Opener Drive Type Selection (Belt vs Chain vs Screw vs Direct)
Why this matters
Customer asks for an opener. You walk in with the wrong drive type and the install runs fine but the customer is unhappy six months later: too loud, too slow, vibrates the bedroom above, struggles with a heavy carriage house door. The drive type decision is set by door weight, headroom, noise tolerance, climate, and travel speed expectation. This reference is the decision framework so the conversation at the door is short and the install is right the first time.

Door weight and motor HP
Every opener carries a horsepower or HPC equivalent rating. Match to the door, do not under size.

Under sized motor on a heavy door creates excessive force at the safety reverse threshold, accelerates wear on the chain, belt, or screw, and shortens motor brush life. Customers buy a unit that "barely lifts the door" and call you in 18 months for warranty work.
Selection decision tree
Step 1: Is there a bedroom or living space above or adjacent to the garage?
- Yes: belt or direct drive only. Chain transmits vibration through the rail into the ceiling joists; screw transmits motor whine through the structure.
- No: any drive acceptable on noise grounds.
Step 2: Will the garage see freeze and thaw cycles or coastal salt air?
- Cold climate (regular sub freezing): screw drive performs poorly; the lubricant on the screw thickens and slows travel below freezing. Avoid screw drives in unconditioned garages in regions with hard winters.
- Coastal salt air: chain corrodes faster, belt is more salt tolerant, direct drive least exposed.
Step 3: How heavy is the door?
- Under 200 lb: any drive matched to HP rating
- 200 to 280 lb: belt or chain with 3/4 HP minimum; direct drive 1 HPC preferred
- Over 280 lb: direct drive (jackshaft) strongly preferred; chain with 1 HP commercial rated as alternative
Step 4: Is headroom limited (low headroom door)?
- Standard ceiling track openers (chain, belt, screw) need 12 inches headroom above the open door for the rail
- Direct drive jackshaft mounts on the torsion shaft and frees the ceiling entirely; only solution for storage above the door or extreme low headroom
Step 5: Customer noise tolerance and budget
- Quietest: direct drive (highest cost, simplest install on torsion spring doors only)
- Quiet: belt drive (mid cost, fits any door)
- Moderate noise: screw drive (mid cost, climate limitations)
- Loudest: chain drive (lowest cost, most durable, best for detached garage)
Battery backup considerations
California (per state law) and an increasing number of jurisdictions require battery backup on new opener installs at residential properties. Confirm local code before quote. Battery backup is built into most current belt and direct drive units; chain and screw drives sometimes require an accessory module. Cycle count on battery is typically 20 to 50 cycles per full charge depending on door weight.
Smart home integration
All major brands now offer Wi-Fi enabled openers (myQ, Genie Aladdin Connect, equivalent for Sommer, LiftMaster commercial). The drive type does not affect smart integration; the head unit electronics do. Confirm the head unit model supports the integration the customer wants before quote.
UL 325 entrapment protection
UL 325 (the safety standard for door operators) requires every residential opener manufactured since 1993 to have two independent entrapment protection systems. Photo eye sensors are one. Force sensing (motor stalls and reverses on contact) is the other. Both must function on every install. Drive type does not affect UL 325 compliance; brand choice and install quality do.
Service interval and consumables
- Chain drive: lubricate chain annually with chain lube (no other product), inspect tension annually, expect chain replacement at 12 to 18 years
- Belt drive: visual belt inspection annually, no lubrication, belt replacement typically 15 to 20 years
- Screw drive: lubricate screw annually with manufacturer specified grease (lithium based, not generic white lithium), heavier wear on threads in dusty environments
- Direct drive: minimal service, motor brushes and bearings rated for full unit life on most models
