Safety
All openers manufactured since 1993 are required by UL 325 to have photo eyes. Older openers WITHOUT photo eyes are legal to use if still operational, but installing a NEW opener that lacks photo eyes (impossible - none made today) is illegal. Some customers ask why you can't just "remove the photo eyes" - the answer is liability + code.
Notes
- Opener replacement vs door replacement: customers sometimes call wanting "a new opener" when really their door is the problem. Diagnose carefully + quote what actually needs to be done.
- Battery backup standards: California requires battery backup on new opener installs since 2019; other states adopting. This is the customer's expectation now in many regions.
