Garage Door Balance Test
Why this matters
The door balance test is the single most diagnostic procedure in garage door service. A correctly balanced door operates with the opener doing only the minor work of motion control - the spring system carries the door's weight. A poorly balanced door forces the opener to lift the door's full weight, wearing the opener motor, the chain or belt, and the rail. Most "opener strains," "door slamming closed," and "door rises when released" complaints trace back to balance issues. The test takes 90 seconds and is the foundation of every diagnostic visit.
When to use this procedure
- Every annual service visit
- Every spring service visit (verify after work)
- Diagnostic when opener shows symptoms (straining, motor noise, slow operation)
- Pre-quote inspection before spring or opener replacement
- After any door modification (panel replacement, weatherseal, etc.)
- Customer complaints of door operation issues

Safety
Disconnect the opener before performing the balance test. With the opener engaged, the door is suspended by both the springs AND the opener - the test is invalid AND the door may fall unexpectedly if the spring is failed. Pull the emergency release cord (red cord hanging from the opener carriage) to disconnect.
Stand to the side of the door during the test - not directly in the door's potential closing path. A failed spring during the test causes the door to fall; clear of the closing path means clear of the failure path.
The balance test procedure
Step 1: Open the door fully
- Use the opener to open the door fully (top of the tracks)
- Confirm the door is at its full open position
Step 2: Disconnect the opener
- Locate the red emergency release cord hanging from the opener carriage
- Pull the cord DOWN and toward the door
- The carriage disconnects from the opener trolley
- The door is now in manual mode
Step 3: Lower the door manually to about waist height
- Stand at the center of the door
- Lower the door manually to approximately 3-4 feet above the floor (waist height)
- The door should lower with smooth, controlled motion
- Release the door
Step 4: Observe the result
This is the test:

A correctly balanced door holds at any position with the opener disconnected. Door weight is exactly balanced by spring tension.
Step 5: If the door is unbalanced
For torsion spring systems:
- Door wants to open: spring over-tensioned. Wind down (carefully, with proper winding bars) 1/4 turn at a time. Re-test.
- Door falls: spring under-tensioned or failed. Wind up 1/4 turn at a time (if spring is intact). If significantly off OR spring is broken, full spring replacement is needed.
For extension spring systems:
- Door wants to open: spring rated too high for door weight. Replace with lower-capacity spring matching door weight.
- Door falls: spring rated too low for door weight. Replace with higher-capacity spring.
Step 6: Reconnect the opener
- Move the door to the closed position manually
- Pull the red cord toward the door OR slide the trolley back along the rail until it re-engages with the carriage
- Operate the door with the opener to verify normal operation
Variations of the balance test
Quick test (at multiple positions):
- Disconnect opener
- Test door balance at multiple heights:
- 6 inches above floor (mostly closed)
- 3-4 feet (mid-position)
- 6 inches below the top of the tracks (nearly open)
- Door should hold at each position
- If the door behaves differently at different heights, the spring is not delivering even force across its range - typical of older or worn springs
Quantitative test (with door weight scale):
- Connect a door weight scale to the bottom of the door
- Lift the door using the scale
- Read the door weight at multiple positions
- Reading should be 0 ± 10 pounds at the mid-position
- Reading near 0 ± 5 pounds across the full range indicates excellent balance
Why door balance matters
The opener is sized to do small amounts of work:
- Operating motor: typically 0.5 to 1 HP
- Designed to do approximately 25 pounds of net lifting at most
When the door is balanced:
- Opener does the work of overcoming friction in the system
- Motor runs at light load
- Long opener life (typically 15+ years on a balanced door)
When the door is unbalanced:
- Opener carries some or all of the door weight
- Motor strains; current draws are elevated
- Opener wears faster (5-10 years typical for chronic balance issues)
- Force-sensitive systems may reverse mid-cycle
- Customer complains about door issues
The balance is the foundation; the opener is the accessory.
Common findings during balance test
Spring failure (broken coils):
- Door drops rapidly when released
- Visible broken coils on the spring
- Replacement needed
Spring loss of strength (no visible failure):
- Springs typically lose 1-2 percent of tension per year of cycling
- After many years, the spring delivers significantly less force than when new
- Common after 5-7 years
- Resolves with replacement; the original-spec spring may not be enough for an aging door
Door not unbalanced but feels heavy:
- The door is binding on the tracks
- Worn rollers, damaged tracks, debris in the tracks
- The springs are correct; the door is fighting friction
- Address the friction (replace rollers, clean tracks)
Different balance at different door positions:
- Older springs lose strength unevenly across their stretch range
- Mixed spring sizes (one new, one old) cause this
- Replace both springs for consistency
Door bound at the top:
- Door is at the upper limit of the track
- Top tracks need adjustment OR roller stops are too low
Reconnecting the opener safely
After the test, the door is in manual mode. To re-engage the opener:
