Extension Spring Replacement on Residential Garage Door

Why this matters

Extension springs are the older style of garage door spring system - mounted parallel to the horizontal tracks, stretching to provide pulling force that lifts the door. Many residential homes (especially built before 1990s) still operate extension-spring systems. While newer construction has shifted to torsion springs, replacement of extension springs remains common service. The safety implications are substantial - extension springs under tension store significant energy and have a documented history of causing serious injury when they fail. Safety cables through the spring are required by current safety standards but are often missing on older installations.

When to use this procedure

  • Extension spring failed (broken coils, visible damage, can't lift the door)
  • Spring system service when other components are replaced
  • Door modification or repair that exposes the springs
  • Pre-sale inspection finding deteriorated springs

Identification - extension vs. torsion

Quick check at the door:

Extension spring system:

  • Springs mounted PARALLEL to the horizontal tracks (along the ceiling, running back from the door)
  • Two springs (one per side typical)
  • Connected via cables and pulleys at the rear of the tracks
  • Visible "S-hook" or "S-clip" connection points

Torsion spring system:

  • Springs mounted ABOVE the door, HORIZONTALLY on a torsion bar
  • One or two springs on the bar
  • Connected to cable drums at each end of the torsion bar

Different systems; different procedures. This article covers extension only.

Tools and materials

  • Replacement extension springs (matched to the existing - color codes by lifting capacity)
  • Safety cables (1/8 inch aircraft cable, with end fittings) - if not already present
  • Locking pliers (Vise-Grip)
  • Cable cutters
  • Eye protection
  • Gloves
  • Ladder rated for the working height
  • Door clamps (heavy-duty C-clamps or commercial door clamps)

Safety

Extension springs under tension store significant kinetic energy. When the cable that holds the spring in tension breaks (which is the cause of "spring failure" in extension systems), the spring rebounds with enough force to break bones, embed in walls, or fatally injure a person standing in its path. Safety cables through the inside of the spring (mandatory by current safety standards) contain a failing spring; without safety cables, a failing extension spring is uncontained.

Always work with the door fully OPEN (springs unloaded). Never work on extension springs with the door closed (springs at full tension).

Spring identification

Extension springs are color-coded by lifting capacity:

The capacity is per-spring. A door with two springs splits the door's weight between them.

Identify by matching:

  1. The color of the existing spring (if intact and visible)
  2. The door weight (using a door weight scale with the spring released)
  3. The spring's manufacturer markings (some specify lifting capacity directly)

A door weighing 200 pounds with two springs requires two 100-pound capacity springs (100 lb each) OR one 200-pound capacity spring if single-spring (less common on extension systems).

Step 1: Open the door fully

  1. Open the door using the opener OR manually
  2. Door is fully open at the top of the tracks
  3. Springs are at neutral position (not extended)
  4. Clamp the door open with C-clamps below the rollers (prevents accidental closure during work)

The door MUST be fully open before any spring work. Extension springs at any closed position are under tension.

Step 2: Release the existing spring

With the door open:

  1. The cable that goes from the spring through the pulley to the door is now slack (door open = spring not extended)
  2. Locate the spring's anchor points:
  • End nearest the door: usually anchored to the track via an S-hook
  • End nearest the rear: anchored to a bracket via S-hook or pulley
  1. Disconnect the spring from its anchor points:
  • Use a wrench on the S-hook to open it (carefully)
  • Lift the spring out of the anchor

Step 3: Inspect the safety cable

If a safety cable is installed:

  1. The cable runs through the inside of the spring's coils
  2. Anchored at both ends, separate from the spring's load path
  3. Purpose: contain a failing spring; prevents the spring from rebounding into the area

If no safety cable is installed:

  1. This is a current-code safety requirement
  2. Install one as part of the replacement
  3. Cable: 1/8 inch aircraft cable, with end fittings (eyelets or thimbles)
  4. Cable length: from one spring anchor to the other, with the spring in the middle

Step 4: Install the new spring

  1. Position the new spring along the horizontal track
  2. Connect the new spring to its anchor points using new S-hooks (don't reuse old hooks; they may have stress damage)
  3. Verify the spring is in the correct orientation (lengthwise along the track)
  4. The new spring should NOT yet be stretched (door is still open)

If installing a new safety cable:

  1. Run the cable through the inside of the new spring's coils
  2. Anchor the cable at both ends to the same anchor points as the spring (or to dedicated cable anchor points)
  3. The safety cable is loose-tied to the spring; it doesn't bear the load during normal operation

Step 5: Verify door balance

  1. Remove the door clamps
  2. Carefully close the door manually (don't activate the opener yet)
  3. The door should close smoothly without resistance
  4. When closed, the door should hold at the bottom without lifting

If the door is unbalanced:

  1. Door is hard to close (spring too strong): mismatched spring lifting capacity. Replace with smaller spring
  2. Door wants to close on its own (spring too weak): mismatched spring. Replace with larger spring
  3. Door tracking issue: cables tangled, cables off the pulleys; inspect and correct

A correctly balanced extension-spring door:

  • Opens with mild effort
  • Holds at any position when released
  • Closes with controlled smoothness

Step 6: Reconnect opener and test
