Replace Garage Door Cables
Goal
Replace the lift cables on a residential sectional garage door. Cables typically fail from fraying (most common, age-related), rust corrosion (humid climates), or sudden failure (often after a spring break). Cable replacement is medium-risk service work - the door is held by tensioned springs + the cables work IN PAIR with the springs. Both must be balanced for the door to operate correctly.
Prerequisites
- Replacement cables matched by:
- Length (typical 12 - 14 ft for standard residential)
- Diameter (1/8 inch typical residential)
- End fittings (matching the existing - looped end at top, sleeve OR stop at bottom)
- Locking pliers / Vise-Grips (for clamping the door to the track)
- Standard screwdrivers + adjustable wrench
- 45 - 75 minutes per door
Steps
- Verify both cables are the issue. Cables come in pairs (one each side). Symptoms:
- One cable visibly frayed โ replace BOTH cables (worn-side mirroring opposite usually)
- Both cables show wear โ replace both
- One cable broken โ replace BOTH; the other is likely close to failure
- Close the door fully. Cables are slackest when door is closed; safest position to work.
- Clamp the door to the track with locking pliers just above the top roller on BOTH sides. Prevents door from rising during cable replacement.
- Disconnect the opener via the emergency release.
- Inspect the spring system. Cables work in tension WITH the springs. Note position of springs (wound clockwise OR counter-clockwise) before any work.
- Disconnect the existing cable at the bottom bracket. Cable usually has a small stop or sleeve that fits into a slot in the bottom bracket; pull or unscrew.
- Disconnect the cable at the cable drum (at the top, where the cable winds around the drum). Cables are typically attached via a small set screw OR a notched slot.
- Pull the existing cable free.
- Install the new cable:
- Bottom end secured to the bottom bracket per the original method
- Run cable along the inside of the door track
- Top end inserted into the cable drum slot OR set under the set screw
- Adjust cable tension so the cable runs taut along the track without slack:
- With the door clamped CLOSED, the cable should have no slack
- At the drum, the cable should wrap properly around the drum without crossing itself
- Tighten the drum set screw (if applicable) at the appropriate torque.
- Repeat for the other side cable.
- Remove the locking pliers from both door clamps.
- Test door operation manually. Lift the door by hand:
- Should glide with ~10 lb effort
- Should stay where you stop it
- Both cables should look taut throughout the lift
- Reconnect the opener. Cycle the door 3 times. Watch for:
- Smooth operation
- No cable slipping at the drum
- No cable crossing itself
- Door staying square (not skewing left or right)
- Run the safety reverse test (2x4 on the floor).
Verification
- Both cables taut + properly wound at drums
- Door operates smoothly through 3 full cycles
- Door stays square + level during travel
- Safety reverse passes the 2x4 test
- Customer signs the field report
Troubleshooting
- Cable slips off the drum: drum set screw loose OR cable not properly seated. Re-set + retighten.
- Door skews left/right during travel: cables not equally tensioned. Adjust drum positions to equalize.
- Cable looks taut but slips during operation: bottom-bracket attachment not secure OR cable diameter wrong (slips through fitting).
- Door binds at certain travel point: cable touching something or routed wrong. Verify cable path.
A garage door cable under tension stores significant energy. If a cable releases from its bracket while the door is partially open + spring tension is partially loaded, the cable can snap with whip-force injury to face / eyes. ALWAYS keep the door clamped to the track during cable work; never work on a cable with the door partially open. The clamping discipline is what prevents this category of injury.
