Condensation vs Coolant vs Fuel Puddle Under Unit: Color and Smell Decision Tree

Why this matters

A puddle under a standby generator gets a panicked call, and the customer almost always assumes the worst. But a wet spot under the unit is one of four things: harmless condensation from the exhaust or from an air-conditioned enclosure, escaping engine coolant, a fuel leak, or oil. Each has a distinct color, smell, and feel, and each carries a wildly different urgency. Condensation needs nothing. Coolant loss can cook the engine. A fuel leak is a fire hazard that takes the unit out of service immediately. Reading the puddle correctly in the first two minutes decides whether you reassure the customer or shut the unit down on the spot. This tree uses color, smell, feel, and location to name the fluid.

Symptom presentation

  • Clear, thin, odorless water: condensation. Often appears after a run cycle in humid weather or in cold mornings, frequently near the exhaust outlet or the bottom of an enclosure.
  • Green, orange, pink, or yellow fluid, slick, sweet smell: engine coolant (glycol). The sweet smell is the definitive tell.
  • Clear-to-amber thin fluid with a strong fuel smell (diesel or gasoline): a fuel leak. Diesel is oily and amber; gasoline is thin and volatile.
  • LP/natural gas: no liquid puddle (it is a vapor) but a gas odor near the unit is its own emergency, handled separately.
  • Dark brown to black, slick, oily, no sweet smell: engine oil.

Note where under the unit the puddle sits. Coolant tends to come from the front (radiator/water pump) area; fuel from the fuel line/filter/tank area; oil from the pan/filter; condensation from the exhaust or enclosure low point.

Quick checks

  • Look at the color against a clean rag or paper towel: clear, dyed (green/orange/pink), or dark/oily.
  • Smell it from a safe distance: odorless (water), sweet (coolant), sharp fuel odor (fuel), or oily (oil).
  • Feel a drop between gloved fingers: water is thin and non-slick; coolant is slick and slightly sticky; fuel is thin and evaporates with a fuel smell; oil is slick and persistent.
  • Check the unit's fluid levels: coolant recovery bottle, fuel level, oil dipstick. A drop in a reservoir confirms the source.
  • Note recent weather and run history. A clear puddle the morning after a humid exercise run is almost certainly condensation.

Isolation tree

Branch 1: Clear, thin, odorless, non-slick.

This is water.

  • Exhaust condensation: combustion produces water vapor; on a short run or in cold/humid conditions it condenses and drips from the exhaust outlet or muffler drain. Normal. Confirm the drip traces to the exhaust path.
  • Enclosure condensation: an enclosed or cooled set can sweat. Normal.
  • Confirm coolant and fuel levels are stable. If they are, reassure the customer; no repair needed.
  • If the "water" is actually thin coolant, the smell test catches it; pure water has no sweet smell.

Branch 2: Dyed (green/orange/pink/yellow), slick, sweet smell.

This is coolant. Treat as service-affecting.

  • Confirm the coolant recovery bottle or radiator level has dropped. A confirmed loss means an external leak somewhere in the cooling system.
  • Trace the leak with the engine cold and the system pressurized: inspect the radiator, hoses and clamps, water pump weep hole, heater/block-heater fittings, and freeze plugs. A weeping water pump or a cracked hose is the common find.
  • If coolant is dropping with NO external leak visible, suspect internal loss (head gasket, cracked head) and confirm with a combustion-gas test of the coolant. That cross-references the white-smoke diagnosis.
  • Do not let the unit run low on coolant; overheating follows fast.

Branch 3: Thin/amber with strong fuel smell.

This is a fuel leak. Take the unit out of service.

  • Confirm the fuel odor and trace to the fuel system: tank, supply and return lines, fuel filter housing, lift pump, and injector lines (diesel) or the fuel line and carburetor/regulator (gaseous-liquid LP draw).
  • A diesel leak leaves an oily amber stain with a strong odor; a gasoline leak is thinner and far more volatile.
  • Any active fuel leak is a fire hazard. Shut the unit down, isolate the fuel supply, and do not return to service until the leak is repaired and verified dry under pressure.

Branch 4: Dark, oily, slick, no sweet smell.

This is engine oil.

  • Check the dipstick for a level drop. Trace to the oil pan drain plug, oil filter seal, valve cover gasket, or a front/rear main seal.
  • An overfilled crankcase can also push oil out the breather; verify level before chasing seals.
  • Oil loss is service-affecting but not the immediate fire hazard a fuel leak is; still correct it before the next extended run.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Condensation: clear, odorless, levels stable, source traces to exhaust or enclosure low point. Confirmed harmless.
  • Coolant: dyed and sweet, recovery bottle dropping, external leak located or combustion-gas test positive. Confirmed.
  • Fuel: fuel odor, source in the fuel system, stain traces to a line/filter/tank. Confirmed; out of service.
  • Oil: dark and oily, dipstick dropping, source at a seal or filter. Confirmed.

Remediation

  • Condensation: no action beyond confirming exhaust/enclosure drainage is clear.
  • Coolant: repair the external leak (hose, clamp, pump, fitting), refill and bleed the system, and pressure-verify; investigate internal loss if no external source.
  • Fuel: repair or replace the leaking component, leak-test under operating pressure, and only then return the unit to service.
  • Oil: replace the failed seal or gasket, correct any overfill, refill to the mark, and recheck for leaks after a run cycle.

A fuel puddle is a fire and explosion hazard. Shut the unit down, kill the fuel supply, eliminate ignition sources, and ventilate before working. A gas (LP/NG) odor with no liquid puddle is a leak emergency: do not operate any switch, evacuate, and shut off the gas supply from a safe point.
