone sensor inboard of the fence. Weakness: requires line-of-sight; defeated by terrain irregularities and dense vegetation; volumetric sensors are sensitive to wildlife.

Integration with the head-end
Every PIDS produces an alarm output: dry-contact relay, RS-485 serial, or IP. The integration with the site's video management system (VMS) and security operations center (SOC) is the deliverable the customer actually values. The fence contractor's scope typically ends at the PIDS controller; the VMS integrator picks up from there. Coordinate the IP address scheme, the relay-contact map, and the camera-callup logic in the design submittal so the SOC operator sees a camera popup when a zone alarms.
Environmental tuning
Every PIDS needs a 30 to 90 day tuning period after installation. During tuning the algorithms learn the ambient noise floor (wind, rain, traffic, wildlife). The system should not be considered final-accepted until a 30-day continuous-operation log shows the customer's agreed nuisance-alarm rate (typically less than 1 per zone per 24 hours). Plan the contract milestones around this.
