Door Runs on Wall Button but Not Remote: Bypass vs Normal Decision Tree
Why this matters
When the wall button runs the door but the handheld remote will not, the customer often assumes the opener is broken. The wall button is the bypass condition; the remote is the normal radio path. The door working from the bypass tells you the motor, drive, limits, and force are fine and the fault sits in the radio receive path or the remote itself. This tree walks the radio path from remote to opener and isolates which link is dead.
Step 1: Confirm the symptom precisely
Press the wall button several times; observe full open and close. Press the remote at three distances: standing under the opener head, halfway down the driveway, and at the curb.
- Wall button always works, remote never works at any distance: receiver or remote dead.
- Wall button always works, remote works under the head only: range fault, antenna or interference.
- Wall button always works, remote works intermittently from normal distance: weak battery, marginal antenna, or intermittent interference.
- Wall button stops working after several presses: opener thermal or capacitor fault, not a remote problem.
Document which pattern you see.
Step 2: Battery in the remote
Always the first check. Pop the remote, swap in a fresh battery of the correct chemistry and voltage. Test. Roughly a third of "remote dead" calls close at this step. Carry common coin cells and 9-volt batteries on the truck.
A weak battery often presents as a remote that works at very close range only. The transmitter is firing at reduced power.
Step 3: Remote programming state
Modern openers learn remotes through a receiver button. If the customer recently:
- Cleared the receiver memory (long press on Learn) intentionally or by accident.
- Replaced a wall console or added a smart-home hub that erased the receiver memory.
- Replaced the opener head and never reprogrammed the existing remote.
The remote is orphaned. Reprogram per the opener model procedure: press Learn on the receiver, press the remote button within the time window, watch for the indicator confirmation.
Step 4: Receiver antenna and ground
The receiver antenna is the dangling wire from the opener head, usually six to eighteen inches long. Common faults:
- Antenna coiled up against the metal opener case: range drops to almost nothing. Uncoil and let it hang freely.
- Antenna broken off at the case: solder a new wire of the same length to the receiver pad or install a replacement receiver.
- Antenna touching a metal ceiling or beam: shields signal, relocate.
- Opener case ungrounded or grounded poorly: noisy receive, especially with LED lighting nearby.
Range testing after each adjustment isolates whether antenna work resolved the fault.
Step 5: Interference scan
Modern garage openers operate in shared radio bands. Sources that swamp the receiver:
- Nearby LED bulbs with unfiltered drivers, especially in the opener light socket itself. Replace with a known low-noise bulb rated for garage door opener use.
- Aircraft, military base, or cellular tower nearby: rare but real, usually known to the property.
- New smart-home hub or Wi-Fi access point placed near the opener.
- Neighbor's opener on the same code and frequency cycling at the same time.
Have the customer toggle suspect devices off and retest. The fault disappearing identifies the source.
Step 6: Receiver module test
If the antenna is intact, battery is fresh, programming is current, and interference is ruled out, suspect the receiver:
- Press the receiver Learn button. Confirm the indicator LED lights. No LED means the receiver board is dead or the head's logic board has failed.
- Press a known-good test remote (a programmer or a fresh remote of the matching family) into Learn mode. If a fresh remote will not learn either, the receiver is the fault. Replace the receiver module or the opener logic board per the model.
Step 7: Wall console as confirmation
A wired wall console that talks to the same logic board confirms the motor, capacitor, drive, and limit logic are fine. If the wall console also begins failing during your visit, the fault has migrated to the logic board, not the radio path. Re-scope the job.
Step 8: Multi-remote consistency
If the household has two or more remotes, test them all:
- One remote dead, others work: the dead remote itself is faulty. Replace or reprogram.
- All remotes dead from the same distance: receiver or antenna fault, not the remotes.
- Remotes from different generations (older fixed-code remotes with a newer rolling-code opener): the older remotes cannot be paired. Replace with compatible models.
Step 9: External keypad
The exterior keypad uses the same receiver path. If the keypad works and the handheld does not, the receiver is fine; the handheld is the problem. If the keypad and handheld both fail, the receiver path is the problem.
Step 10: Close-out
Confirm with the customer:
- Remote works from a normal driveway distance, not just under the head.
- Reprogrammed remotes have been demonstrated working.
- Battery type and replacement interval written on the ticket.
- Any new low-noise bulb installed in the opener light socket noted.
If you replaced a receiver, demonstrate Learn-button operation so the customer can program future remotes themselves.
