Diagnose Generator No-Start
Goal
Systematically diagnose why a standby generator won't start. Critical when customer just lost power + generator silent. Diagnosis under pressure; methodical approach essential.
Prerequisites
- Multimeter
- Tools (basic set)
- Service manual for specific generator model
- 30-60 minutes (most diagnostics)
- Power source (some tests require auxiliary)
Initial steps
Step 1: Verify the problem
- Confirm: utility is off, generator should be running, but isn't
- Note error codes (modern units display)
- Check controller display for status
Step 2: Listen + observe (2 min)
Click? Crank? Silence?
- Silence: no power to starter or control system
- Click: starter relay engaging but starter not turning
- Cranking, no firing: fuel or spark issue
- Cranks slow: battery weakness
- Fires, dies: fuel starvation or speed issue
Diagnostic tree
Symptom 1: Complete silence - no display, no click
Cause: No power to controller
Check:
- Battery voltage with multimeter
- 12.0V+ resting = adequate
- < 12.0V = weak battery
- 0V = disconnected or dead
- Battery cables: secure, clean, no corrosion
- Inline fuses (some generators have fusing on battery circuit)
- Charger output (when utility is on): 13.6-14.0V
Fix: charge or replace battery; tighten cables; replace fuses.
Symptom 2: Display works, but no crank
Cause 1: Auto-start disabled
- Check controller mode (AUTO vs OFF vs MANUAL)
- Should be AUTO for auto-start to work
Fix: turn dial / select AUTO
Cause 2: Low battery (insufficient to crank)
- Display works on low battery; starter needs much more current
- Voltage drops sharply during crank attempt
Fix: charge or replace battery
Cause 3: Controller fault
- Display shows error code
- Common: "low oil", "high temp", "service required", "battery weak"
Fix: address specific error per error code manual
Cause 4: Failed safety interlock
- Most generators have multiple safety interlocks
- "Low oil pressure" sensor triggered (if pressure dropped during last shutdown)
- "High coolant temp" triggered (if overheated previously)
- "Low oil level" sensor triggered
Fix: reset after addressing root cause; check oil/coolant levels first
Symptom 3: Cranks but won't fire
Cause 1: No fuel
For natural gas:
- Gas valve closed?
- Pressure regulator failed (low pressure)?
- Gas leak somewhere upstream
For propane:
- Tank empty?
- Tank valve closed?
- Tank too cold (vapor pressure drops in extreme cold)
For gas (portable):
- Tank empty
- Fuel valve closed
- Old fuel (gummed up carburetor)
Fix: restore fuel supply; replace stale fuel; check pressure regulator
Cause 2: No spark (gas/propane generators)
- Spark plug fouled or wrong gap
- Spark plug wire damaged
- Ignition coil failed
- Crank sensor failed
Fix: replace spark plug, test spark with timing light, replace coil if dead
Cause 3: Compression issue
- Worn rings, valves, or head gasket
- Compression test reveals
- Less common; more major issue
Fix: professional engine repair
Cause 4: Air intake blocked
- Foreign object (rodent nest, etc.)
- Air filter completely clogged
Fix: clear obstruction, replace filter
Symptom 4: Fires + runs, dies after seconds
Cause 1: Fuel starvation (intermittent)
- Fuel pressure regulator marginal
- Fuel line restriction
- Carburetor jet clogged (portables)
Fix: pressure test fuel system; clean/rebuild carburetor
Cause 2: Speed / governor issue
- Engine speed should be 3600 RPM (60 Hz)
- If too low or unstable: governor problem
Fix: adjust governor; replace if stuck
Cause 3: Sensor / safety trip
- Low oil pressure (real oil pressure problem)
- High temperature (real overheat)
- Overcrank limit (controller stops after N attempted starts)
Fix: address root cause
Symptom 5: Cranks slowly + won't fire
Cause: weak battery + cold weather + engine resistance
Fix:
- Charge or replace battery
- If old: clean terminals; check ground
- Cold weather: battery may be undersized for climate
Symptom 6: Battery fine, no auto-start during real outage
Cause: ATS not signaling generator
- ATS not sensing utility loss
- Control wire between ATS + generator broken
- ATS relay failed
Fix:
- Manual start at generator (verify generator runs)
- Inspect control wires
- Test ATS function
Test sequence for "won't start" call
- Visual inspection - gross damage, obvious issues
- Battery voltage - measure with multimeter
- Try manual start - bypass auto-start, see if generator runs at all
- Check display + error codes - controller diagnostics
- Test fuel pressure - confirm fuel reaching unit
- Check spark (gas/propane) - visible spark at plug
- Test ATS function - signaling correctly?
- Compression test - if engine cranks but won't fire
Document each step + result.
Common error codes (Generac as example)
- E1000: Battery low
- E1300: Overcrank
- E1500: Low oil pressure
- E1700: Overspeed
- E1100: Maintenance required (interval-based)
- E1900: ATS communication fault
Each manufacturer has unique error code map; reference manual essential.
What to do during real outage (customer waiting)
- Diagnose quickly + transparently
- If fixable in 1-2 hours: do it
- If parts needed: provide bridge solution (portable generator rental, point to neighbor's generator power)
- Schedule full repair for after the outage if non-critical
Preventive maintenance
Most "no-start" calls are preventable with annual service:
- Battery replacement at 2-3 years
- Annual oil + filter service
- Annual load test
- Annual fuel system inspection
Customers on annual service contracts have 80-90% fewer "won't start" calls than non-contract customers.
The #1 cause of generator no-starts: DEAD OR DYING BATTERY. Battery life is shorter on generators than cars (battery sits unused for weeks between exercises). Many generators sit on a trickle charger that's enough to maintain BUT NOT enough to fully recharge if the generator runs hard. Replace battery proactively at 2 years; check voltage at every annual service.
