Fence Post Setting Depth and Concrete
Why this matters
A fence post set too shallow heaves or leans within months. A post set too deep wastes labor and materials. A post set without proper concrete leans within years. The correct combination of depth and concrete delivers a fence that stays plumb for the life of the materials.
Depth rule
The standard depth rule for fence posts:
- 1/3 of total post length below grade
- Or 2 feet minimum
- Or below the frost line (whichever is deeper)
For typical 8 ft fence post:
- 1/3 of 8 ft = 32 inches below grade
- Effective height above grade: 64 inches
Frost line considerations
In cold climates, frost line depth typically:

Below the frost line: no freeze heave.
A post set above the frost line:
- Lifts as soil freezes
- Settles back as soil thaws
- Cumulatively pushes the post up over years
- Eventually visible (post above grade)
For cold climates, always extend below the frost line.
Hole diameter
Standard rule: 3 times the post diameter
For 4x4 post (3.5 inch actual):
- Hole 10 to 12 inch diameter
- Allows concrete around the post
For larger posts:
- Proportionally larger
- 6x6 post: 18 inch diameter
- Metal post: per manufacturer
Concrete options
Standard Portland cement mix
- Most common
- Pre-mix per gallon
- Cures in 24-72 hours
Fast-set (Quikrete Fast-Set)
- Sets in 20-40 minutes
- More expensive per bag
- Best for production fence work
- Pour dry into hole; add water; mix gently
Expanding foam (Sika Post Fix)
- No mixing required
- 4 oz fills typical hole
- Premium pricing
- Less common but growing
Gravel + soil (no concrete)
- Acceptable for some applications
- Less stable than concrete
- Lower cost but lower quality
Procedure for standard post setting
Step 1: Mark location
- Measure between corners
- Verify property line if applicable
- String line between corners for straight runs
Step 2: Dig hole
- Post hole digger (clamshell) or auger
- To required depth
- Sides as vertical as possible
Step 3: Add gravel base
- 4 to 6 inches of crushed stone at bottom
- Drainage; prevents water from collecting at post base
- Tamp gravel
Step 4: Cut post to length
- Length = height above grade + depth in hole
- Treat cut ends with wood preservative
Step 5: Position post
- Drop post in hole
- Verify level on two adjacent sides
- Brace temporarily (1x4 boards angled from post to ground; staked)
Step 6: Add concrete
For fast-set:
- Pour dry concrete around the post
- Add water per manufacturer (typically 1 to 2 gallons per 50 lb bag)
- Stir gently with a stick or thin piece of metal
For standard mix:
- Mix in wheelbarrow per manufacturer
- Shovel into hole around post
- Tamp to remove air pockets
Step 7: Slope concrete
- Top of concrete should slope away from post
- 1/2 inch slope; water drains away from post
Step 8: Allow to cure
- Fast-set: 20-40 minutes initial; 24 hours full
- Standard: 24-48 hours initial; 7 days full
- Don't load with significant weight during cure
Step 9: Re-verify level
- Sometimes posts shift slightly during cure
- Adjust before concrete fully sets
Step 10: Backfill
- Add soil over the concrete
- Restore surface (grass, mulch, gravel)
Specific situations
Steep slope
- Posts stepped down the slope
- Each post extends to frost line below the step
- Larger footing for the loads
Wet area
- Drainage important
- Larger gravel base
- Consider deeper post
Tight space (between buildings, trees)
- Custom approach
- Manual hole digger if no machine access
- Smaller equipment
Sand or loose soil
- Larger hole (more concrete)
- Deeper post
- Sometimes engineering needed for tall fences
Clay soil
- Standard procedure works
- Verify drainage at bottom
- Concrete adheres well
Rocky soil
- Difficult excavation
- May need rock auger or breaker
- Hole may be irregular shape; OK
Common errors
Insufficient depth
- Most common error
- Post leans or heaves within months
- Re-do required
No gravel base
- Water collects under post
- Rapid wood rot
- Post fails early
Concrete in contact with wood post
- Some concrete chemistries can degrade wood
- Pressure-treated wood typically OK
- Standard wood may suffer
For high-end installs:
- Concrete slope away
- Some installers use post saver kit (waterproof barrier between concrete and post)
Forgetting to brace
- Post leans before concrete sets
- Resetting after cure is harder
Wrong concrete amount
- Too little: post not stable
- Too much: wasted material
- Standard: 1 to 2 bags per 12-inch hole
Concrete sets fast in heat; slow in cold
- Adjust mix and timing
- Hot day: work faster
- Cold day: work slower; consider fast-set
Post height considerations
When setting multiple posts:
Match neighboring posts
- Use string line at the top
- All posts at the same level
- Adjust each post height if needed
For tall fences
- Posts may need to be longer to reach the height
- Standard 8 ft post for typical 6 ft fence (1/3 below grade)
- 10 ft post for 7 to 8 ft fence
Slope handling
- For sloped properties:
- Stepped fence: posts at varying heights
- Racked fence: posts plumb; rails follow slope
- Decision based on aesthetic and grade
Timing
For typical post setting:
- Single post: 30 to 60 minutes (excavation + set + initial cure)
- Multiple posts: efficient batch (dig all; set all; cure all)
- Production fence: 6 to 12 posts per day per crew
NEVER skip the gravel base at the bottom of the post hole. Without gravel, water collects at the wood post and accelerates rot. Even pressure-treated wood deteriorates faster in standing water. The few cents of gravel adds years to the post's life; the few minutes of installation pays off in customer satisfaction.
