Door Reverses Before Reaching Floor
Symptom
Customer reports the garage door starts to close, but reverses back up before reaching the floor. Unlike the "won't close at all" symptom (photo-eye related), this one is about close-force sensitivity - the opener thinks it's hit an obstruction even though there isn't one. Different diagnostic, different resolution.
Likely Causes
In order of frequency:
- Close-force setting too low - 30 % of these calls (door's natural resistance exceeds the setting)
- Door binding mechanically at a specific point in travel - 20 %
- Worn rollers creating drag - 15 %
- Misadjusted down-limit triggering early reverse - 10 %
- Spring out of balance (too much door weight on opener) - 10 %
- Hinges damaged or loose - 8 %
- Track misalignment - 4 %
- Opener trolley dragging in rail - 3 %
Diagnostic Steps
- Disconnect opener via emergency release. Test the door manually:
- Raise + lower the door BY HAND. Should glide with ~10 lb effort throughout.
- Note WHERE in the travel any resistance occurs.
- Releasing the door at half-open: should stay (or float gently). Falls fast = under-sprung. Lifts itself = over-sprung.
- If door binds manually, the opener isn't the problem - the door is. Fix the mechanical issue first.
- If door is balanced + glides manually:
- Reconnect the opener.
- Test the close cycle. Note WHERE the door reverses.
- Trace that travel point - what's resisting? Often a roller, hinge, or track issue at that height.
- Check the down-limit. With the opener disconnected, manually close the door fully. Reconnect the opener WITHOUT changing position. Some openers auto-learn from this; others need a programming sequence.
- Test close force. With the door closing, push UP on the door with both hands (steady, not jerky). Door should resist with about 25 - 30 lb up-force without reversing. If it reverses on even slight resistance, the close force is too low.
- Adjust close force. Per opener manual - usually a screw or programming sequence:
- Mechanical openers: small adjustment screw labeled "DOWN FORCE" on the motor head
- Electronic openers: a button-sequence in programming mode
- Re-test the close cycle. Door should now close fully without reversing.
- Run the safety-reverse test (2x4 on floor) AFTER any close-force adjustment. Door MUST still reverse on the 2x4. If it doesn't, you've turned it up too far.
Resolution
- Close force too low: increase 1/4 turn (mechanical) or 1 step (electronic). Re-test. Re-run safety reverse.
- Door binds mechanically: identify the binding point; usually a roller, hinge, or track. Lubricate, adjust, or replace the failing component.
- Misadjusted down-limit: re-set per opener instructions.
- Spring out of balance: needs torsion spring adjustment OR replacement.
- Hinges loose: tighten OR replace bent hinges.
- Track misalignment: realign per manufacturer specs.
- Trolley dragging: lubricate or replace.
The safety reverse system is required by UL 325 + federal law. Don't increase the close force to "make it close" without verifying the safety reverse STILL works on a 2x4. A car or a child under that closing door is a fatality waiting to happen. Increase force in small increments AND re-test safety reverse after EACH increment.
Prevention
- Annual service catches roller wear + hinge issues before they cause close-force complaints
- Customer education on what NOT to lubricate (chain only; not the rail itself - attracts dirt)
